I have just had a call from a person who has taken in a young female puss which had nine kittens? Is that unusual? They have supplemented feeding them but all are doing okay.. Amazing number
-
Probably not that common, but remember Flora? ;D

I`ve heard of a few over the years. Last year Denise did a brilliant job with her foster that had 9 babies, think the cat may have been called Flora,it will be in the archives somewhere.

I found this interesting article http://www.messybeast.com/prolificacy.htm
This bit is upsetting though
"In the early days of pedigree cat breeding, most pedigree females were allowed to raise only 2 kittens at a time; additional kittens were fostered by a non-pedigree queen whose own litter would be destroyed." :'(

it does happen, you just have to make sure they weigh them all daily as they only have 8 nipples, so they sometimes need rotating and maybe topping up. I think Ela has posted about mums with more kittens than that.

I remember Flora - just checked and she did have 9 :Luv2:

The lady we are getting our new kitten from said some of her queens have 7 or 8 in a litter and one of them did produce nine.
-
hope she leaves a good space between litters then Puddy, that is a lot of kittens to be having on a regular basis...
-
Yes she does BC. She has 7 queens and they have a litter alternate years.
-
what breed are they?
-
They are Tonkinese and they are absolutely beautiful. They live in complete luxury - made me quite envious
-
I was at a tonk show a month or so ago, they are lovely!

Glad he found a space, and nice that he let you know.

I think Sharon found him the space at Rhodes Minnis sanctuary - it was on another thread. They had an open day on Sunday and did well on Rehoming so were able to help. It is a great sanctuary. As well as having a large feral enclosure, they are in the process of building an FIV unit which we saw. Judging by the size f it, it will be a great help with FIV kitties.
