Title: HELP please advice needed
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on July 16, 2008, 20:22:13 PM
This is only cat related as one of my cats caught it!.......sigh

I have a liitle critter in a box and think its a baby. Its nice and warm still at moment and sleeping but have had him since about lunchtime and he has had no food.

I have put grass in the box and some water but what do little critters eat?

I dont know what sort of baby critter he is but something like a mouse, and has a very short tail.

I am having to keep the box in the shed to keep safe from my hunters and Misa already has tried to find where the smell was coming from.

The little critter seems to be out of shock now and breathing normally and has moved from one place to an otherin the box, seems to be sleeping peacefully but must be hungry but cant set free cos he will not survive out there cos think he is too young.

What can I give him to eat, is water the right thing for him to drink?

Could he be a vole?

Yes it could be field vole cos it has very short tail although it looks not so brushy type of fur as in the picture. Its ears are quite laid back to its head.

He has moved a piece of grass to where he is curled up, so maybe thats the right food. His nose is quite blunt and thought he resembled a mini hippo earlier but not any more cos can see his little nose.

I hope he will be warm enough in the box over night cos the shed does cool off .

Have tissues and kitchen towel in the box plus grass, the box is a Felix pouch box so quite small and thick cardboard.

It gets scared easy so am trying not too disturb it too much.

Try him with a bit apple.  Also have a look at this thread  it might be a shrew  http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,6863.0.html

and another thread on the same little critter http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,6987.0.html

Gill, try to put a kitchen or toilet roll so he can go inside and sleep, and may be some lettuce, apple, cheese or nuts .

Water is always the right water, if you see what I mean.  Do you have filtered water for him?  If not, use tap...

Thanks Pav and Sam  ;D

He maybe a vole but just dont know and note that Lynn says that they had a bigger head than a mouse and he does so guess its a toss up between a Field vole and something else, he still doent seem to have the right kind of coat after looking at all the pictures but maybe its cos he is so young.

Will try putting some milk apple and cheese in the box with him and if he is still here tomorrow try a toilet roll too.

So hard but he stands no chance at all out side cos he is just a baby.

I would wait till the cats are in then let it out, over the next garden perhaps. I think we think of them as babies as they do seem very small but most of the time they are adults. It should soon find its home  :)

Aw, well done Gill, hope you manage to help the little one pull through and hopefully your puddies won't catch it again.

My neighbour's cat used to bring her all sorts of little creatures and she would have to pretend how good Lucky was and then go and pamper them and let them back in the fields behind where we live.

Good luck chuck.

Just caught up with this thread - I was reading a rescue site the other day and it said never to give any wildlife cows milk as it is indigestible. Mealworms would probably be the best for protein but doubt if they sell them in your local shop  :-:

Very sorry to tell you that the little critter passed to the Bridge today  :(

I think he was definately a baby cos he was very small and I sadly just didnt have enough knowledge how to look after a little thing this young and fragile, but I tried.  Very sad cos he fought back so hard and I was hoping he may make it to scampering stage and then I would have set him free in the field

Aww poor wee thing, I have had a few die of shock  :(

And also one thet recovered, more than I had anticipated and it jumped out of the box at me, argh lol.

When I had the baby starling I bought mealworms from a reptile shop. Although the poor thing had past away by the time I got home so the outside birds had a good supper.

I hate Harrys hunting ways  :(
