Got an urgent call to trap Feral mum and 3 babies in a toilet factory today, thankfully had husband to help carry trap etc as the place was huge and I struggled to walk so far in the dusty atmosphere. The babies have been handled by the workmen and were asleep so no problem in getting them in basket and luckily mum was in the trap fairly quickly despite needing the use of a fork lift truck. The cats and us were all covered in clay and plaster powder which tasted awful .
We had quite a laugh about it being a Bog standard rescue and came up with 3 appropriate names for the kittens Lou, Lulu and Tinkle and all in all a pleasant and successful afternoon until I noticed poor Tinkles eyes.
We dashed to the vets and Rebecca says Tinkle has Bilateral Glaucoma, her eyes are bulging and she is blind. It is most likely both eyes will be removed but Rebecca is going to do some research tonight before deciding what course of action to take and may decide an eye specialist is best,we will know when we take Tinkle back at 10.30 in the morning.
The babies are just 6 weeks old and we have left mum with the vet for spay.
-
Sending positive vibes for these gorgeous babes and mum cat....they are in the best place now...and good on the workmen taking time to part socialise these young uns! :Luv: :Luv:
Best of luck to Tinkle! :wish:
-
Best wishes for little Tinkle :Luv:
Great names too ;D
-
My thoughts are with poor little Tinkle. I shall hope for another Paws Inn miracle but at least she will be cared for now.
-
Oh, poor little mite! :'( :'(
I am so glad she's with you now, Teresa. Imagine her chances if she'd stayed in that place long. :scared:  Perhaps it might be an idea to inform the people at the place she came from? There may be something in the atmosphere that could harm people's eyes as well? :-:
-
Poor little Tinkle, send lots of good vibes
-
After receiving some bad news today, reading this has just flipped on the floodgates. Poor baby Tinkle. Wishing all the best for the visit to the vet tomorrow.
I hope that all the babies thrive as they should.
A big cuddle to them all T. x

Huge hugs and prayers for Tinkle tomorrow.

Poor Tinkle :'( Will mum be going back with her babies when she's been spayed?
-
Poor baby :'(
Lets hope Rebecca can do something for her
-
Aww, the poor baby, fingers crossed for her.
-
Paws and fingers crossed for Tinkle.
Such a sweet looking kitty. :Luv2:
-
Poor Tinkle :'( Will mum be going back with her babies when she's been spayed?
No,as mum will be returned to the factory when she has fully recovered from her spay.Whilst the factory is full of this awful clay/plaster dust Mum has total access to outdoors which is a perfect setting besides 2 canals and in open countryside and workmen who will feed her.
Not poor Tinkle, sad as it is she is lucky as she will now get the treatment she richly deserves, she was dehydrated when we picked her up,a sign that she was not coping, she has eaten well infact better than Lou and Lulu. I noticed a slight red line in Lulus right eye this morning so will be getting that checked out too.
Must admit I will be happier when Rebecca tells me the course of action.
-
Keeping fingers and toes crossed xxx

Prayers and positive thoughts going to Tinkle's eyes ................................................................................... to help reduce swelling - pain and give her some sight.
Poor baby :'( - Thank heaven they are now safe - give them all a snuggle from me here
-
Hope something can be done for Tinkles eyes. They're all so sweet.
-
Cant mum be put for homing? - why does she have to go back :(
Thinking about poor Tinkles poorly sore eyes - I so hope she is lucky like Diablo and some site returns xxxxxxx.
forgot to say -they are all beautiful babes.
-
Rebecca is still waiting for the specialist to contact her, however the condition is not congenital,it has most likely been caused by the swelling due to the dust. There is a tiny bit of hope, Rebecca can see some eye structure within 1 eye that she couldn`t see yesterday, so there is a slight chance we may be able to save it, the other eye is useless. Got drops and cream for now but the drops we really need may be dangerous as they are diuretic so Rebecca is going to ring me after she has spoken to specialist. Vet appointment again tomorrow but at least we have a small ray of hope.
Tinkle has decided that she is going to be a glamour model and began her career with a photo session by the vet :Luv:
Mum cat is feral , and basic rules where there is a safe feeding ground is Trap- Neuter-Return.
-
My lovely vet Paul specialises in eyes.
I so hope she gets some site. Shame about Mum - Though ast least she wont have to feed more than her own tum. xxxx
-
Sending my positive vibes to Twinkle and to you
Hoping for some sight in Twinkle's eye.
-
It's funny how different vets work, mine won't spay when the mum is lactating and always maintain kittens are better with her until they are at least 8 weeks which I agree with. It seems a shame just to catch her, take her kittens and get her done and release her, she will end up wondering what's happened to her babies if she's been looking after them :'( Isn't there any chance she can remain with her babes for another couple of weeks?

That would be nice if she could - poor girl will wonder what the hell is going on bless - do you think she could become tame and settle in a home?
-
Maybe I'm too soft but I would also be worrying about all the dust, I know ferals are hard to relocate, god knows I have a houseful of them looking for homes, but they love their comforts like any other cat and one day, I'm sure mine will land on their feet and the perfect home will come up. Apart from the above, I'm just not comfortable with the idea of splitting her from her babies when they are so young :'(
-
I think it depends on the cat and which is the lesser of 2 evils, Dawn. I recall last year trying desparately to rehabilitate a tortie female about 5 months old, and as she was so quiet initially I thought I might be in with a chance. She was so beautiful and we could have rehomed her 3 times over! :Luv: But she just cowered at the back of the pen day after day and looked so, so depressed. I couldn't get anywhere near her. :( After a week I realised I wasn't doing her any favours and because she came from a safe area with a very dedicated feeder, she would be better off going back. So I had her spayed and a couple of days later, took her back and released her. I swear I could see her break into a smile when she saw she was home and free, and her little tail lifted and she pranced off into the woods like a princess and never looked back at me. :evillaugh:
Sometimes I still think about the week of fear and uncertainty I inflicted on her which she needn't of had. :tired: Some you just cannot win and feral mums and kittens are always a tradegy and Teresa knows the area and can spot one that's best off in the wild. Well, just my thoughts... :shy:

Yep, that's true but this one hasn't been in that position and the one you're referring to didn't have babies :tired: This one has been caught and taken to the vets, I've dealt enough with ferals to know the ins and outs of the psychological trauma involved but I also know mum's and kittens should be together for minimum 8 weeks if this is at all possible.
-
Maybe the mum doesnt have any milk left so spaying isnt an issue, im sure teresa wouldnt have sent her if there was any question on her safety.
She could also be of those types who wouldnt cope with being caged for a few weeks, the type you say you spay and release instead of keeping whilst they rear another litter.
Best wishes for Tinkle, i hope she can regain some sight in the one eye :wish:
-
Mum and babies were only caught yesterday so there is no way of knowing without trying, and even if the kittens weren't suckling, whatever literature you read, the advice given is mum and babies should be kept together for 8 weeks. When they are separated too young, this is when behavioural problems can start, I have never ever split mum and babies up unless kittens are at risk from mum :shy: Maybe there are other issues that weren't posted so I may have got it wrong :tired:
-
Fingers crossed for the specialist, and i hope one eye can be saved. I am sure you are doing the best for mum, you know her and the area.
-
O dear its seems that some of you are more interested in the ethics of myself and my vet . Such a pity I didnt see this post earlier in the day I could have saved some supposition: but I`m afraid my time is wisely spent providing a high standard of care to my current feline guests, which means forum time is limited.
I normally keep my queens both feral and domestic with their kittens until they are 9 weeks of age for anyone in doubt check over all the old forum threads, they provide dates full stories and usually a little update at rehoming time; I offer a very high standard of care to my rescues and ALWAYS put their needs before my own. My vets are second to none.
After an emergency consultation with my vet yesterday is was decided to spay mother cat immediately and not to return her to the kittens, this decision was based on what both vet and myself judged to be best for both mum and babies given their current state of health.
Hopefully this thread can now get back on track : it is about Tinkle and her condition which you never know may just prove to provide useful information to someone one day.
-
I so hope that Tinkle does have sight in at least one eye. And best wishes for her little sisters too.
As to Teresas thoughts on what is best for the mother cat, I believe we all had a discussion a couple of weeks ago during which one rescue member disagreed with another rescue member about what was best for a particular cat. It was felt then that the rescue member at the point of need was best-placed to make the decision and I think we need to apply the same rationale here, please.
Teresa has cross-posted with me, but I wish my post to stand too.
-
Sorry to disappoint but this is a little different to the other thread we were "discussing". And this isn't to do with disagreeing with a member, it just got me wondering as to why this mum is being parted from her babies when it's going against everything we as rescues advise when parting mum and kittens. I wouldn't want other "members" looking at this thread and thinking well T has taken the babies away so this must be okay, that's why I wanted to ask why so thank you for answering :innocent:
Modified to add: We have to remember, other people come on the forum and read these threads, if we drum it into them about taking kittens away younger than 8 weeks, what hope have we got if a rescue has done this with no explanation as to why, I personally would feel like a hyprocrite if I didn't ask the question that I'm sure is on other peoples lips.
-
but I`m afraid my time is wisely spent providing a high standard of care to my current feline guests, which means forum time is limited.
As is everyone else's who does rescue ;D
-
Sorry to disappoint
Yes, perhaps I would describe myself as disappointed :(. I have accepted that a highly-experienced rescue member at the point of need is best-placed to make decisions and I can only repeat, I think we need to apply that same rationale here, please.
-
No worries, I only wanted to know why and that's sort of been answered, I guess I'm just one of those people that like to ask questions and say whats on my mind rather than ignoring/agreeing for the sake of it :shy:
-
I think that we all need to agree that EVERYBODY who posts on this board has the best interests of their puds at heart..................so people might not always agree on methods and desicions taken but all have the same agenda and that is what is important.
-
Back onto the original theme for this topic I am sending all my prayers for Tinkle
-
Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers for little Tinkle T and hoping she gets at least some sight back. She's in the best possible hands now. Lots of gentle hugs for all three babes :Luv2:
-
How is this little darling today? - I hope these soothing vibes are helping her little eyes - more love and vibes coming their way - and some to mum too cant forget her - after all she bought them in to the world.
and a  to you T for doing a fab job - keep it up - where would they be without you xx
-
Hope little Tinkle is doing better today!
-
Tinkle is as bright as the little star she is; she has gained 100grams in weight in less than 48hours and is finding her way to food and litter tray and giving Lou and Lulu a perfect right hook.
There has been bad news today, although the specialist has not seen Tinkle he has had a long discussion with Rebecca. All text books say this is not congenital, the specialist has said it is and starts around 4weeks of age upward,so I have been put on high alert to watch Lou and Lulu also as there is no way of knowing whether this is congenital or down to the dust. The specialist advises that it is usually moggie kittens who get it this young and they are PTS or left to die. Anyway we are hoping that this is a result of the dust.
Tinkle is now on 2 different sets of drops and cream inbetween which basically means she is having something in her eyes every couple of hours, the latest drops are dangerous. Specialist feels we may manage to save one eye but it will always be a problem and she will have frequent attacks, enucliation being the end result.
Tinkle is on vets advise not to be rehomed but we do have some really bright ideas for her future but cant say much at present. So bleak though the news may be Tinkle is happy and oblivious to all the commotion she is causing.
I wish everyone could physically have the joy of giving her a cuddle and feeling the love she has to give, you know you dont even notice she looks a bit different.
-
Am really pleased to hear that Tinkle has put on much needed weight.
Will be keeping her and Lulu and Lou in my thoughts. I hope that the end prognosis is better than that give to date.
A huge cuddle for all of them and a special snuzzle for Tinkle.
-
Poor little Tinkle. :( I do hope it's different to human glucoma. :wish: In humans, they can do lots to delay the progress but there is no cure. My uncle had it. :'(
Extra cuddles from us, please! :blow kiss:
-
:blow kiss: And cuddles from me to Tinkle too. :cuddle:
Actually, cuddles to them all!
-
Fingers crossed for them all T, and I hope the other two will stay fine.
-
This little trio are having great fun, and I am sure all these different eye drops/cream is having an effect, it may of course be wishful thinking but I think the swelling has gone down quite a bit.
Tinkle like her siblings is eating well and playing, she finds her way around easily and is top cat.
We wanted to take picture of Lou and Lulu but as you can see they were otherwise engaged
Next vet appointment Monday.
-
Lovely pics T, and i hope Rebecca is pleased with Tinkle on Mon.
-
I think your poo obsession is taking you over, Teresa
On a serious note, it looks from the pictures that the swellings in Tinkles eyes have subsided quite dramatically. I do hope so
-
Maybe we need to set up a new therapy group..........................I can see it now!
"My name is Teresa and I am a poopaholic..." :evillaugh:
-
Now looky here If what comes out looks good its a fair guess that all is well inside.
I am a poopaholic
-
The indignity of being photographed whilst pooping :o :o
Theres many a blind/eyeless cat so im sure she will lead a lovely happy life :Luv:

-
All well and playing this morning, one of Tinkles eyes seems to have a slight line going across so I am watching it like a hawk, despite this I still think there is an improvement.
-

-

-
Hello Tinkle. I like to "nom nom nom" gorgeous little puds, so just popping by to do exactly that! :Luv2:
-
Kirst, what worming routine do you have them on? They often get roundworm from their mumma
Theyr were wormed by Sharon just before I got them - they have been here just over 4 weeks now and have not yet been outside so they havent been wormed again yet. Can someone clarify - do they need worming again yet as they havent been out? :)
-
Hi Kirsty. .Yes i think it would be a good idea to worm again..Of course when they go out and hunt will need doing regularly.
-
Rebecca is pleased with Tinkles progress and says that the swelling has definately reduced and that she can see eye structure more clearly in the one eye; next appointment Thursday.
-
Thats great news Teresa, sounds like littel Tinkle is a proper little fighter xxx
-
Wonderful news, and fingers crossed for Thurs.

Rebecca still pleased with Tinkles progress, says she can now see a pupil and iris in the good eye, the swelling has reduced from what it was originally. She now has some artifical tears to put in her eyes as well as the 2 different eye drops and eye cream. Next appointment in a week unless we are worried. Minimopsical had her booster today and quite enjoyed the outing with the kittens who are now in her charge :)

Fabulous news :) :Luv: ;D
-
Managed to get a couple of pics of Tinkle showing the change to her eyes.
Lou as always was camera shy.
-
Poor baby. Can she close he eyes properly? - It looks so uncomfortable for her :'(
-
She's such a courageous little kitty. Beautiful. As is Lou, albeit he's camera shy ;D
-
Poor baby. Can she close he eyes properly? - It looks so uncomfortable for her :'(
She is not in any pain, the artificial tears are to make sure that the eyes open and close easily. Her eyes were a heck of a lot bigger when she first arrived ,she is thriving like a normal kitten. We are literaly putting something in her eyes every hour between 5am and 11pm which she is used to .
Every time I get the camera out Lou seems to go for a poop
-
Poop poop poop..... I see signs of a fetish here, Aunty T. Now, look at the ink blots. What do you see......?
Her eyes were a lot bigger, bless her. She's looking a lot more "normal" now. What a little sweetheart.
-
Shes is beautiful....................... :Luv2:
-
We have just out an out of hours vet appointment for Tinkle, after she went quiet and refused her food;she has been on and off litter tray without passing anything much since lunchtime. Andy has now stopped the diuretic eye drops as he thinks its possible they have caused a build up which is damaging her kidneys;he said he is unable to put her on a drip because of her eyes ;fortunately she is not dehydrated at the minute but we are going to have a fight ahead to syringe enough feed into her, she positively freaks out when you try to syringe feed her probably because she cant see. Seem to spend my days fighting one thing for something else to crop up. Please keep everything crossed for her.
-
Will say a little prayer for her and keeop everything crossed for you both.xx
-
Best wishes for Tinkle & yourself
-
Prayers being said for little Tinkle and keeping all fingers and paws crossed here. You are certainly going through it T, my thoughts are with you

Managed to keep Tinkles fluids topped up throughout the night but she is no better; may have a word with Andy later but he said yesterday that he is restricted on giving the medication he wants because of her eyes and kidneys. Hopefully she will pick up soon.
