Title: Is there any way to stop cats climbing plants?
Post by: Bryony84 on June 27, 2008, 22:32:42 PM
Probably a silly question as I expect the answer is no, but can I stop amber and chilli climbing the plant/tree thing I bought from ikea before I got them. Its about 3 foot tall, mostly trunk with foliage at the top, they enjoy pushing it over and its currently at a very drunken angle! Short of cementing it into the pot, is there anything I can do?

Oh dear, silly cats! I don't know how you would prevent that... I'm currently trying to prevent Jameson from chewing my aloe vera plant, I'm not successful.

Definitely plant re-homing time.  I had lots of plants before I had cats, now I have lots of cats and no plants (much better arrangement)

No plants. I can't imagine the thought of having to clean wet soil off cream carpets on a regular basis because that is frankly what would happen  :tired:

plants have three purposes in a cat's life. You eat them, you climb them, or you use the soil in the base as a spare litter tray. You can either have cats or plants. Having both is rarely a success ...

Oh dear. I think I have one of these plants you described. Did it have ivy growing in the bottom?  If so I think it might be going on a 'holiday'

I've got plants in my house, they all live in spots where the cats can't get! I remember when I had Koscha and Mischief as kittens, my mothers rubber plant was their climbing post of choice, but muggins got the job of removing compost from the carpets!
Needless to say it didn't last long....If you've got a cat free room or you can get it up high out of their reach do so..otherwise it's definaltey plant rehoming time....perhaps the RSPCA can help  :innocent: :naughty:

My plants have definitely dwindled. Spider plants get eaten (chills out cats) and oher plants get dragged over by any young cats  I care for and end up being given away or homed in my mini greenhouse - which is usually too hot and they collapse!

I did consider putting the plant outside to see how it did, I think it might have to move to the upstairs bathroom if theres space, I keep the bathroom doors shut mostly as the cats enjoy the lovely sport of toilet diving too much!
