Title: Odd kitten behaviour?

My kittens are around three and a half months old, they are brother and sister and for the last 6 days the male has been sniffing the females bum.

At first she was running away from him but now she gives up and just lets him do it. A few times he has put his front paws over her as if trying to mount.

Could someone tell me if this is normal behaviour as I thought the were still too young for mating/heat/spay/neuter.

Hi Sarah,

I am sure there are more experts than me around but I do know that it is not odd behaviour it is an instinctive reaction, same with humans.  All animals wil experience instinctive sexual behaviour.  Some babies aged around 12 - 18 months will get onto all fours and look as though they are shagging the floor, my next door neighbours did and whilst she got upset about it, it was short lived and did not last long.

Whatever your pussies are going through I am sure that it is natural and not odd and in any case I presume that you will be getting them neutred in the future and so this behaviour will probably stop.

Hahaha I was just shocked because they're still so young.

Yes we will get them neutered in the future anyways. Thanks alot for your advice  :)

I think that's why so many people end up with pregnant cats .... they didn't think their "babies" were old enough to do "that sort of thing!"  Although as Yvonne says it's perfectly natural and at 3½ months old nothing to worry about I would keep an eye on them when they are a bit older and definatley get them done as oon as possible ... your vet will be able to advice when they are ready ... your boy might be a fast developer and may be able to be done before he is 6 months old.

BTW ... have we seen pics your new furries yet?

P.S - Does anyone have any idea what breeds they might have come from, the previous owner didn't know either..

Breed ... I would say they are 100% DSH (Domestic Short Hair = Moggy) of course that doesn't make them any less beautiful or wonderful.

Aww, they are lovely. I would ring your vets and find out what is the youngest they will do them - most vets will do brother/sister combinations that bit sooner just in case they do learn what to do - and females can get pregnant as young as 4 months. If you can't afford to get them both done at the same time, I would get the female done first - males can still produce sperm afterwards, so could still get cats pregnant.
