Title: I start volunteering tomorrow!
Post by: tigerbaby on June 26, 2008, 15:09:28 PM
I am really excited! As you are aware I made a trip to the local rescue home a while ago (!) , and met the lovely lady running the place. I offered her a hand and she was very grateful - we've arranged for me to start at 9.30am tomorrow morning.

I REALLY look forward to this, ages ago I volunteered at Mayhew Animal Home (Willesden Green), and although I loved it there it seemed like us volunteers always were in the way of the staff - Mayhew is quite big. This place (Croydon Animal Samaritans) is quite a small place, combined Cattery and Cats Home, with chickens and dogs running around - it's very cosy, just my cup of tea - I can't WAIT to get down and dirty in my wellies, scooping poop!!

Those little bottles of handwash (the ones that require no water) come in very handy  :wow:

Good luck with your first day, you'll love it

Thanks guys! I'm going to bring my mini wipes and the anti bacterial cleaning foam - is that what you mean Den? And I'm going to try not to get emotionally attached to every cat....

Make sure you turn up!  :evillaugh: - I'm sure you will love it

I lived around there for a while in the early 90's in Chaplin Road - It was nearer Dollis Hill than WG but I always got a zone 2 pass and walked  :evillaugh: (great chippy by the station) Happy memories - I loved living in the area although it was a grotty flat.

Yes that's what I meant  :wow:

I don't know whether it's just me (don't think it is) but you might find you don't get attached to all of them as you'd think. You'll find the ones you like, the ones you could do without  :evillaugh: and on the odd occasion the ones you want to take home and keep forever and ever and ever  :Luv:. In 5 years of dealing with animals I fell head over heels in love with 3 dogs and got obsessively and emotionally attached to one cat (Memphis).

Oh I will turn up! I'm looking forward to it - by the way, I'm not going to WG, I'm going to the one round the corner from my house, in sunny Croydon!

Enjoy - they'll probably have plenty of stuff to wash you hands with so don't worry, where I go I have to scrub up before going to each cat by the end of it my hands look like prunes - handcream in the car is a must!  Funnily enough I've only fallen for two cats in the time I've been doing it and really wanted to take them home, both of them didn't like other cats though so I couldn't!

That's where I got my boys, Riley and Digby, from. It is a really nice place and the lady was great. She put up with me keep going and visiting until they were ready to come home with me. It's reminded me to email her with an update and some pics for their website.

Hope you have had a good day.

It went really well today, I did enjoy scooping poop and cleaning bowls! Although the lady that showed me around (another volunteer) told me if I spent less time chatting to the cats we'd get done much quicker! It's a small place with maybe 25+ cats plus the cats in the cattery, and around 7 ferals. Things were pretty straight forward, mainly cleaning out each kennel, changing the food and scooping poop. There were some gorgeous kittys there, some very shy (a pair, who were found in a cramped flat inside a cage - together with 19 other cats), feral kittens, and of course the cat I took in last week... he was doing well, but not sure he recognised me. I think he's due to be rehomed in Essex.. fingers crossed.

After we were done (about midday) I was invited inside their house for a cup of tea and greeted by another 8 cats residing in their conservatory, and then opening the door leading into the kitchen I suddenly had 6 dogs jumping up on me!
The woman running the place (Barbara) and her husband told me each dogs story, and one of the dogs, a gorgeous black staff with white socks had been involved in dog fighting... a woman called up and said she suspected her grandson to be involved in dog fighting, so Barbara went straight to their flat in Peckham (B is a tough woman) and picked the dog up - he was skinny and covered in bites and wounds. I could not believe it cos this dog was just so soppy and took to me instantly. I ended up sitting on the floor with the dog literally hugging me refusing to let go while I tried drinking my tea! It was hard not to fall in love...  :Luv:

I did fall in love with one cat, she was a young female, maybe a bit less than a year old. She was black with white long socks on all 4 paws. She was reserved though!

I'm going back Tuesday morning, and plan for this to become a regular weekly thing, timetables allowing! (well, mainly my timetable!)

Anyone curious about the place, here is the link, and you can see the beautiful staff under ''Dogs Seeking Home''

So pleased you had a good time .... is there a time limit on how long it should take you do the cleaning and scooping?  I would have thought as long as it gets done they would be happy for you to talk the kitties and let them know they are special and will get a forever home soon.

The two shy cats that were found with 19 others are the brothers of my two! I feel extremely guilty at leaving those two behind, Chianti and Cosmos (i think), and I visit the website every couple of weeks to see if they have found a home. I hated having to choose, but I couldn't take four. Riley and Digby have come on really well since I got them - it was in the middle of Feb - so those two poor boys have been there a good while.

I so hope Chianti and Cosmos find a family soon.

Yes - Chianti and Cosmos are still there... they've been there very long now! They are stunning boys and they want to be rehomed as a pair, which I guess is why it's so hard, especially as one of them (the black one) is very scared of humans. But they're both dying to see the outside world!!

Both mine were really scared at first and one of them still doesn't really like it when I am on my feet! I think they must have kicked a lot - not intentionally - but with 21 cats in a small apartment there must have been lots of cats underfoot.

It's funny cause he is all over me when I'm on the sofa or in bed, but likes to keep well clear of my feet especially if I have shoes on.

Yeah if I had space, I would more than consider.. think 3 cats and possibly a future dog would prove too much for this house!

I'm off tomorrow morning to scoop poop again... looking forward to it!
