Title: Jamesons right eye is shut
Post by: tigerbaby on June 22, 2008, 01:25:44 AM
He woke up about half an hour ago, but can only open the left eye. It seem to be annoying him, and he's been trying to clean it. It looks slightly swollen. He's been fine since he came back from the fight - no signs of injury. Does it sometimes take a while for an infection to break out, if that is what it is? It could be that he got a scratch or something. Or can it be anything? Is there such thing as eyedrops for cats? I will leave it for a while and see how it looks tomorrow.

Yes there are eye drops for cats but they come from the vets.

It maybe OK in the morning but if it is looking bad you need to contact a vet.

Wipe it as Hannah suggests, if there is any mess but otherwise best to leave it, I think.

Hope it will be back to normal in the morning

I thought the same thing too, we used to have a dog that had hay fever but never known a cat to have it.  Mine's really bad at the moment with the wind blowing the pollen around so maybe it is the pollen or the wind and not anything serious.

Fingers and paws crossed.

If you bathe it with a cloth dampened in slightly saline water, you will be able to have a better look. A fight abscess does take a while to emerge and you need to keep a watch out as there is a chance that, that close to the eye, it could cause pressure on the eyeball and optic nerve. So, any sign of inflammation, closed third eyelid etc, get off to the vet ASAP. And send the bill to to the stupid woman next door  >:(

Poor boy   It may be something of nothing, but if it's still a problem tomorrow I'd take him to the vet.  Given that you know he's been in a bit of a fight with another cat, it would be advisable to have a vet check it over to make sure he hasn't been scratched in the eye.

Yes, cats can get a type of hayfever ( Smartie has had it -seems to be ok at the moment ) .
The vet called it seasonal asthma, but it was all coughing with him , eyes were ok .

Hi all, thanks for your replies. His eye is still not better - it's not completely shut at least, and he'll open it completely at times, but it still looks a bit swollen and he only has it half open most of the time. I will call the vet tomorrow. He doesn't seem like he's in pain or discomfort anywhere else which is good. He is running around looking pretty happy. When he next comes in I'll give it a wipe as suggested.

I just wiped his eye with a bit of boiled cooled water - don't have saline at home, can I put a teeny bit of seasalt in the water or is that a no-no?

Salt is salt, so if you are doing a saline bath, you can make your own just as well   Be careful to keep it very dilute round the eyes.
