Title: Toothache ??? MR Misty going for Dental Tommorrow !!!
Post by: Stuart on June 16, 2008, 22:00:16 PM
over the past couple of week's Misty's eye's have been watering and seems to be a small amount of crusty discharge like sleep
I seem to remember reading something that this can also be a sign of Toothache, is this right ?? I did have a look ontinternet
but could find no definitive answer..... rest assured peeps, I shall be phoning the vet tommorrow, but Just thought I'd ask the
question to see what the experts think  :)

You are right to check but it could just be dust or pollen or something.  That happened to Blip a few days ago.  Does Misty take food away from the bowl to eat?  That is often a sign as they associate the bowl with pain.

Let us know, anyway.

Yes Christine, Misty does take His food away from the dish to eat it, not all the time but He has been doing it more
regulary just recently  :scared: . The Vets are in Fraserburgh between 2 - 3 pm today so I'll take him down then
as Misty is 17 I'm also Very concerned about the anesthetic, Did find on the net that nowadays there is a 00.1%
risk that you can lose them while under anesthetic, as it has improved over the years
I'll ask the vet about that also, but no doubt they will have a get out clause  :(

I'll keep you all updated

Thanks for the replys  ;)

It is a worry, isn't it, but let's see what Misty needs to have done first   (easy for me to say, I know).  We've had a number of older puds having ops on here recently and I have just been speaking to a friend of mine (well, our Chairman  :evillaugh:) whose older cat, Nina, had a dental only yesterday.  She's right as rain today.

Let us know, Stuart.

Stuart my Dragan was 17 with pancreatitis and a heart murmur when he had a dental and he was bright as a button afterwards with no after effects whatsoever.  My vet had him on fluids throughout and I definitely saw a difference in his recovery compared with the previous year when my old vet didn't put him on fluids

It could just be that he has a wee eye infection flaring or something in the house is aggravating it.  Do you use the plug in or automatic air fresheners at all??  these can really annoy cats eyes.

If it is his mouth that is the problem and its not the teeth but the gums causing the problem I would be inclined to discuss Ovarid as an option rather than surgery.  Taking out teeth when the gums are the problem as a first step we don't agree with now that we have seen the benefits, especially in older cats, of using Ovarid to calm the gum irritation.  We have 2 old timers on the Ovarid once a week and its worked wonders especially as 1 of the oldies can't go under for an op as he takes a reaction to the anaesthetic.

At his age I would still see the vet and get him checked over to be on the safe side, but I would be looking at surgery as a last resort if it is gum problems.

Let us know how you get on.

Ok, the vet was ( I thought ? a bit rough with Misty  >:( ) causing his mouth to bleed, then saying to me " He requires a dental, you can see the Blood"
I said " Is that not because of your Poking ?? "  >:( >:( >:( I then mentioned Misty is on Fortekor 2.5's and she proceeded to prod the Kidney area, which made
Misty skrill out in pain, turn round and bite ME

:censored: vet

anyway, she thinks there is a Molar requiring removal, I have phoned the main surgery for an appointment, but she has also given me a course of antibiotics
as there is slight inflamation of the gums  :( , it's a 5 day course, so I dont know if they will be able to do it b4 then
(getting worried I might get a phone from work to go offshore)

and Ill remember to mention Fluids and Ovarid
Thanks MM & MKR  ;)

I'll keep you posted on the outcome

Stuart....

Hi Stuart

If you're not 100% satisfied with the answer you got from the vet and bearing in mind her age and other health issues then I would be inclined to suggest you possibly seek another opinion, that way you are sure of the possible treatment route if they both agree before putting her through the ordeal of anaesthetic.

Keep us posted and good luck

oooh piccie while I was typing!!!  :Luv2:  looks just like my Yoda that was in the cat comp! :Luv2:

My old man Henry had a dental about 2 months ago, and has CRF. We were warned that there is a higher risk because of his age and kidney issues. He had an injection to give his kidneys a slight boost and he was on a drip for fluids for 24 hours before he went under. He made a massive difference to him overall. Only difference is he needs to tilt his head while eating as only one side has teeth.

Ok, MR Misty is going in tommorrow at 8:30 am for the Dental, and I dont mind admitting I'm quite  :scared:
dont know what time He's going in at But I asked over the Phone about the Fluids and was told "Yes" I
also asked if it was absolutley necessary for Him to have the Molar Removed, and same again the answer
was "Yes", how can she know this with only a 5 second poke at it to make it bleed ???
MKR, getting another opinion is a little difficult as I have left my old vet's due to unprofessionalism (long story)
and the other vet's in our area that I know of, have heard several story's telling me they are only interested
in money..
this vet that was poking about Misty, I haven't seen her before, ( I Dont Like Her ) there is usually another
lady vet whom I see and she takes the time to explain things ( much prefer her )

maybe it will be Her that's doing the op?? will wait and see

thanks for all your replies and wish us Luck  ;)

Bob was still merrily going in for dentals until he died age 19 (of unrelated causes). It will seem like a new lease of life once it is done, and left, it will drain the vitality out of Misty. You are doing the right thing. If there was nothing wrong, a poke would not make it bleed ....

Good luck, just make sure you get in all Misty's favourite treats ready to make the biggest fuss ever!!

Blip was very groggy for a while after her dental op, Stuart.  We feel awful when we cant explain to them, dont we?  But Misty will feel much better in a day or so without that nasty toothache.

  to both of you.

Your right Christine, it would be great if we could tell them we're only helping them feel better

Mr Misty has spent the whole day sleeping ( and still is ) He moved from the floor to the bedroom and curled up on the bed
I watched him get up, jump down and proceed to spew  but there was only bile, at that point I did try to give Him a
small amount of food, He had a nibble and decided " not just now " He then wobbled to the spare Bedroom where it is
darker and quieter, he spent most of the afternoon there, untill a couple of hours ago when he appeared back in the living
room to settle down on His chair..

this photo was taken about an hour ago....

and this one 10 mins ago

Still a bit groggy but He's more alert and aware now :Luv: I'll try him with some more food later

edit: the blood on the left forearm must be blood from the extraction because its just matted fur
Gee!!  for £101 you'd have thought they'd have cleaned him up as well

That later picture is exactly what Blip looked like at this sort of point after her op.  You would think they might have washed Mistys leg though!  Never mind, you and he can do that tomorrow.

He'll be fine tomorrow. Clapton has been through 4 or 5 extractions and usually is eating within hours. The first 2 teeth he had out, he scoffed some food the minute he got in. Poor Misty  :ahh:

How many vets I could of punched because they made Ollie's mouth bleed  >:( Far too rough I thought.

£101 for 2 teeth out  I paid £190 for Ollie and he had 16 teeth out and bloods were included.

But I can say Ollie has only got better as Mr Misty will

Glad he's doing fine  :)

It took Blip about a week, even with daily Metacam, to get completely back to normal.  It just took me that long after my own dental work so I am sure little Misty is well on the way to recovery, Stuart.

Gentle ear tugs to him from me  :Luv:

He is getting there though, He's had about a pouch and a half today, Plus 4 Big prawns (which he had no trouble scoffing)
although I did notice he was eating on the side of the mouth where no teeth were taken out.
I'm also giving Him a Chicken Breast every night (just to tide Him through till morning  ;) ) I cut it up into small pieces and the
dish is usually clean intmornin  ;D

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes  :)
