Title: Please pray for sickly kittens
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on June 07, 2008, 12:41:03 PM
Folks, I've just taken in some sickly kittens. They are supposed to be 7 weeks but look more like 3-4 weeks. Their bones are sticking through their fur, they're dopey and shaking and just not right. A couple are smaller than the others and won't eat, 1 has one eye bigger than the other and another has just passed a load of green mucus when using the tray.

The mum is a semi feral we are arranging to get trapped and spayed as a matter of urgency as she may already be pregnant again.  :(

The vet can't see me until 4pm, so until then please keep your fingers crossed. I've never seen kittens in such a state.

Can't get pics at the moment but they are all so pretty, I'm breaking my heart here.  :'( :'( :'(

Sending lots of love and thoughts their way.  If you need my help in any way, give me a shout.  If they make it through the next few hours, they sound like perfect candidates for an intensive care unit, if they could make the journey.

Julie if they won't eat, try syringing them some glucose dlluted in water, at least it would give them some energy to fight.  I keep some karo syrup that I got from the States for my real sickly ones, it was recommended in one of my handrearing books and I couldn't get any here, it's basically a corn syrup I think, but basically an energy boost.  Also have nutri drops which do the same thing.

It's heartbreaking to see such little babes suffering, all  :Luv2: and  to all of you .

Thanks, all!  :Luv:

I'm wondering if they might have enteritus. This mucus looked like pure bile to me.  :( Our vets are brill and bound to have all the stuff I'll need. All I can do at this stage is wait for 4pm to come.

Not had a great deal of luck with kittens so far this year.  :tired:

UPDATE

The vet says although they are in a bad way, we've got them just in time. They are suffering from malnutrian and starvation as well as probably lots of worms. The lady that had them was probably doing just enough to keep them alive, but they haven't been thriving for weeks by the look of things. The immediate plan is to worm them (Panacur paste) and start them on a diet of Royal Canin sensitivity. I've also got to give them a pinch each of Protexin each day.

It's possible 1 or 2 may have to go on a drip if they deteriorate, but for now they have all tucked into this new food and seem to quite like it.  :)

We will worry about the sticky eyes later as they can't have antibiotics yet, so just the usual bathing.  :shy:

When OH returns home tomorrow with the camera, I'll get some pics. They are so pretty! B & W but all splodgy!  :briggin:

Glad things are looking up for them - If they have any chance then they couldn't be in a better place right now. I have an almost full bag of RC sensitive. The vet one. If it's any good, let me know and I can drop it over to Caroline next week.

Oh, yes please, Mark!  :) Bournes only had enough to last them for about 3-4 days so I'm going to need some more.  ;)

They seem to be perking up a bit already. The bigger 2 are even playing.  :wow: We've had a few 'motions' as well, and I've never heard kittens pass wind quite like it. Their poor intestines must be in a hell of a state.  :(

Aw PB what a shame!    That must be an upsetting ordeal for you to have to go through!

RIP Little one x

Please keep up the brilliant work you are doing with these kits....and the very best of luck with them!  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

...Makes me angry though to think of all the people who are breeding and putting in ads for ridiculous prices....how dare they? Have they ever truly thought about how things in birth etc can go wrong!  >:(

So sorry to hear that one of the little ones has gone to the Bridge, I know how devastating it is to lose such a little life.

Keep up the brilliant work with the others, you are doing great and without you none of them would be here now. :Luv2: :Luv2:

Sorry Julie,

As Lesley said, the others wouldn't be around if it wasn't for you. You could only do your best against the odds

The food is dry - is that OK? - It's RC S/O - annoying as I had a box of wet and ended up mising it in with the hedgie food to use it up. Just want to double check that it isn't specifically for kittens?

Anyway, don't know the best way of getting it to you - just let me know

I bough it for Alice originally but she wouldn't eat it.
Title: Re: Please pray for sickly kittens
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on June 08, 2008, 09:20:16 AM
Mark, dry would be fine. The bigger ones look as though they may like to try biscuits. For the smallest, I can soak them. They'll be really useful. I'll call you later to arrange a drop off. Thanks!

I've just checked the others and they are sleeping soundly. Terry and I are still reeling because we thought they would pick up now after the vet visit. I'm not taking more chances than I need to, though, and I'm going to liquidise some food and syringe feed the smallest 2 as I'm not sure they're eating anything yet. I've tried finger feeding and they seem to be gagging on the lumps. I think this woman they came from, who told me they were all eating okay, wasn't looking very well and probably the little ones were just surviving on licking the gravy.  :(

I'm going to ask the vet to send the little one off for cremation, as I can't bury him without digging up the patio. I can't do anything else for him...  :'( :'( :'(

I just looked at the bag and it looks like there is only 1/2 left. I also have 1/2 bag of sensible 33 if that's any good? - The sensible 33 is the sensible diet but not as much so as the 33 I think?

You could also take some of the orijen (grain free) if that's any help? - it's 75% meat + 25% fruit vegetables, prebiotics etc.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts.

It bothered me that this little one went to the bridge without a name, so I've decided that in acknowledgement of where I live, the remaining 5 will be named after the Cinque Ports - Romney, Hythe, Hastings, Dover and Sandwich.  :Luv2:

Pics will be taken and uploaded this afternoon, but first we have the grim task of taking the bridge babe to the vets.  :'(

I'm so sorry to hear of the little one losing their fight... sometimes no matter what we do we can't save them... but it never ever makes it easier to lose them.   I know just how hard it can be to lose the little ones.

I think that's a lovely idea to have him cremated and at least that way he will have somewhere to call home. :)

Good luck and lots of positive vibes for the remaining teenies.  Just remember that you're doing your best for them and without you none of them would be here.

Here's a few basic piccies. Hastings decided to avoid the paparazzi.  :evillaugh: But he is now transformed into a little piglet who loves his new diet, and is the most improved of the lot so I forgive him anything.  :briggin:

After a chat with Caroline, our welfare officer, and Isobel the vet nurse, we concluded that the smallest of these babes were not weaned properly. The lady who had been attempting to hand rear them following their mum rejecting them, thought she saw them eating and assured me that were eating Felix well when in fact, all they could do was lick the gravy. Slowly, they have been wasting away and some have developed the trots.  :'(

I'm now syringe feeding Sandwich and Dover and they're gulping it down. With any luck, the sensitivity diet will calm their bowls down n a few days. All we can do is keep at it and hope they pull through.  :Luv2:

Well, little Sandwich continues to worry us.  :( After consulting with Caroline, we are going to reduce the amount we feed him but increase the frequency as we may be in danger of overloading him with protein. He shows no interest in the food bowl, while all the others are getting better at eating. He does love a cuddle and the minute I sit down, he's crawling up my leg. But usually he just sits in the corner of the pen all by himself curled in a tiny ball.  :'( We're giving him lots and lots of cuddles and strokes and he does manage to odd purr.  :briggin: I have to say, though, we're viewing every day with Sandwich as a bonus.  :Luv: :'(

Dover is still small, but we can see he has grown a little and are hoping he may be alright. He's also a mummy's boy and loves to sit on my lap keeping Sandwich company.  :Luv:

The other 3 are improving well and much more active than when they arrived, and although Hastings still has the trots, he's keeping his intake of food and water very high and so hopefully the vet will be able to give him to meds for this soon.  ;)

In our local "Range", they do a "ferret" bag, basically a bag for ferrets to hide in, but it makes a brilliant pouch for carrying little ones around in and even has a strap to put over your shoulder.  If you thinik it would help little Sandwich I will get you one and post it up there. :Luv2:

Julie asked me to pass this news on - rather than reword, I just copied her email  ;D

Well, you could blow us down with a feather here!

We were getting low on the Royal Canin, so as some of them had improved a great deal, I thought we'd go back to the Felix. Guess whose little nose was first to sniff the air and went straight to the bowl and started to eat???

Little Sandwich appears to have been holding out for Felix and just didn't like the Royal Canin. We will continue the regime of feeding little and often, but this is the best development we've had for yonks!! Mark, please tell the purrs people as I'm off to work in a mo... Lets hope this is the start of him/her getting better.

Jxx

Oh PB... I'm really sorry to hear about Dover

Sometimes though no matter how much we will it the little ones are just not meant to stay in this world. It doesn't make the whole thing any easier but try to think that at least you have given the little ones lots of love and attention so that they may know what love is before they go to the bridge.

I know how heartbreaking it is to lose them so young.  But you are doing the best you can for them and that is all that they would ever ask

Well, I've just returned from the vet. Apart from little Sandwich being in a bad way, something needed to be done about Hastings' tum. He was so blown up with gas, hewas  like a little barrel and constantly shovelling food in one end then pooing it out of the other.

Rob the vet has decided to keep them both in. Sandwich is dehydrated and is going on a drip, and Hastings needs special meds to calm his system down. Rob is a brilliant vet and we trust his judgement, but he said it looks bleak for them both. I have to say I'm just about out of bravery now, and I do feel like a coward but I am also relieved that I won't have to sit and watch them pass away. And I know they couldn't be in a better place and the nurses will love them both to bits.  :Luv: I could never be a vet nurse - imagine having to deal with things like this every day?  :(

Romney and Hythe have come back with me and are having some treatment to clear up their mild diarreagh. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we can at least save these 2.  :tired:

Thanks everyone for all your support and kind wishes. It's a bit of a roller coaster here and it's so good knowing folks care.  :cuddle:

Rob the vet called me last night to say he thought Sandwich and Hastings would be better off with me. He's pumped them full of meds and says he couldn't do anything more than I am doing. So off I went to collect them again.  :tired:

Sandwich is now on 4 different meds, as well as special rehydrating drink and royal canin recovery mush - which she really seems to love and eats without any forcing.  :Luv: Hastings (or Foul Bowels) is also on 2 kinds of diarreagh treatment, but is still bombing around like a lunatic even though he looks 9 months pregnant with that belly. Rob has sent samples of both their poo for analysis just in case they have some kind of digestive virus, but he's sure this is all due to a very poor nutritional start in life.

Rob says all the time Sandwich is trying to make a go of it, he'll keep supporting her, and in even the few hours he had her he saw she's still got some spirit. As weak as she is, she still manage to swipe at Hastings when he stood on her tail.  :evillaugh:

But do the math... This litter is supposed to be 8 weeks old and Romney (the biggest of the litter) weighed 450g and Sandwich weighed 120g. We need a miracle.  :wish:

Both Sandwich and Hastings are back to see Rob tomorrow. I have a sad feeling we won't be bringing either of them back.  :'( :'(

Little Sandwich has not improved at all. No matter what we try to feed her, she only tibbles and isn't eating enough to keep a sparrow going. I am syringing her with the dyhydration fluid 3 times a day, which is hopefully keeping her comfortable. All she wants is to be cuddled all the time and as soon as she sees you, she cries to be picked up and buries her head in your chest and nods off to sleep. We don't mind that, of course, but we can't even get her to eat from our fingers now. We are also expecting her to pass away at any minute and the stress is horrific.

Hastings is now so bloated that he can barely walk. He's also started to be sick, which is worrying. I'm afraid I'm just too scared to look after him at the moment as something is going to rupture inside him before long and it's just going to be horrid, I know.  :'( I'm going to ask Rob to keep him in, that's if Rob feels there are still things we can do for Hastings.  :scared:

I'm asking myself if we are keeping these kittens going for us, or for them. Ultimately, Rob will decide and he knows we are feeling emotional about them... but I can't keep them going if there is no hope and so far, nothing is working.

Some news...

I became so concerned about Hastings' tum overnight, I called Rob the vet as soon as they opened and Rob told me to bring them both straight in.  :briggin: Rob is never one to give up on a fight, and has taken Hastings for a scan. If this swelling in fluid, it's bad news and could be an indication of FIP. But Rob will drain the fluid and send it off for analysis.  :'(

Little Sandwich, who yelled all the way there, and all the way back, seems to have stuck a middle claw up to the world and is still not giving in. It appears I got her weight a little wrong before and she weighed 180g on Wednesday, not 120g as I thought. Today, she had managed to gain 40g and is now 220g.  :wow: I think the ultra rich recovery food and the rehydration fluid might be responsible for the gain.  ;) She's still a weak little soul and we are worried sick about her, but she's got spirit and if she's prepared to keep trying, so are we.  :naughty:

Hi, all

We've had some devastating news here. After a full day of tests and trying to find what's wrong with Hastings tum, Rob finally succeeded is getting a blood sample - not easy in a kitten this small - and Hastings has proved to be FIV+. Rob has said given all these dice against us, there was nothing left we could do for Hastings. He went to the Bridge this afternoon.

I have to tell you my OH and I are in bits. Not a brilliant week for us in Canterbury.  :'( :'(

Thanks, everybody  :thanks:

Little Sandwich seems to have perked up a little today.  :briggin: The vetnurse dug out a high calorie food suppliment that you mix with water. It looks and smells a bit like chicken soup. She been having a lap at that and got absolutely plastered in the stuff.  :evillaugh: If she keeps going and gaining weight, who are we to argue? I still don't think she's eating anything like enough, but the scales prove me wrong.  :shy:

If they all do well, and grow as they should, we'll get them tested to confirm the FIV status later. If they are positive, they'll be rehomed as indoor kitties - but after what these babies are going through, nothing short of a millionaire who will hand feed them peeled shrimps need apply.  :agree:

Well, the remaining 3 seem to be doing well. Little Sandwich is still very small, of course, but she's showing a keen interest in food now and is even first, on occasion, to have her nose in the bowl at feedtime.  :naughty: I am just dying to know what her current weight is, but our kitchen scales are not very good. She'll be going back later in the week for another once over, so we'll know more then.  :)

The biggest one, Romney, is looking quite healthy and now a decent size for rehoming so we are getting him checked over and tested at the end of the week. If he passes his physical and FIV test, we plan to pair him with another kitten from a different litter so he'll have a pal to grow up with. There is already a nice sounding couple, who want 2 kittens, who have fallen for his photo.  :briggin:

This will leave Hythe and Sandwich, who will need at least another month, I would think. But so far, so good.  ;)

I am not sure if Mark has already posted this but sadly i received this from PB (julie) this morning. Thoughts to her and the other little babes.. Sandwich and her little mates deserved better...!

am sorry to have to say we found Sandwich collapsed this morning. There wasn't time to seek help, and any movement would have distressed her more. She passed away in my arms 25 mins later. She battled right to the end and it was bloody horrible! Can someone please tell the folks on Purrs as I don't think I have the strenght to go over it again.

I'm calling Rob (the vet treating these kittens) now and I want him to check over the last 2. I think we should go for the full Glasgow/Bristol report on them. I think Desley from Purrs may be right and we are dealing with FeLV. We need to be 100% sure as we cannot allow the last 2 to go this way

Can anyone let me know how much the Glasgow/Bristol test costs and also how long it takes to do pls?

Julie I'm so sorry to hear the news, you did all you can for these little ones, although I know that is no consolation at this time, and they knew love and warmth that they would never have known otherwise.  Some people say that kittens are the easy part of rescue, compared to the older neglected puss,  but you and I both know that this is not the case, they break your heart into a thousand pieces.

Take care and sending lots of love to you and the rest of the babies.  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

I'm not sure on cost Sharon but I think it takes about five days for the results to come back.

Julie has been through so much with these babes.  Could the new Memorial fund pay for the tests, to ease the worry that poor Julie is going through with these last two little babies.  I think she deserves some help from Purrs with these, after all the heartache she has been through.  :Luv2:
Title: Re: Please pray for sickly kittens

Julie has an appointment at 11ish today for Romney and Hastings... I have spoken to HQ and they kind of agree that a test would be good as the snap test will only tell half the story the money spent on that might as well go toward the Bristol test that is more conclusive and tells us more.. I do have a home lined up for Romney as Julies other post mentioned...

I have to say that we seem to be dealing with alot of poorly cats lately as on of shot from local RSPCA giving our number out and them being full up (and other rescues)...

I have just read up on the Memorial Fund (and Busters story)... let us see how things are and what (if any their needs may be!).. We are not a well off branch but we do what we can...and so far we are keeping our heads above water...

Update.. Both of PB remaining kittens have been blood tested. Romney is clear but Hythe has a reading that the vets where not happy with and showed so very slight abnormality - nowhere near as bad as Hastings result was, though so blood work has been sent to Bristol .

Results will be known around Friday we hope..

I dont know the results or anything, but Rob is great and he decided to send blood away even with us asking him to.  I can only image that something isnt right, but it doesnt nec mean we are dealing with FIV again... Good news that Romney is clear though. I do feel that we are dealing with two litters here...

Hi, folks.   Thanks to everyone for all your kind words and wishes.  :Luv:

I'm feeling quite drained now. It was horrid and obvious as soon as I found her that she only had minutes left. I couldn't think of a painless way to end her suffering so I just sat talking and singing to her. I hope I helped her a little, but she kept crying out and it broke my heart... Terry has now told me he she was eating and fine at 7.30am, so all this happened within the space of an hour.  :(

Yes, this mornings tests still show NEG for FeLV but a very slight raised result for FIV. Rob showed me the slides and it's very similar to a human pregnancy test, with a blue band running down the strip if it's positive. Hythe's result show a feint 'blip' in the strip, but not a full band as Hastings was. The Bristol results will confirm one way or another. I can promise you Romney and Hythe are not going to go through this and if the Bristol results are positive, we will say goodbye to them on our terms when we are ready before they are stolen from us like the others.  :'( :'(

I didn't stop to ask about the costs, I'm afraid, as my head is still spinning. Maybe Sharon or Mark could phone and ask?

It's a good job I don't drink because I'd be as  :censored: as a frog by now. Instead I shall take my revenge on some Thorntons.  :shy:

Romney and Hythe have been making real progress in the last 48 hours, and I'm more hopeful than I've ever been about them. Hythe is still quite small but he seems to be following Romney's lead and maturing well. There always seems to be a stage when they become more independent and don't need you as much. They have both learned to climb since yesterday, and they have formed an escape committee - it's always a sign they are getting ready for higher and better things when they show an interest in the world outside the room, I think.

And believe it or not, I also like it when they start being naughty!  :evillaugh: :) Today, Romney was caught fleeing from the linen cupboard dragging my daughter's bra in his teeth. We think he had plans to construct a DIY hammock.

I will be so shocked and upset if their bloods come back with horrid results. But this whole experience has been a roller coaster and I must learn not to get my hopes up.  :tired:

As Teresa said elsewhere I think, it really does help to know everyone is rooting for these babies. It can feel very lonely and a bit daunting thinking you have sole charge of these precious little things.  :innocent:

Regardless of the outcome PB you are doing a wondeful job with the little ones and have shown them love, affection and how to enjoy their little lives, no matter how short a time that may be.  I know it doesn't make it any easier but you have all of us here rooting for you and the little ones.

Romney and Hythe are bombing around like lunatics today. They are certainly pushing boundaries and finding new ways to be naughty. :evillaugh: I can't see a thing wrong with them. Still looking a tad thin, of course, but they have nice sparkly eyes and glossy coats now - signs of their improved diet taking effect, I'm sure.  :)

We still haven't heard back from Bristol, but Rob will call me as soon as he knows. He may even chivvy them if we hear nothing by the end of today. I'm trying not to get my hopes up as they could still have nasties in their bloodstream, but they no longer look as weak and sleepy as they were at the start of the week.  :shy:

Glad to hear this, and even if they do have FIV, it isn't a death sentence, so hopefully these two are now strong enough to deal with it.

Rob says we still need to retest in 2 months and they can't be rehomed with other cats, just in case. But they are turning into complete nutters and trashing the place and look so fit and healthy now... I think we're in the clear!  :sneaky:

They have just returned from another visit to Rob for a once over before we let them go. He's very pleased with their overal condition but doesn't want to vac yet just in case they have a reaction. So if the prospective new owners are prepared to carry on the groundwork of building them up with good quality food, and bring them back for vac and retesting, we will let them go probably at the weekend. We do have a couple interested in their profile, but they haven't viewed them yet as they were waiting until we felt happy Romney and Hythe are going to thrive. They seem really nice people and have been asking about how they're doing every few days, and will come to see them for the first time on Friday. :)

I'll try to get some more piccies later. Romney has turned into a prissy bossy-boots and is constantly grooming his little brother Hythe as he thinks Hythe is too small to do it himself.  :evillaugh:

Romney and Hythe will be going to their forever home tomorrow!  :yesss: :yesss: :yesss:

The couple came to see them this evening and can't wait to take them home. I had to remind them they need to get some provisions in first because they really wanted to take them home tonight.  :evillaugh: A wonderful couple who listening intently to all my instructions and will spoil the boys rotten.  :Flowers:

The kittens still have the trots on occasion, but Rob the vet thinks this is due to mild food intolerance due to their very poor weaning. We've tried everything to clear it up so we know it can't be worms or a virus. We expect they'll grow out of it in time. Apart from that, they are little jumping beans of naughtiness.

We will have a photo shoot before they go, which I've been trying to find time for so really must make the effort. For a change, I won't be sad to wave them goodbye. I'll be jumping up and down with pride and I expect a tear or two of relief will fall.  :blow kiss:

Aw, shucks!  You guys are so kind!  :blow kiss: It could go to a girl's head, you know!  :evillaugh:

Teresa, those are lovely words. Actually, OH used to be a professional photographer and he does seem to have a gift in getting them to 'watch the birdie'.  :evillaugh: Yes, these kittens have aged me the odd decade or so but I do feel like I've run a marathon and reached the finishing post without needing an ambulance.  :) Of course, I will still see the little faces of the ones who didn't make it for quite some time.  :'(

The couple that took them are absolutely first rate and I couldn't have wished for a better home for them. The husband quietly emptied his wallet and squeezed a fistful of notes in my hand as they left. So a great start on paying the bills for this lot!  :wow:  :evillaugh:  And they had the wonderful thought of calling us an hour or so later after getting home to tell us Romney and Hythe had already eaten, seemed to quite like their new quarters, and had come up to them for cuddles.  :naughty:

I have already emailed Sharon and Caroline to say I'm willing to be 'on take' for the next batch we get asked to take.... it's too ruddy quiet here already!

Just want to say that Julie did a great job with these kittens and just so happened i had a lovely home line up for them, and these lovely people stuck through thick and thin waiting for them... We dont get people like that every often and again it was a call i spent ages on the phone to telling them we didnt have any cutie ready healthy and waiting kittens ready yet.. BUT we did have some that were going through a bad patch and abit unwell and not sure if they will pull through, but what about them, and would you wait until they were ready to go.. AND by darn they said YES>>>>>>>>>>>>>!

Unbelievable... normally i never mention cats that are not ready for rehoming when i get calls, but sometimes you get vibes and you realise that these people are so nice that they might take on a poorly puss cat and take a leap of faith.. As it happens these two pulled through and just makes one think that if i hadnt spent an extra few minutes on the phone we would of missed these lovely people giving these two very lucky kittens a lovely home.

and the donation  has help as you can imagine the hefty vet bill we have had for these kittens.. some of which never made it of course..
