Title: How long do I keep Tibby in the House for?
Post by: JadesMum on June 05, 2008, 14:27:00 PM
Got Tibby (Black and White cat) from CPL on Sat 24th May 2008.
He is more trusting of me, but still a bit jumpy, expecially if I drop something or make a loud noise.
He wants to be friends with my other cat (Tabby) Lucy - she does not want to know him.
How long do I keep him in the house before I can let him use the cat door and go out?
I was thinking 4 weeks?
I just hope he does not run off. had Lucy since she was 7 weeks, so did not have that problem with her. :scared:
Any advise would be great.

I think you are meant to keep them in six weeks, did CP not tell you how long it should be?

They said about 4 weeks - but I just thought maybe someone on here has had a similar experience and wondered what and how long they kept them in for. Thanks :-)

I'd try for six if you can, have you tried doing a search, i'm sure you can't be the first person to ask!

Every cat is different I think, just make sure he knows his name or responds to his food being shaken or a whistle or something and then 4 weeks at the very least, make sure he's hungry when he's out initially all that sort of stuff.

He is beautiful  :Luv:

4 weeks, you need to establish a bond and some recall, some do take longer to settle.

I think I kept Misa and Sasa in for 6 weeks and then when I opened the door they were too scared to go out, even though the pair of them had been sitting loking out for ages  ;D

Thank you all!
I have also been told to put butter on his paws.
Probably an old wives tale - but I did it with Lucy anyway - lol

Dont bother with the mess!!

If you let them out before a meal they should be keener for the food bribe when you want them back in

Yes, butter on paws  is certainly an old wives tail.

When people adopt from us we ask that kittens are kept in until they have been neutered/spayed and cats for 8 weeks in the hope they will be kept in at least 4. If we said 4 many people would possible let them out after two.

Our adoption papers say 6 weeks, and I try to stick to 6 weeks, but I know not everyone that adopts from us does that.
