Title: A poor stray and a dish of Tea
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on January 17, 2007, 18:21:32 PM
I`d like you to meet Katy Teabag, just caught her this afternoon, she had evidently been living under a tree at the side of a road since before Christmas. At first glance she doesnt look too bad, but this poor girl has a bald back, bald ankles front and back and slight bald patches on her ears as well as 2 small neck wounds. Vet is concerned because she looks slightly jaundiced, her tummy is very gassy possible due to the fact she has been fed by workmen- cows milk for dinner and a dish of tea to drink, Bless those workmen at least they cared, they had been trying to catch her for 3 weeks when someone gave them my number.
Shes got a course of antibiotics , a nice warm bed and a dish of food and water but I`ve told her no more tea I`m a coffee drinker :)

Oh the dear little girl.  I hope she isn't too ill Teresa...let's hope the vet can sort her out.  I love the name Katy...used to have a dog called Kate when I was a youngster.  Did the workmen give her that name or is it one of yours?

Have to say she'd be better off at my place if she's a teabag 'cos I get through loads of the stuff!

That bed looks very cosy indeed...it's gonna be awful tonight and tomorrow so thank goodness you've brought her to safety.

Look forward to more posts on her.

Lots of love to you both

Roz

The poor little mite looks like a frightened, skinny little Blip! Katy Teabag has come to the right place at last, and in the nick of time by the sound of it. I hope you and the Paws Inn team can nurse her back to health.

It's good to know that the workmen cared enough to help her. Please give her a kiss from me.

Roz each cat I take to the vets has its own separate file on the account for optimum care and I had to come up with a name quickly, the vet nurse on duty was called Katy.
Christine she is very timid she cowers when you go near but once you make contact and stroke her she purrs for England.
Yvonne I wish I lived near enough to help

I'm sure with a little bit of the Paws Inn magic and lots of TLC from Teresa et al ths little darling will soon learn to trust again.  Well done to the workmen (even if they did give her cows milk ... it has to be better than nothing I suppose).
Foxy Zephyr and Rossi all send lots of furry headbutts and a big  :blow kiss: from me.

Poor Katy was cowering in her litter tray this morning, but has eaten dried Royal Canin kitten overnight and had a satchet of High Life with her pill this morning. She is the kind of cat that you want to pick up and cuddle and never let go and better still she enjoys being cuddled once she knows its safe.
Will take some better pictures on Sunday when Claire is here to help me.
Yes Desley the weather is pretty rough here, in fact at 4am I was feeling really smug because Katy wasnt out in it.

Andy (vet) has put her on antibiotics and wants to see her again next week I am assuming that the whites of her eyes will be less yellow then if its just infection though not sure.We will do blood tests  anyway, but as long as she is happy bright and cheerful thats the main thing. and she is so very happy now.

Katy seems to be doing remarkably well without the tea :) We got a normal poo from her this morning so hopefully all will be well.
She continues to show improvement each day and is eating well and thoroughly enjoying the safety of her pen.
Assuming all goes well and an owner doesnt come forward I have a home lined up already.

Just back from vets, Andy is really pleased with her progress he is no longer worried about jaundice as her eyes are now whiter and so she is now off medication.
He is concerned about her skin problem and has taken scrapings for culture, so its wait and see.

He`s been talking about Mange

Mange is one of the many things I know very little about. I gather it's curable but very unpleasant - poor little Katy. Also the mites are very easily transmitted between cats - have you got her isolated from the others as a precaution?

Just out of interest Stronghold kills the mites  and guess who always uses that
Title: Re: A poor stray and a dish of Tea
Post by: She on January 23, 2007, 21:32:30 PM
Hi Theresa

Just wondered if there is anything else besides Stronghold which can sort out mange.  I have lent my trap to a lady who has been feeding a little feral cat for a couple of years at least and she noticed that the cat had suddenly gone bald and looks in need of help.  So far the trap has not worked, the food disappears but no cat!  I showed her several times how to set it, advised not to feed the cat for a couple of meal times at least to hopefully entice her to go in the trap, but to no avail (she was more interested in not smudging her freshly applied fake tan at the time!!)  As I work and the cat doesn't keep any particular time pattern it is near impossible to catch her to get her to the vets, but wondered if there is anything at all that could be put in her food for example.  Not even sure if it is mange, but sounds like it and there will be foxes where she lives (they don't know where she sleeps!).  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   :thanks:

Fingers crossed Teresa, she is in the best possible hands.
She - it could be a flea allergy as well. I am sure Teresa will be able to give you some advice on how to catch this little one.
Title: Re: A poor stray and a dish of Tea
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on January 24, 2007, 08:41:36 AM
Hi She
If it is Mange this little one needs anti inflammatory to stop the itching and antibiotics as well.
Think this lady needs a wake up call and needs to be more helpful, as you know ferals ARE creatures of habit where a meal is concerned so I dont think this lady is being totally honest. Give her a notebook and ask her to keep records of days /times of sightings, has she got a neighbour who might be more helpful?
Might be worth asking vet for for some Program to put in this little ones food at least then if it turns out to be a flea problem it will help.
Are you Gina ? if so youre not a million miles away.

Back to Katy Teabag she is a happy little girl again today

Hi Teresa,

Haven't been around much for a couple of days but am so pleased to read that Katy is progressing so nicely...I'm sure that whatever is causing her fur loss will be sorted. She has found the best possible refuge....

(unlike that poor, poor greyhound that I heard about yesterday...deposited at a Police Station close to Edinburgh by a Police Officer who didn't work at that particular station, but who dropped it off there after collecting it as a stray.  The paperwork was duly filled in and the dog was placed in a holding pen.....WHERE HE WAS FORGOTTEN ABOUT FOR TEN DAYS!!! They found the remains of the poor little love yesterday when the smell alerted other people's attention to the kennel.  It is just too sad for words. There will be an investigation but it won't bring the dear little soul back. Absolutely heartbreaking and unforgiveable.)

She....as someone who has suffered with eczema for much of my life, I can only imagine how much this poor little cat is suffering.  If she has mange or flea allergy she will be in agony and will soon die...especially in this cold weather.  Is there any way that you can impress this info on the lady involved in trying to trap her?  I hope and pray this poor little stray will step inside the trap soon and receive the medical attention that she so obviously needs.

Lots of love to you both and all the animals in your care,

Roz

Oh no, I've been rumbled! ;)  It is me indeed.

A relative of the woman in question is one of our supporters.  She went last night to set the trap again after receiving instructions via text from me (I was sat in the vets most of last night waiting my turn).  So we are keeping everything crossed that they will be successful today in catching her.  If they do catch her our vet will keep her in and treat her as required, that side is already sorted out.  If not, I use Program for my more timid ferals anyway, so I can provide that for her, not be a problem, at least it would make a start.

There probably is a pattern to the cat's appearance but I don't think she is really aware of it, she just puts a dish of food out and it either goes or doesn't.  She is not a cat lover in particular, but as she feeds her and feels sorry for her, she can't be all bad, although I can't imagine her taking notes for me!!

Thanks for the advice though.  Much appreciated.  Glad Katie is doing fine.  She's a very lucky girl!  ;D xx

Hey She,

How did the trapping go? It's strange that the food was disappearing. Could the bar going to the  trip plate be rusty and not slipping when the cat steps on the plate? I've had that happen. Utterly frustrating.

Poor Katy Teabag has suffered a setback, just when she started to look beautiful with her newly grown fur I noticed a couple of suspicious bald spots. We have been back to the vet who says this is not the same as the original Mange problem but he thinks this is an allergic reaction. So if no better in a couple of weeks  we will have to have allergy tests done. :(

Katy teabag used to love the Natures Menu and the Felix as good as it looks but now she is used to a better standard of service she has become increasingly fussy turning her little nose up at the wet and eating the dry. Yesterday a very special person who had no idea of this kindly donated some Gourmet Pearls which was duly served up today, in less than a minute the gourmet was eaten and Katy was doing her best impression of dish washing.
To that very kind and special person a huge  :thanks: and purrs from the Teabag.

Well after an exhausting day I realised I had used all the gourmet so took a satchet of Felix as good as it looks out to the Teabag and she duly turned her nose up. I asked her politely if she would prefer to go back to a dish of milk and cup of tea or if she would prefer to go without, the madam ate the Felix
She is one clever puss

Think I ought to be really honest about this rehoming, the lady who is taking Teabag actually came to look at Christy but the Teabag got wind of what was going on and purred her little head off and choose the lady ,poor Christy didnt stand a chance, now the lady would have happily taken Christy as well but the Teabag being a proper fussy madam will not tolerate other cats in any shape or form.
Christy says he doesnt mind putting up with me for a while longer, while the Teabag is counting the hours to packing her bags

Received this email from Katy Teabags new mum and thought it would be nice to share

Hi Teresa, just thought I'd let you know how Katy Teabag is settling in.  She was very happy to investigate her new home, spent ages rubbing her face against the furniture and my legs (a good sign I believe) and we spent the afternoon cuddling together on the sofa, which was just lovely and she couldn't stop purring.  Only thing is, when hubby came home, she went all scared and nervous and has taken sanctuary behind the sofa, doesn't she like men, have you come across this?  Paul is lovely with animals so we will give her all the time she needs, she's in good hands.
Take care
Marina

Awww what a lovely email Teresa  :)

Mupps was the same with Pete at first but now Mupps follows him everywhere. He is still scared of men and hides upstairs.

So glad Katy has kept her name and she is settling in so well  ;D

I always say that when you are feeling a little" down" in rescue something comes along out of the blue to remind you why you do rescue.
This morning I received a letter in the post with a photocopied picture of Katy Teabag exposing her tummy to the world, she says she is happy, fat and adored by her mum and dad, she also sent a cheque for £50 to the Paws Inn moggies.

I know lots of you regulars will remember her plight and will be as delighted as I am to know how happy she is, just one reason why I do rescue.
