Just woke up to the smell of cat poo wafting up the stairs and sure enough when I went downstairs there was a poo very close to the litter tray but on the carpet. Initially I really wasn't impressed. On close inspection (eww), I could see there was some fairly fresh looking blood on the poo.
Now obviously I need to call the vets when they open but I have 2 cats and I don't know which one it was. I have a guy instinct that it was Amber, but neither of them are acting ill so I don't know how to tell!
-
I would take them both in just to be on the safe side. Good luck
-
Thanks, havn't been able to get through to the vets yet but don't know what time they open. I've had to come into work - hated leaving them. But if the vets say I can bring them in today I'm off home, I only have 7 days left of work here and my cats are far more important.

Have they been wormed recently?
This sometimes happens if they have strained or passed something that scratches the bowel.
I'd just see if it happens on a regular basis before going to the vet. Was the rest of the motion normal?
-
No, it was just a pile of soggyness with very red blood, there was some very loose stuff on the mat that the litter tray sits on when we came back from a bbq on sunday night so I guess it was the same cat - but I didn't notice any blood in that, but I've never seen her doing it so I don't know which one. There was a normal solid poo in the tray so I'm pretty sure it is only one cat rather than both that is affected.
They were wormed 2 months ago.

I rushed home from work once to take Oscar into the vet for the same thing, I was told oh it just happens sometimes! I'd always advise going to the vet just in case and for your peace of mind but you've probably got nothing to worry about
-
I suppose it just looks very alarming and I was concerned by the fact that it wasn't in the litter tray, when they are normally very good at using it.
Is it better to call and book an appointment now or wait til OH gets home (earlier than me) and see if it has happened again. I don't want to be panicing unnecessarily but its very worrying.

When Alice had her first bout, the vet told me it happens sometimes with cats and just to keep an eye.
When I was googling about it, it said blood in poo for humans often means something nasty but for cats, very rarely

If it puts your mind at rest and you don't mind paying for a consultation then I would go to the Vets. There is nothing worse than putting something off and then feeling guilty later that you didn't do something when you first noticed it. Better to go to the Vet and be told that it is nothing to worry about than not go to the Vets and find out later it is something serious, in my opinion. :Luv2: :Luv2:

True, if its anything more than £50, it would be on the insurance anyway, but just a consulation wouldn't cost too much I think. If theres anything unusual when OH gets home, I'll book them a vets appointment.

The first time I had this with bertie I panicked and called my 'Mum to four Persians' friends who said just wait until there is another poo and see if there is blood. I waited, there was none and in the two and a half years I had him it only happend twice - very far apart.
So last week when I noticed in the litter tray a soft stool I thought I woud leave it at least until the next visit from them both - again because I have two I was unsure which was which - there has been nothing else and that was ten days ago and I have looked very closely!
If you would rather go to the vet fair enough but on the three ocassions I have saw this (twice with Bertie, once with the boys) it has alwways been a very soft stool and I have wondered whether it was just a bot of tummy upset from a treat or change of wet food.
I mean waiting until the next poo - with my two anyway - is only a matter of hours and certainly no more than a day so maybe just check the state of play, as you said, when either of you get home.
-
I'm going to see whats in the litter when OH gets back, I didn't reailse the occaisionaly bit of blood in stools was something that just happened sometimes. As to the cause of the loose stools, thats a bit of a mystery, their food hasn't changed, they havn't been outside all weekend because of the rain and I think its unlikely that she could have eaten anything funny around the house as I keep the kitchen door closed. So if theres still loose motions happening I think a vets visit may be required even if theres no more blood.
-
it is quite a common thing to occur Bryony and to be honest it can be a number of things not least they have been straining.
I always say that if your really worried see the vet so long as you don't mind paying the appt fee. ;) But it also doesn't do any harm to see what the next poo or 2 are like to see if there is a pattern forming.
-
I don't mind paying the appointment fee at all, its more the hassle of catching both cats and getting them in carriers, in the car and up to the vets, I don't want to put them through all that for the vet to say theres nothing wrong/its totally normal. Will see what happens when OH gets home, I'm sure I'll hear about it pretty quick if he's greeted wth what I had at 6am this morning!
-
Bryony you could ring the vet and see what they have to say. Maybe better to speak to the vet direct than receptionist
-
good idea mm
-
Yeh, I was thinking about trying that when I get home, or if OH contacts me so I know what the current situation is before I speak to them. Hopefully I'll be able to speak to the vet.
-
Hope it's ok and do keep us posted

Nothing sinister when I got home or since, although theres only been 2 number 2's since yesterday morning. Keeping a v close eye on things at the mo!
