Title: Cod liver oil for arthritis
Post by: swampmaxmum on May 22, 2008, 17:00:33 PM
I asked at the vets (nurse) about glucosamine for Max. The nurse suggested buying human cod liver oil with omega 3 and 6 first and adjusting the dose downwards. I'd not heard of this before and wondered if anyone had tried it with good effects? It doesn't give them a runny tum or anything does it? Not sure even what a cat dose (5kgs) would be.

We looked into this for the Proot - I couldn't find anything online or "official", but apparently because it's liver based cats aren't supposed to have a large quantity of it, but a quarter teaspoon twice a week is not supposed to do any harm.  He didn't get a runny tum and his coat was lovely!

I would suggest using salmopet oil rather than cod liver oil available from Zooplus http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/supplements_specialty_cat_food/fur_skin_supplements/51017

They sell body oil rather than liver.

Glucosamine is by far more effective

Wonder why they would recommend that when all the supplemetns are glucsamine based - and they are to boost what we naturally have in our joints?? Seraquin is only £7.79 for 60 from VetUK, and even chewable tablets - will see about that!!

Fish oil (not liver oil) is good for skin & coat and may help with lubrication of joints but Glucosamine actually rebuilds cartilage so much better.

Thanks everyone for the replies. His coat's fine so it's really for his stiff joints. I *think* he was given Cosequin once before (and hated it: he seems to have a small throat to get pills down - no prob with his nosh though  :shify:). I'll have to wait until a diff nurse is on duty and call back as I find it a bit strange. She was very keen on the omega 6 though. I don't want to take him in for this as he's vet phobic but to get to speak to the vet isn't easy.
Is Seraquin the same as cosequin and how big are the tablets please?
