Has only one had their cat treated with interferon for the calici virus or any other reason?

I didnt know that interferon was used for calici but there is at least one person on here who has had interferon given to her cats and cant remember who it was...............maybe Teresa at Paws Inn but not sure.
I seem to recall in the CC days that someone mentioned there was a problem caused by the use of interferon with their cat but maybe wrong and I cant remember what the illness was that the cat had except almost certain was not calichi.

I don`t know if i can be of any help to you Paree? I know a bit about it and somewhere in my house i have a booklet about it. What sort of thing did you need to know?

My cat had interferon injected into his gums when he had a dental back in October - basically because he is such an old boy and my vet says she has found it makes a big difference in the recurrence rate of gingivitis and associated problems.

Gill, are you thinking of the little kitten with the dodgy eye? It had interferon and got really ill.

I`ve heard that it can sometimes work but can also, as with this little cats case, make things worse or do nothing at all.

I was trying to find out how effective it is, before making the decision to have it done or not.
The vet says it is around £100 per vial, and he will probably require at least two, and the suggestion is that as it is injected directly into his gums, that he should be under general anesthetic to do it, as even sedation is not enough due to the pain involved for him, and you would find it hard to disagree with that conclusion. This could bring the bill to over £300 pounds and if it is not effective that's a lot of money. the bill for this in the last two weeks is £356, but then it's only money :'(

£100 per vial!! Cripes maybe it's worth asking your vet what the cost price of that is - mine was done in October and it was about £35 for the vial, so it seems as if they have a heck of a mark up on that! He had it done at the same time as having his dental so there was no additional anaesthetic, and the vet used one vial. My cat tested negative for FELV/FIV but the vet says she's had good results with it anyway at keeping gingivitis under control, so I went with what she suggested and my old boy has a much happier mouth now. (Admittedly he also has no back teeth left so nothing more to give him particular problems!)

I agree that that sounds quite expensive. We don`t have it at the practice where i work but i did foster a cat a while ago that had FIV and another vets suggested Interferon treatment. I`m sure they said it was cheaper than this but i could be wrong.

We know that Sooty doesn't have long left, so later this year will probably be on the lookout for a pair of older cats 8+. I assumed that would be easy, as I'm sure younger cats are easier to rehome, but most older cats I've seen say that they need a home on their own! I'm sure the right kitties will turn up at the right time for us though, these things have a habit of happening with perfect timing, don't they.

Tabitha is one of my monster fosters, shes worse than i write but i wouldnt want to be accused of putting people off! The furniture of her new home will be in for a shock :evillaugh:

I think interferon is an anti viral drug so i guess it could be used with calici.

A major Hurricane (Shazza) measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit in the
early hours of Monday.
Epicentre: Chelmsford, Essex.
Victims were seen wandering around aimless muttering "faaaaackin ell"
The hurricane decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage.
Several priceless collections of memento's from the Balearics and Spanish
Costa's were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historic burnt out cars
were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giro cheques
arrived.
Essex FM (County Radio Station) reported that hundreds of confused and
bewildered persons, were still trying to come to terms with the fact that
something interesting had happened in Chelmsford.
One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It was
such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom
crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm, slept through it
all. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning.
Apparently though, looting, muggings and car crime did carry on as normal.
The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny
Delight to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still
searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal
belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos
and Bone China from Poundland.

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those
unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most
sought after, items most needed include:
Fila or Burberry baseball caps
Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers)
Shell suits (female)
White sport socks
Rockport boots
Any other items usually sold in Primark.
Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs include:
Microwave meals
Tins of baked beans
Ice cream
Cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew.
22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms
£2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9
£5 will pay for a packet of B&H and a lighter to calm the nerves of those
affected.
**Breaking news**
Rescue workers found a girl in the rubble smothered in Claret "where are
you bleeding from?" they asked - "CHELMSFORD" said the girl, "woss that got to
do wiv it?"

I should point out though that this joke originated with Romford, not Chelmsford. Chelmsford is a lovely, modern, low-crime area and not totally full of chavs as per other less salubrious areas of Essex. And I originated from near Romford :evillaugh:
