One heck of a mess

How does one get soot out of a cat, will it harm him if he tries to lick it off his not-so pearly white paws?!

bath-time at fluffybunnies

more seriously though, I think I would be having a good go at brushing it out of his coat before he gets it all gluggy from licking ... Definitely don't let him lick it off himself if it is in large quantities ....

I agree with BC .... brush as much as your possibly can then give him a good bath.  I would recommend a mild shampoo or if it's really ingrained you might have to use fairy liquid.

Soot is carcinogenic so not a good idea to let him ingest it.
