She is picking at her food, so I think she needs the dental the vet said she would need at some point in Jan - I am going to ring the rescue she is from in a bit (she isn't from my rescue), to see when we can get her in. She is 18 this month though - well, she could already be 18, I am just using the date that she came into the rescue as her birthday, so a bit of a worry for an anaesthetic. She is happy to play with me though, and has been going outside, so feels OK in herself, and I can get her to eat dry, so she isn't going to starve. Am going to make sure pre-op bloods are done with her age. I'd take a pic of her, but have no idea where the camera is, which is worrying.
-
Poor puss! Lots of 's and kisses and positive vibes to Zia!
love Ruth, Keli, Rincewind and Zeratul
-
Fingers crossed Desley. Ask the vet if they will use an alternative anethestic (sp) we recently had to take one of our old girls in at 17yrs old for a dental and they didn't use the one they normally do and she came to much quicker and had no lasting effects and is doing much better now.
I know how worrying it can be though... so fingers crossed and let us know how she gets on...
xx
-
Try not to worry Des. Dragan had a dental at 17 and it improved his quality of life. You wouldn't even know he had had a general either.
-
Sending positive vibes for Zia's dental~~~~~~~
-
They are going to ring the vets tomorrow to book her in, but not sure how it will work, as she will have to have a consult first, and i can only get her there in the evening. The other thing concerning me is that it isn't my vet, so i dont know what anaesthetic they use. I have had dentals done on overweight 13 yo's with no issue, but nothing older. She is eating dry no problem though.
-
I hope she gets sorted soon and can get back to munching :Luv:
My vets only use the best GA so i dont have to worry. Will she be having fluids too Des?
-
Me too - she is eating dry no problem though.
I honestly dont know, as she isn't with my rescue, so I dont know what their vets do. i am happy with the GA my vets use, maybe I should just offer to pay, and get her done at my vets. HEre is a pic I have just taken of her, she really doesnt look her age.

Des our Miss gracie another Tortie also aged 18 had her dental done in jan of this year and sailed through it
We had bloods and used the lighter anasthetic and she was muching wet food when I picked her up and on biscuits on arrival home, she was a bit miffed as the vets only gave her one dish, at home she has 14 double bowls to chose from!
-
Thanks Liz, I hope it works out fine for her, the app is being made today
-
Her vet visit is on Sat, I hope the vet says she is OK to have a dental. She has had a nice plate of sardines for her tea though, and some dry food.
-
Fingers crossed everything goes ok for her. I assume she will have bloods done first to make sure her organs can cope with the anaesthetic? If they are ok, and they use an anaesthetic suitable for older cats, I'm sure she'll be fine and it will improve her quality of life.
-
FIngers crossed for Zia
-
If they refuse to do bloods, then she wont be having her dental there. I am actually going to see if they can do them on Sat for me, so we know there and then if she can have a dental - her original owners said that she had liver issues, but no vet records have been found, and there are no signs of it.
-
:luck: Zia, I'm sure once she's had her dental she'll feel years younger :)
-
I agree Des she does need her bloods doing
-
hope Zia's bloods come back just fine and she feels a whole lot better after her dental. Am I wrong, but doesn't Zia mean 'auntie' in italian?! good luck with it all. My vet won't do bloods on a saturday (not routine) as the labs don't work until monday, do they?
-
I hope so too - I am hoping that the rescues vet can do basic in house tests, my vet can do them on a Sat. I have found a few foods that she can eat with no problems, so am a lot happier now.
-
Glad you have found some suitable food and I will be thinking of you both on Saturday
-
Thanks - I have been overreacting as usual and not sleeping well as a result. Am sure I am just imagining things, but her breathing seems different from the other cats, and I Think she is losing some weight on her back legs, although she is practically 18, so not that surprising really!!
Had a sweet phone call last night, the people who adopted Frankie had seen about her on CC when looking for screens, so rang to see how things were, which was nice.
App is at 10.20 in the morning, then I have to pop in the rescue to tell them what they have said. Still not sure about having the dental done through them, it just depends cos of travelling - we have 3 deadlines in work next week, so I can't go in late at all. I also have an events ceremony to go to on Thurs, so am losing a day then (unless I use my vet)
-
Good Luck for later today with Zia at the vets!
-
Hope things went well at the vets today
-
Thanks everyone - bit of a weird trip really. Journey was a lot longer than I thought, so am pretty sure I am going to work something out to use my own vet - was a good 35-40 min drive, and that was on a SAt with no traffic, wouldn't like to get her there in a morning, nor do 4 trips in one day. i also didn't rate the vet, my vet gave her a better checkover and I only wanted to pop her on the scales!! Will have to see what my vets can do on Mon, but he has given her an ab jab, and 10 days of antirobe, so we have 12 days grace to get the dental done.
-
Sounds as if you'll be happier using your own vet. Don't feel bad about not sleeping well and being on hyper alert because of worry about Zia....know just how you feel. Hope the ab jab really helps
-
Hope the meds work and you can get the dental done at your own vet Des
-
Just waiting to hear from the rescue, but i am going to see what my vets can offer tomorrow anyway.
-
It's such a shame that you do lots for your rescue but dont have faith in their vet..... :( Its a pity you cant get your rescue to pay for the treatment, if not part!!!
Hope the jab gives her some relief! ;)
-
Zia is from a different rescue - although I dont like my rescue's vet either (or one of the ones at my own practice - I am very fussy. I am the same at my docs though, I wont see the male doc, will only see the female ones, would rather wait than see him). I am waiting for a decision from the manager at the moment.
She is still being picky with her food, so giving her the Antirobe tomorrow should be fun.
-
She is going for a dental next Monday - they could have got her in Thurs/Fri this week, but I didn't want to do it so close to the weekend just in case she had issues afterwards. She is having bloods done first, I just hope that her organs are fine, I have never had such an old cat.
-
Sending positive vibes for good test results~~~~~~~~
-
Fingers crossed for the results and :luck: for Monday, will be thinking of you both.
-
Hope the bloods are good and will be thinking of you on Monday. Think I'd do the same about waiting in case there's trouble - best to avoid weekends. Presume you get the blood results before the weekend?
-
Best of luck for Monday Zia and Des
-
Thanks for all the wishes.
SM - she will have the bloods done on Mon before having the dental. IF she has them early, it means I have to starve her twice, which isn't fair. She is very wary of me after the ab last night - I can't risk using food as she is being so picky, so had to go straight down the hatch followed by some treats. She has run away from me this morning, I can't approach her without her running, so the next 9 days are going to be fun.
-
Now for Zia......   Not long now till she gets her dental and bloods done........ ;)
-
Thanks - I do keep thinking the worst with her!! i went to Asda this morning to get her some of the new Select food that she loves, so she has eaten a decent amount today, and will pick up some more a/d on Mon - she is looking thinner on her back end at the moment, and her balance hasn't been good - hoping it is just cos I didn't make the bed when I got up. Dont think she has moved off it this afternoon!!
-
Sending more positive vibes for her at the vets on Monday~~~~~~~
-
Thanks - never had a cat at the age of 18 before!!
-
Fingers crossed everything will go well for Zia on Monday.
Unusual name, Zia. I think it is the Italian word for Aunty, isnt it?
-
Thanks C - I have no idea what her name means, she came with it - her 'sister' was called Gem. She does get Zi or ZiZi most of the time though.
-
Yes best of luck Zia
-
Lots of good wishes for Zia
-
Good vibes being sent to Zia and you.
Found this-
The girl's name Zia \zia\ is pronounced ZEE-ah. It is of Arabic and Latin origin, and its meaning is "light, splendor; grain".
-
Thanks for the good wishes everyone - still struggling to get her a/b's into her, I think everyone else has had a small amount this weekend with pinching her food!! She hates the straight down her throat method though and doesn't like fresh meat, so can't hide it in a piece of sliced meat for her.
-
WEll, it is time to take her food up - why is it when you know they only have till a certain time, that is the night they decide they dont want a lot of tea?? Morning is going to be fun, as the other 4 will want their tea!! I also have to try and get a urine sample from Rosie in the morning as well as dealing with Zi's squeaking - think I will be glad to go to work.
-
Sending good vibes and best wishes to Zia for tomorrow.
-
Good Luck at the vets Zia! ;D ....and Rosie please be helpful with Meowmy in giving up your sample!
-
Thanks - Zi is annoyed at not having her brekkie, and i have had to lock her in the cat room so everyone else can eat - I did starve Molly as well overnight so that Zi could spend the night on the bed.
Rosie decided to only poo overnight - am sure she normally does both!!
-
Good luck, Zia.
-
"Zia" also means "aunt" in Italian.
Hope all goes well for Zia today!
-
Thanks - she has had to have 2 teeth out, but her bloods were fine. I was incredibly relieved. She is currently trying to eat me out of house and home, but i am restricting her food to make sure she doesn't eat too much and be sick - especially as she doesn't like bland foods like chicken, and I have no white fish in. Ironically, I have had 2 cats at the vets since Sat, both looked as though they had lost weight, yet both had put weight on, maybe I am imagining things!!
-
....Or even worse you are growing! :naughty:
So glad that Zia's dental went to plan.....and fab news also that her blood's are fine! Gosh Des an 18yr old with no health issues! :wow:
-
:-)
Thanks, I am amazed!! Well, I think it helped by having Rosie - I generally only have one cat with an illness
-
Glad it all went well ;D
-
Glad the op went well
-
Glad Zia is fine. :)
-
So pleased Zia is well. She deserves some more sardins ;D
-
Glad both ladies are fine afyer their vets visits and now Des off to the Optician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
She is still eating well fortunately, and managed to trick her into eating her ab's in food yesterday, so hopefully can do the same tonight. Think I might need to do that Liz!!
-
Maybe she aint so fussy with her food now her dental work has been done! ;)
Glad its all over now so you can relax on this for now!
-
Can I have some more vibes for Zia please? She has diarrhea, so we are at the vets tonight, I am praying it is nothing serious.
-
Oh no poor little Zia. Loads of positive vibes coming your way Des
-
Thanks.
-
Fingers crossed it's just a blip (to coin that phrase again)
-
sending lots pf healthy vibes for zia desley.
fingers crossed its nothing serious
-
Sending lots of positive vibes for Zia, hope she is better this evening.
-
Vet says she is very gassy, so she has had an ab jab and Vit B jab, with tablets for over the weekend - should be fun. If no better by Mon, back to the vets with her. I already have to go on Mon, feel as though I am living there at the moment!!
-
Bless the little gas bag. Hope she can clear it soon
-
back to the vets with her. I already have to go on Mon, feel as though I am living there at the moment!!

Seriously, my thoughts are with you and your charges
-
Vet offered me a chair, but I said I wanted more than that!! There doesn't seem to be anymore diarrhea, and fortunately I dont have to battle with her for meds till tomorrow evening.
-
Sending positive vibes for Zia's tum to get better....Good Luck! :Luv:
