Title: Madeleine - Siamese cat missing in Chatham area
Post by: Mark on April 24, 2008, 17:46:14 PM
I was on phones today. I had gone to Canterbury to go to some job agencies. I was having some lunch and phoned in. I couldn't make the message out but heard her say "2 Siamese" I called Sharon and she had got the message too. It was handy that I was in Canterbury as Gillian works in a college there so I got a trap from her and took it to the old lady. What had happened is her next door neighbour died in his house on Sunday. The police broke in to get the body but his 2 Siamese cats were outside. We don't  know if the Police let them escape or if the old man had died while the cats were out. The old lady phoned The police, the RSPCA and social services about the cats but none of them wanted to know  >:( - She phoned us in desperation. The cats were last seen this morning - there is a really busy road nearby so we are hoping they get trapped before they are run over or stolen  :'(

I'd be happy to steal them mark!

You'll have to speak to your police and let them know you will always take cats in these circumstances.
It's not always convenient but it doesn't happen that often.

It is a cul-de-sac,. The neighbour that lives in the house facing the cul-de-sac said she always keeps an eye on the old people. The old lady said she didn't know and living alone it made her feel better. She said she had made a friend because of the cats  :Luv2:
The younger woman said that she had seen the old man go to sainsbury's in his boxer shorts twice and last week so she phoned social services as she was worried. They told her to find out who his doctor is and phone him. Then she saw him sitting on his front wall in only socks. She phoned SS again and they said they would "try" to send someone round. They never did and the next thing they knew, he was dead in his hallway. The police had to break in to get the body. She is angry that "The SS" didn't do a thing to help a sick old man  >:(

I felt sorry for the old lady as she said she was scared living alone knowing her neighbour was dead next door. She has never owned a cat and said she had to ask in sainsbury's what the best food for siamese cats was - they gave her Whiskas supermeat  :-:

I checked the phone up until about 11.30 last night just in case they caught one. They have a vet right around the corner but it's a very expensive one we don't use (the one that was sarcastic as we declined a £100 Chlamydia test before moving a cat on to another vet  :tired: )

Has anyone done a "lost" poster for these two.  I would do a leaflet drop in the cul de sac just in case someone has taken them in already or if they are hiding in a neighbours garden.  If they are normally allowed out the neighbours may not be aware they are now homeless as they will be used to seeing them wandering round.

Just an idea.

One of the problems is finding time - it's about 8 miles away + we have no pics. I'm not sure if it's a good idea letting people know there are 2 Siamese cats around for the picking  :scared:

I see your point which is why I thought if you just kept it as a basic "lost" poster in the immediate area at least the neighbours can keep an eye out.

All good ponts but the vets i rang have a few people that live local that will keep and eye out.. Also the lady who rang us seems to be very reliable as she keeps in contact with us.. Not sure about the leaflet drop idea as its not a pleasant area of the city.. If no joy by mid week may take some time off and go and do some calling around... but i need some support from some other volunteers.. Just keeping fingers crossed on thse two..

I have to go to Canterbury Council to get my parking permit on Monday. I can go alone or we can meet there?

If we take step ladder, I could get over the wall but I would want to make sure the women were there in case the police come along  :evillaugh:

We have caught one!! But i am having major trouble finding someone to pick it up as no one drives.. everyone is out and vets are not too keen having it in their care for a day or so.. due to the weekend.. The other puss is around but in the house... so we need to set the other trap asap...

One down..

Hopefull Gillian picks up her phone messages and knows about a cat coming to her this morning...

Oh my why does this always happen at weekends!!

Will phone you Sharon, why didn't you call me?

We are going to Canterbury today. If she can keep the cat today, I can pick it up and drop it off at Gillian's or Caroline's on the way back around 5 or 6pm?

Edit - some other people are doing this  :)

Not yet but I am on call if it gets caught. The poor lady only had the first cat in her house for an hour but she has bad asthma and had to take 3 pills. I know she struggles to breathe as I met her.

The first cat has been ID'd as seal point.

Update.. Puss has a chip.... Her name is Melissa and she is 9yr old ...she was born in USA moved and registered in Spain and then onto the UK.. She is a blue point..

Quite thin on her hunches but eyes, mouth and teeth okay, very subdued at the moment, maybe missing her companion...I am already smitten..!!

Gave her a chin rub and a good stroke and no hissing at all. She hasnt eaten anything yet, so we have left her in peace for a day or so.. Get her and hopefully the other tomorrow... Then i am sure they will be happier..

Oh my i did get the colouring wrong didnt i? Considering i got through to some Yank in USA to confirm her ID chip number i must of written it down wrong.

Four siamese is alot actually... I do think she is missing her companion as she did seems abit depressed... My feeling is that my own two have to come first.. i have never had four cats, 3 has always been my maximum.. But we are assuming these two are related etc it may be that they hate each other....!!!

The other one is light coloured and i just rang the lady to make sure she is okay as she was quite poorly with the cat hairs today.. Her noisy neighbour wanted to ring the RSPCA!!! when they caught her this morning...Which i would of been very mad about as they were ignoring her last week. But rescueing two siamese is something for the limelight.. I do so hope we find the other one soon though.. Melissa want like being on her own i feel.. she needs companionship...

We're all on stand by here, and going out for a scout round this afternoon if no news.  :sneaky: Another neighbour was talking about getting the  :bum: rescue in, and they haven't got a clue about Siamese and at least our Sharon has owned them for years and understands their ways.  :) We really need to get the other one as Melissa will pine for her pal, and vice versa.  :(

Just to say we went out tonight and managed to spot this puss. He's unhurt but thin and extremely nervous. Good that he's nervous as no one is going to get close enough to steal him. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for a proper stake out and trapping, but a neighbour is monitoring and one trap has been left set. At least we know he's still there!  :wow:

Your a star Pinkbear! I am on phones tomorrow so will check the phone first thing. Melissa is okay today very frightened but eating abit now... We have decided to give it a few days before we get her to the vets to be checked out as with luck we may of caught the companion puss cat.... I was told that she was the more nervous one, so in time i think the other will take the bait.. Will also check out the vets to see if they have past history now i know the owners name who died..

I was passing nearby so went to have a look. They said I had just missed 2 women from the council that had been in the house. They said the cat ran out the flap so they have set the flap on "in only" and set the trap in the kitchen. They found cat food in the cupboard so are using that. The are going by at 5pm to check and again in the morning. That's all we know at the moment.

Update on Melissa
Of to the vets this morning (i got very wet).. Melissa is a sweetie and seems in good health.. Although she is underweight 3.2kg should be more 4.0 something...
Her teeth look good.

I am in abit of a quandry.. I would love to give Melissa a chance with my two, she is a very laid back puss cat. I got her chin rubbing me and purring, but she is on her own at the moment in a pen.. Trouble is if her companion is caught and they get on then they will have to be rehomed togehter.. I cannot take on 2 cats with my two already, so if they were a pair it would be out the question. Also i am away on hols end of May and it would mean that family members would have to carry on looking after a new inmate.. Generally my two are set in their ways and Leo will usually come in at night..I doubt Melissa is a true outdoor cat, she is fine being handled and really perked up when she had company... But i cannot split her and her companion us. I could temp foster her but again it would all change if the other one is finally caught.. She seems very laid back and i dont think my Bella would have a problem with her but maybe Leo would.. Although i dont have any spare rooms i do have a small office and my bedroom where she could stay for a few days and introduce slowly.. Our doors are open throughout the day due to access for my cats but i think she is far to nervous to go anywhere. I also have my brothers cats i tortie and one burmese.

Thoughts pls, or am i letting my heart rule my head!

I think I'd try and home them together, I've seen 2 siamese together before and very close and they also like lots and lots of attention don't they? I hope they can be reunited soon esp having lost their owner too.

I think they are an item even if they aren't best friends - it's familiarity. I would wait and see how they react if & when they are reintroduced.
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying
Post by: caledonia on April 29, 2008, 13:24:45 PM
I would tend to agree with Mark. Wait and see how the pair are with each other as that would be only fair.

My two came to me after the death of their owner and had been together all their lvies. They grrom each other, sleep side by side and look out for each other. They adjusted into my house so well, probbaly because they had the comfort of each other. It may well be the case with these two so I would wait and see how they are before deciding to rehome one of them - the other one is probably running very scared and wil hopefully appear very soon.

Even if these two aren't best buddies I think they wuld still have to go as a pair .... like Mark says it's familiarity.

I wouldnt dream of splitting them up..if they are best mates. But the ongoing saga with the other one is taking its time and poor puss in Pen is lonely.. Just spending a few minutes giving her a good brush etc she perked up no end....Got a good purr out of her.. etc.. Sadly we dont have any other pens to take her two that are better at the moment. and all indoor fosterers are full up with needy cases...!

I was about to say the same thing, Sharon. It's blooming horrible outside and puss is bound to be in it's house.  :tired: I think I'll allow myself an extra cuppa seeing as it's my only day off this week.  :evillaugh: I will head down there in an hour or so.

Trouble is, we need access to this house to either trap puss in one room, OR block up points of entry so it can't get back and make it for likely puss will come across our traps. But the nice well meaning lady from the council is no cat catcher!  :evillaugh: She was very helpful at first, but obviously she thought it was going to be a case of scooping up puss and shoving her in a basket. But puss is scared and confused and it's going tp someone determined to do the job. She has let puss slip past her and out the door twice now when she's been in, and it's unpredictable as to when she can go and check up on the house. We've tried to make an appointment with her so we can be there when she arrives but no joy.  :(

All a bit of a stalemate and unless we can liase properly with the council and all work together, this could run and run. And all the time, puss is not getting enough food and may end up wandering off in search of more plentiful supplies. So yes, we are all a bit worried here.  :scared:

Thanks, Mark.

I'm about to leave and will be there around 10am. I'd be awfully glad of a friendly face and perhaps someone to take over for a few minutes while I go off in seach of a loo.  :evillaugh: Don't worry about the ladder though. Even if it was legal, and we could get over without braking our necks, it looks like an amazon jungle in there and you'd be hard pressed to find a full sized panther let alone a cat that doesn't want to be found.

Prob a really stupid quest/statement but if the other cat could smell it's siblng maybe it would be easier to trap, though this wouldn't be possible would it?  what a difficult situation, I am trying to trap a feral (I managed the other 3 kittens but this one I just cannot trap!) so I have every sympathy.

News Flash.

Cat is trapped in the house and the women from the council are there.

I phoned Julie to arrange to meet there. Straight after, Sharon phoned me to say the cat was in the house and the women would only wait 20 minutes. Then I phoned Julie and she had just arrived. The cat is very upset so Julie has a task - Even if I left this second, it would take me 20 minutes so I will hold fire and hope for the best.

Julie is at the house no sign of cat.The council lady who thought puss was easy to pick up is at the hospital due to the large scratch it gave her. Julie has set the trap again, bunged up all escape routes and is going back 3ish this afternoon. I am not sure its a good idea (when and if we trap this one) whether we put her with Melissa she may get into a fight now being seperated for nearly 2wks... and with all the agro going on..

Mark, Julie suggested if you are around later on that two hands are better then one.. But if the council want let us have access then no go for rest of the day..

This puss must be terrified... almost feral like!

Just spoken to Julie,

We are meeting up there at 3pm - lets hope we can get this poor cat.

I've come home for a cuppa before going back to check the trap inside the house. Couldn't see Madeline (puss's name) anywhere and after her colleague got mangled this morning, and had to go to hospital for treatment, the council lady refused to come in and help me look.  I don't care how much they insist Madeline's still in the house, she just plain isn't!  :tired: I over-turned chairs, sofas, beds and a wardrobe looking for her and she would have tried to escape and made a noise for sure.  :sneaky:

It's all getting very silly now. I doubt we will get anymore co-operation from the council after this morning's incident.  :evillaugh: But what I am thinking is that although we don't wish to trap Madeline in the house with no means of getting to her, what we could do is place a trap over the cat flap outside in the rear garden. That way, IF she's in the house, the only way she can get out is via our trap. We would then need to get the our friendly neighbour's son on scene (Mrs Jameson) go climb up and have a look every now and again. Apparantly, Mrs Jameson's son did try to seal the cat flap from the garden side last night, but Madeline shouldered it in again.  :shify: At any rate, they've no way we are going to be able to scoop this puss up. We have to wait til she's so hungry she's no option but to go for the trap. But I hope that her stubborn streak doesn't overrule her head.  :(

I've seen pictures of chocolate point siamese before and they look so sweet and dainty. But this one is behaving like the worst farm Tom cat I've ever had to deal with.  :innocent:

Julie is at the house no sign of cat.The council lady who thought puss was easy to pick up is at the hospital due to the large scratch it gave her. Julie has set the trap again, bunged up all escape routes and is going back 3ish this afternoon. I am not sure its a good idea (when and if we trap this one) whether we put her with Melissa she may get into a fight now being seperated for nearly 2wks... and with all the agro going on..

I thought that Melissa was just caught on the 26th - four days ago? Do you think they were living seperate since the old man died? Maybe possibile that they were coming and going together until Melissa was caught?

Caledonia, I am told a Siamese coat changes from dark to light the more it is exposed to sunlight? I dunno?  :-: But Melissa's coat is still quite dark and Madeline's coat is white. The evidence is that Melissa is quite happy being indoors and Madeline wants to be on the tiles. I would think if I'm right they probably aren't that fussed about each other. At any rate, we don't believe they are related.  :sneaky: We got the call about them over a week ago now and the man had died a couple of days before that, so these 2 have more or less been fending for themselves all this time, and probably been quite independant from each other.  :'(

Wish us luck. Off for another go very shortly!  :tired: :evillaugh:

I think the cats were out when the man died. the police then came along and knocked the door down.. That was over 10 days ago, we caught Melissa on the 26th yes thats right, but the other one is the younger and supposely less timid of the two.. They didnt hang around together Melissa being indoor puss and the other one more outside..Thats all we know.. We also dont want to risk Melissa with a cat that could of been doing the rounds for a while, so the plan would be to get her check out at the vets and then introduce her.. But its all ifs and buts... Maybe she will calm down when she realises she is safe. But as Julie says i doubt we are going to get much help from the council now on.

Wow I have never heard that about their coats - thats amazing. My wee man was a Balinese (long haired Siamese) and was an indoor cat and was nearly white but then he was a lilac point whcih are lighter anyway but I had no idea that their fur changed based on their exposure to sunlight - I thought it was just based on their pointage - seal points being darker! Learn something new every day as they say!

I hope Madeline turns up soon and doesn't get too distressed. How on earth did the woman end up with a scratch? Maybe I read wrong but it sounds as if the cat was all 'trapped up' and now she isn't and the lady is injured. I also work for the local housing department I think I would have been leaving this job to the proffessionals - you guys!  ;D

No Luck.

Julie was already there with a council woman when I arrived. They said they can't kep coming to let us in and check - also Serco will need to get in the house soon to gut it. Apparently, the flap is now sealed but only with gaffrer tape so Julie said a determined cat will get in. The old man 2 doors away has been feeding them as well. Julie suggested putting a trap in his garden but he has his own cat and he said all the local cats feed in his garden so he didn'r want then getting trapped. Anyway the neighbour round the corner loaned us a stepladder to get over the side wall. I have set another trap by the back door - Julie set one by the front door. It was a fiasco as the ladder tipped over and I was a wuss. The woman's son who is about 15 scaled it easily to get the ladder back  :-[

Anyway. Not sure what is happening now.

Whitehall Farce is the term that comes to mind1

The good thing is we've got a very helpful lady and her son (who rescued the ladder) who will monitor both traps and refresh the baits regularly. She isn't an animal lover but knew the man and feels so sorry about how his life ended. She said the cats were all the family he had and she'd like to see them save and being looked after. With one trap next to the cat flap in the garden, and another next to the front door, there is little else we can do but wait.  :shy:

They are such a nice family. Really well brought up kids  - quite a shock when all you see is chavs & pikeys now  :evillaugh:
The younger son said he wanted to rescue cats when he gets older  :) - he was really getting into it  :evillaugh: "shall I pass the trap over to you" etc
The older son said he will check the trap regularly for us - he said his mum made him check it when football was on  :evillaugh: - The younger son said "and it was Man U - 1 nil" (or something - I don't understand football talk  :evillaugh:)

The woman from the council told Sharon that she still thinks the cat is in the house. Julie searched the house from top to bottom yesterday
(well it's a bungalow  :evillaugh: ) and there is no sign. Sharon has asked them to unseal the catflap "just to be sure"

We don't know what to do as we can't keep driving 8 miles for nothing. The neighbours are checking the traps.

The council lady called me twice today while I was driving the bus. Of course, I couldn't respond but asked Sharon to call them while I was on break.

The lady that got scratched seems to be getting obsessed and is convinced puss is still in the house, but I searched it twice and never heard so much as a rustle. It was really grotty in there too. A bit like a Life of Grime house.  Thank goodness I remembered to put some gauntlets on - they went straight in the wash!  :evillaugh:

I figured they wouldn't tell if I'd moved anything so I had a good root around and I even shifted the wardrobe and sofas out. The only thing I couldn't shift properly was the bed because it was wedged, but I did lift it up and had a good look. There's no way a live puss wouldn't have moved swith all that racket going on...  :tired:

I got through to the council and asked the to unlock the flap and allow access. As it was getting silly and no way we can trap a cat in the house, we will keep on trying to catch it outside.. However, the weekend is nearly upon us so i doubt much will happen as people will be out and about.. I didnt manage to speak to Mrs James to see if she had seen puss cat.

In the meantime i am now thinking of giving Melissa a go with my two.. All reports from neighbours seem to say that these two were not particularly together alot.. The longer we "hang" on poor Melissa is getting lonely in her pen...

So a dilemna.. See if i can introduce Melissa to my two (or foster her for the time being)
Or wait until we find the other one and see the reaction when they are together again?

Thoughts pls

Fingers crossed you trap her soon.  Mind you if she is anything like Rossi she will be able to hide in the house and no amount of lifting and shifting will bring her out of hiding.  I remember spending over two hours one night looking for her in my 6 small room house ... I turned the place upside down and I don't have much clutter and all the time the little B :censored:h was hiding in the airing cupboard on the top shelf right next to the tank just watching me    and she knew me ... if I had been a stranger she would NEVER have let me see her.

Good point Sam - the amount of times I have 'lost' cats in the house is unbelievable - happened twice this week actually. Has anyone checked inside wardrobes, I have had cats get in there and the door has shut so they have been stuck in there, sometimes hiding in things in the wardrobe just to make themselves harder to find - and despite knowing me, they never let on where they are.

sofie used to specialise in hiding in the kitchen cupboards, fail to respond to calls and stay still when the doors opened so I did not spot her. Frequently only found her after she had shattered her latest pile of crockery trying to be stealthy! :shify:
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on May 01, 2008, 20:43:13 PM
Update.. Julie is on site now.. No one has seen the cat outside for the last day.. Which brings us to suspecting she is inside.. The cat flap has been opened but the door to the kitchen to the cat flap has been closed.. Hence cat cannot get out.. Puss therefore has no access to food or water (although there may be a bathroom sink for water maybe).. We are very worried. Council dont consider it an emergency so want come out. We are ringing them in the morning to demand they go out and open the doors. We then have to see if we can trap her outside, although her condition would of got worse by then i suspect. Julie is an expert at these things and she is worried as well now..I called the council this afternoon and they promised they were going out to see the house..

We have one scared puss cat on our hands now!

Post by: Sam (Fussy_Furball) on May 01, 2008, 21:00:23 PM
She might be a scared puss but she isn't a foolish one .... I would suggest going into the house and quietly try calling her - just as if you were calling to your own kitties at home -  then open a can of something really tasty (sardines in tomato sauce) and sit and wait.  If she thinks the coast is clear there is a good chance she will come out of hiding ... of course it all depends on how long you can afford to hang around.

If this kitty is used to living with an old man who quite obviously didn't have alot of visitors or strangers in the house she will be one very nervy cat if there are lots of people in HER home .  I speak from experience my furbabes are happy contented furries when it's just me in the house but if I have a friend round they are all very suspicious and sculk off upstairs the minute they knock on the door.

Keeping everything crossed for you and her.

Thats what we think but Melissa isnt at all like that.. Perhaps she is just older and wiser. The trouble is we cannot get access to the house without the council being around and they are not willing for us to be their on our own for long.. i.e they just cannot give us the key and let us get on with it.. They also want to clean the house out for next tennants asap.. !

Sam, you have to think in terms of it looking like a squat. The floor is covered in rubbish, broken glass, stinking tins of month-old opened beans. This poor man had totally disintegrated as a human being before he died. Yes, I had all cupboards and wardrobes open. I pulled all the bedclothes off the bed. Looked underneath the sofa cusions. Absolutely everywhere I could think a cat might hide and absolutely everywhere you could fit a cat into.  :tired: After that, we set a trap with fresh food in the living room and left the house in silence for 4 hours. We asked the council lady to return and let us back in later that day and the trap was untouched.

I am totally stumped! Somehow puss has to be in the house because no one has seen it for over 24 hours, and ever since the man died it has been seen everyday by neighbours. And I know none of you believe it because I don't believe it myself. This cat has got a Tardis!  :shify:
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on May 01, 2008, 23:42:24 PM
I agree with Sam that this cat is still in the house most likely and while people are there, food or no food , she isnt gonna come out.

She knows the house better than you and I bet she knows somewhere that you think a cat couldnt get into, She is so terrified by the loss of her owner and allthe strange goings on in the house she is staying firmly hidden probably until its dark.

Like Des and Sam I have searched mmy house high and low for Kocka and one time she had got under a cupboard that is barely 3 inches from the ground and I saw her by accident after beliving I had looked everywhere. I had closed off every door after I had searched the room and knew she was in the house cos had shut the flap and seen her inside.

I also know that Sasa has a hideaway that I cant find at the moment, and its driving me crazy where she is going and I know its in the house cos tonight she turned up the house side of me in the utility room and didnt come pass me from the kitchen and the cat flap. Cant think where she is hiding though!

Flipping council, I know they cant trust everyone but I would have thought to let you have the keys over the weekend as you are CP , shouldnt be too big a problem cos you are trying to help them.

Just a thought - there isn't something like a cellar that she could have got into and unable to get back out of is there? Or access to an attic? Or loose floorboards? IT is so much harder when you dont know the house or which room she could be in - I much prefer to 'lose' my cats when I know there is only one room they can be in.

There won't be a Cellar - they are small 1950's local authority bungalows - I guess it's possible there is a loft but accessed though a hatch.

There is a thread somewhere else about legislation that requires authorities to attend to the needs of the animals of people who are renting from them or something along those lines, perhaps you could invoke that one ...

I think the council are trying to help -  they came again this morning so that makes it about the 5th visit. I supose you can call that reasonable. Strictly speaking, the tenancy has ended with death to put it bluntly. The council want to get the place ready for the next tenant on their waiting list.

Anyway, I missed a call this morning when I was hoovering  :shy:
When I called back, Margaret, our coordinator had phoned. When I called her back, she said the problem had been sorted. The lady from the council had decided to set one of the traps in the house this morning and plans on going back at 5pm to check. She wasn't sure how to set it so went to the vet just around the corner from the house. The vet said she will show them for £10  >:( - In the end, Sharon explained how to do it over the phone.

This is the same vet that a couple of months ago, when a woman wanted us to take a "stray" in with a bad eye but had no transport, allowed her to drop it off. She (the vet) then offered to do a Chlamydia test for £100 which we declined as I was taking the cat to our regular vet later that day. When I collected him, she was really sarcastic about it. Our regular vet put him on antibiotics and it was clear in a couple of days.

I said to Sharon, the vet is a fool to herself as this could become a nice story for the local paper and the vet could have got some good publicity from it but she is just a moneygrabber  >:( -
It is obvious that a civil servant wouldn't be able to pay £10 without it going to a commitee and half a dozen triplicate forms filled in first.  :evillaugh:

I'm sure she is still being spotted outside - I haven't heard anything for a while a neighbours were out when I took food yesterday. It doesn't help that none of us are that close - Me 8 Miles, Sharon a bit more and Julie 20 miles or so. Margaret is handling it now and ready to run if there is any news. The lady called this morning and said the council are now clearing the house out and thinks it's best we collect the traps. The house will be worked on until someone else moves in - she has been very helpful. She said she has managed to catch 2 hedgies so far but no cat  :-:. She said the man 2 doors away said he is feeding the cat. She has asked him not to as she said the cat won't go in a trap for food as long as he is feeding it. He refuses to stop. A couple of weeks ago, Julie asked him if we can put a trap in his garden but he refused, saying other cats feed in his garden and he doesn't want them getting caught in it  :tired:
Anyway, he has told the neighbour that "maybe the new tenants will take the other cat in"  :tired:

We are at a dead end. I am collecting the traps tomorrow - unless there are any other ideas but this man 2 doors away is making it impossible for us.

The cat was sighted a few days ago but the neighbour said there is a possibility it was in a piece of furniture that was taken away  :(

As it happens, Mark, I'll be less than 2 mins away this afternoon so I can save you the trip. I'll call you later anyway.  ;)

I think the only hope left is for a stake out, and actually watch to traps, so we need a nice but slightly overcast evening and I will go do some secret squirrel stuff.  :shify:

Well, I have just come back from the site. I'm afraid there's been no sign of puss for a while now. The house/bungalow is now completely stripped and they are finishing the redecorations. I expect it will be re-occupied in a matter of a few days now. I can't see puss returning and there's not much motivation for her to stay around now.  :'(

Thankfully, I managed to rescue our traps as they were about to be chucked on the skip.  :tired:

I will try a stake out one evening when the weather gets better, but my hopes are now on puss being befriended by someone else in the area and them taking her to a vet. We really have tried evening else.

I had a brief chat with the lady whose husband has been feeding Madeline after she called me this morning. She says Madeline comes round at 7am every morning and her husband has slowly managed to befriend her. She feels confident that he can put her in a basket for us now.  :wow:

I've heard nothing from Sharon yet so don't know what the plan is, but again we have no room so Madeline might have to hold on a few days more.  :(

The lady left a message on my phone. I am in contact with Rae (well left a message) and maybe siamese rescue as there is no hope of a space being available for her for weeks and weeks it took us 3 wks to get the last lot of cats in our care via the vets..

He condition is abit mangy but other then that hard to tell...

Hi all

How wonderful that Madeline has been found.  I have just spoken to Sharon and once I have had a word with Hubbie this eve (to TELL him that we are getting another kitty) all being well I would be thrilled to reunite her with her long lost friend.

There will obviously be some planning required which I will speak to Sharon in depth about so lets all keep everything crossed that Madeline doesnt do another runner and dissapear.

I have taken the first step already and asked Melissa (Missa) and she is very happy and exited about it, although the issue of bunk wigwams will need discussing   . ;D

I think that's absolutely brilliant and so good of you to want to try. And tell Hubby if he says yes, he get's lifetime membership of the Crazy Cat Person's Club.  :blow kiss: Obviously, you need to spend a bit of time thinking and planning the reunion. Madeline has been missing a long time.  :(

It does seem like a happy ending waiting to be executed here, so whatever I can do, Sharon, just ask - as you know, I'm off work to 2 weeks so can run around a bit.  ;)

I'm off to start getting the drinks in. I smell a party in the air!  :wow:

At the moment we just dont have any where to put Madeline after she is caught. She needs to go to the vets and ideally have a place for a few days to settle before Rae can visit and pick her up, but we dont even have the luxury of that...Yesterday we changed our phone message to say we cannot help at the moment until our small crisis is over, i got several people over the weekend ring about kittens but no one can take any at the moment.. One of the Kingstone sisters (Hera) goes today but that leaves 2 more and a mum and kitten home fell through yesterday due to ill health. So we have four cats with fosterers at the moment with no where to move them too when they go away... Yesterday i rang HQ who are trying to help but they have over 200 cats on their adoption centre waiting list...

Unless movement we just are not able to move forward on Maddie at the moment.

This is so sad.  I know that not all cats that come into rescue come in because of abuse, or neglect or a bad situation but it makes me mad to think that in some cases because of irresponsible people and massive kitten booms, nothing can be done at the moment to help Maddie and Melissa be reunited and it is very sad.

I know that it would be a fantastic and perfect ending if the two ladies could be back together and I feel very helpless and useless here being so far away.  I know that Maddie may need to settle somewhere to be assessed before coming here but if a vets could look at her and keep her for a couple of days I would be more than willing to travel down and collect from there.

If there is anything that I can do to help please let me know.  I would suggest collecting her direct from the man who is feeding her and I could get her to a vets here but if there is anything wrong and she couldnt be put with other cats I would be a bit stuck.

Sorry folks, Im just trying to think of ways around the situation.  I know everyone woul dlove to see a happy ending and I sincerely appreciate everything that is being done. :Luv2:

can anyone from siameserescue get involved and help? (if they aren't already?) they seme to have a wide entowkr of people around the country, perhaps one could foster temporarily, especially if they know she has a home to go to?  and if something is wrong and she can;t live with another cat then SR could try to rehome her as a single?

(sorry if this sounds like words from the inexperienced/ignorant!) :)
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying

It's certainly frustrating.  :'(

We could get her into a vet pen, but given that she's been outside for months now and had got herself into a routine of sorts, the stress of being cooped up indefinately might do more damage than good.  :(

I am sure Sharon is doing her best and thinking of all possible solutions, but we need a local fosterer to fill the gap between immediate vet assessment and stabilisation and Maddie being fit for travel to Rae.  :scared:

It's possible but as Rae is happy to take her, I think that's what we should be aiming for. I took a Siamese to Siamese rescue a few weeks ago (FCoV girl) and it was over 100 miles round trip. She has survived this long outside so another week or 2 in the warm weather shouldn't do to much harm. She knows the area and she is being fed - there is an old man that feeds all the local cats and he is around all the time so hopefully it will all work out well  :).

well I am  more than happy to take care of her. I have experience with siamese and a spare room, as I am sure I have mentioned before. She would have privacy and peace and plenty of hideyholes if she felt the need and good company when she wanted it. It so happens I am working from home tomorrow morning so can prepare a space for her if you are interested.

Wouldnt it be easier all round if she went straight to Rae ?
Surely it would be more stressfull for her to stay at the vets or a fosters when she is going to end up with Rae anyway ? She could then see a vet at Rae's end

That would seem the most sensible arrangement if Rae is willing to do that, but my offer still stands if Sharon decides she needs an intermediate foster.

Obviously stage 1 is to get Maddie seen by our vets and given the all clear. I wouldn't be surprised if she needs to go on some special diet and maybe even meds. After that, transport would be the big issue here, BC., but I will make some enquiries and see what can be done and if our vets think Maddie might be up to a journey to Chatham just yet.

Many thanks for the offer. Always helps to have as many strings to our bows as we can find.

diet and meds are not a problem PB, I used to work as a vet assistant so have the necessary skills for administering tablets and needles if required. I would hate for her to go missing again, simply because of delays trapping her while working out the mechanics of the process. This little girl needs a proper roof over her head ...  :Luv:

There is a train service between here and Canterbury so if necessary I can just stay on the train to collect her and bring her home ...

Just checked the forecast, and the weather is going downhill for the rest of the week with heavy rain and dropping temperatures - it is important to get her inside if she is run down as it seems she is ... Siamese go down very rapidly without love and affection when they are ill

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on August 06, 2008, 19:16:04 PM
Yes the forcast is not good at all and if there is a chance for her to be in a home asap that will be great. Canterbury have said that they have no places available at present so bc s offer sounds a great one to get this little girl into foster care. She must be so stressed by now living on her wits and outdoors, her health must be going down hill cos siamese are soooooo sensitive.

I am sure that Rae would be delighted if Maddie can be brought inside and cared for by an experienced cat owner, until she can go to her new home.

Thanks everybody for you help and Black cats offer.. I wil speak to the welfare people tomorrow. Although  it would probably be less stressful for Maddie to go straight to Rae CP wise and in lieu of her having Melissa i cannot in good faith do that. We have to get her checked out at the vet before hand.. I have no idea of her condition etc..i was told she was very "mangy" probably a few flea and proably not having a good diet.. She must therefore be checked out at a vet this way before we move forward... it wouldnt be fair on Melissa or would it be very sensible although probably the easiest thing to do..

If welfare people where okay, we could set the balls in motion and BC assistance with being the inbetween person would help as we wouldnt have to wait for a pen to be available.. I have pushed favours with vets to the limit and if Maddie is find to be moved i dont think they will keep her in their care any longer then that...

So i am on the case peopel, but am absolutely overwhelmed with problems this end.. So i am doing the best I can for Maddie...

Thanks though for your ideasl

Sharon if it is a matter of finances I can underwrite the veterinary expenses. I really can not bear the thought of her being out in bad weather, especially if you are having the storm that is rolling around here at present. Get her into the vets and into PBs car and up here if you can - it is only a 45 minute run up the M2 against the traffic ....
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on August 06, 2008, 22:36:12 PM
Hi BC.. its not really about the expenses .. its sadly about space, fosterers, having more cats in our care then we are able to cope with.., logicistic, trapping (it may take some time) vets and volunteers.. All over comeable but all take organising...but at least we have a way forward...

But we do need to get her to a vets before we move her on.. Not doing so would be irresponsible and i am sure Rae would agree that we need to take account of Melissa..

I will be on the case tomorrow..

I am sure we can get this sorted one way or another, BC.  ;)

Phone calls will have to be made in the morning and we also need to get in contact with the lady who's been feeding her as well. But if you're prepared to be a bit flexible about exactly when you take delivery of Maddie that would help. Until we get her to our vet, we don't know if it's a case of her having to stay as an inpatient for a day or so, then on to you, or if she'll be released immediately with meds.

You'll have a shock when you see my car though - you'll probably spot it from about Sittingbourne!
Title: Re: 2 Siamese on the street due to owner dying
Post by: blackcat on August 06, 2008, 22:42:29 PM
Yes, I appreciate she needs to go to the vet Sharon, that is why I have offered to underwrite the expenses. I am little unclear as to what else needs to be sorted at the vet end of things.
As you say, trapping will take time and it will take considerably longer if she goes to ground when the weather closes it.

Fosterers having full pens is not an issue as you have my offer to foster her and you will be aware from my experience with Misty that I am good at settling down a distressed cat.

At this stage I really fail to see what else needs organising at this point apart from getting out there and trapping her. So please try to stay focussed on the primary priority, which is getting her into safe hands and well cared for as soon as possible. Sorry if I sound sharp, but there does seem to be a lot of Pfaffing round going on here ...

BC, I suspect part of the problem is the fact that poor Sharon doesn't just have this one cat to sort out, so it isn't just as simple as find someone to trap and get her to you, she has to try and juggle everything else as well.
Title: Re: Melissa - Siamese cat now found
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on August 07, 2008, 08:29:00 AM
I don't know much about everyone else... But although rescue seems simple it hardly ever is... I am not the co ordinator of our branch or indeed am i wth the welfare person.. I am rehoming and I just cannot go off and do my own thing without first making sure that there are not other plans in the pipeline..

I love Siamese cats.. and i don't like the idea Maddie being out there longer then she has two, but equally i have a mum and three kittens, 3 strays who are abit worse for wear but still alive, , two urgent health problem rehoming cats, one cat dumped again after the home fell through and if i dont see anyother kitten for the next two months i will be happy...All these cats are in emergency pens and need to be moved, or equally outside under hedges waiting for us to do something to help them.

I am trying folks... maybe not hard enough sometimes.. but i do my best.!

BC, I suspect part of the problem is the fact that poor Sharon doesn't just have this one cat to sort out, so it isn't just as simple as find someone to trap and get her to you, she has to try and juggle everything else as well.

Desley, it is charitable of you to take that view, but this is an all too familiar pattern that is emerging here - Sharon will turn herself inside out rather than accept an offer of help from me. As for trapping, if you read further down the thread, the person feeding her is quite confident they can pick her up and put her in a carry case, so that is not actually an issue. The only outstanding issue is transport, as far as I can see, and since PB is frequently dashing off to all parts of the country on rescue missions, I find it hard to understand why she would consider a quick trip up the M2 a major obstacle. There is more going on here than meets the eye.

Oddly enough, I do have a quite sound insight into the challenges of rescue, but this one is either incredibly badly run (in terms of administrative coordination) or is playing power games ... I have yet to get a straight answer from Sharon and PB's comment about it being late at night does not really have any relevance, because while it was late at night when she posted, my offer was made during business hours - at least a vet's business hours. A quick phone call to the cat's carers to arrange capture, and a quick phone call to the vet are not a major undertaking, no matter how busy one is ...

and this latest list of obstacles is not helping my blood pressure - Sharon plays the 'poor little me' card way too hard at times ...

Sorry to be so blunt, but there is a history here of obstruction and avoidance, and I am not in the mood to take it much longer ...
Title: Re: Melissa - Siamese cat now found
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on August 07, 2008, 08:36:33 AM
There wasn't any charitable intent, but if her week has been anything like ours, we have had calls about 21 kittens and 1 adult, plus 11 unneutered females who people are happy to keep and that was just in 3 days. Try and work out who is priority there!! If you are unhappy with them not taking you up on offers, why keep doing it? While your offer may have been posted in business hours, they might not have read it in time to speak to anyone, I dont always read messages during the day.
Title: Re: Melissa - Siamese cat now found
Post by: blackcat on August 07, 2008, 08:59:49 AM
Why do I keep offering? Because I tend to put animal welfare ahead of ego. You have pointed out on another thread that it is sometimes necessary to make many offers before one is accepted - that is why I continue to make offers.
My message was read, and responded to within vet hours.
Sharon is not the person who would be doing any of this as Maddie is in Canterbury if I follow this thread correctly.
I have to assume the welfare person, whoever that is, can be contacted with moderate ease, and I do not understand why, when a solution is available, the only communication we seem to be getting is more and more lists of obstacles. It seems an odd way of going about things. That is all.

Not counting the time I set aside for sleep, in the six hours since you placed your offer BC, we have now worked out all the details. All we were waiting for was 9am and the  :censored: vets to open!! We need access to Maddie's vet records to check when her boasters were due. We also need to find one willing to drop everything and see her at short notice.

We had/have every intention of taking you up on your offer, BC. In fact most of last night was spent comfirming with other folks their part in the logisitics. I have actually planned the journey and the car is ready.

Why is it folks cannot let us draw breath?  :sigh:

Thank you PB. I guess the reason is that the information is lost in a pile of superfluous information about everything that needs to be done. A more communicative approach would probably be something a long the lines of 'great, we have put the wheels in motion and are contacting x and y and we should have an update on progress in the morning - it would save us all a lot of stress and angst, I have to say.

As to flexibility re delivery, I am working from home this morning but will be leaving at 1 for a meeting which finishes at 4 so can be home by 4:30. I have a meeting this evening but can blow it off (even though it is important one) if necessary. Tomorrow I am working up in London so the degree of flex is limited due to travelling times, but will PM you my mobile number so you can txt me.

Weekend I am completely at your disposal.

Looking forward to meeting this lovely girl  :Luv:

And while I can completely understand the need to let off steam at times (I have just given a prime example of that) maybe in future we can agree to preface any such post with a statement that this is what we are doing, it will save all our blood pressure from boiling over

Thanks, BC, I got your text.  :)

I have to be out the rest of this morning on other puddy tat matters, but if vets are okay and various welfare people agree to our plan, we will drop off a few baskets to the feeder later and they can chose the one they think is best.

From what I recall from the very brief chat I had with the feeder, Maddie only comes around very early in the morning so it could well be over the weekend that we nab her. We will keep everyone informed of progress.

Hi everyone

Sorry, Im a little delayed in responding, have had a sickly 11 year old baby here (real life child type, not puddy and have had 2 days and nights of )

Anyway I would  just like to add that I am so so appreciative of everything that everyone is doing to help with Maddie and getting her with Missa.

I did originally offer to collect her direct from the man feeding her and get her to the vets, as I thought it may save everyone else dashing madly about as I know a lot of teh rescues are snowed under, but take fully on board that she must be seen by a vet and given a few days to settle before coming here as did Melissa.  However I have prept and primed hubbie and he knows he may be in for another 8 hr round trip.  It was easy I bribed him with permission to fish every weekend for the next 6 weeks!! :evillaugh:

Anyway I know this is a day by day situation and will have to be taken as it comes, and I fully comprehend that everyone has Madeline (called mandolin by my sicky daughter!) welfare first and foremost and as made the point earlier on this thread it would not be fair on anyone if Maddie came straight here on such a long trip and was unable to be housed with Missa for whatever reason.

The only "isolation" I have is an outdoor area that I used to house the ducks in and although it would be suitable I would hate to think of her outside at all, and only yards from her life companion :(

I hope that no one thinks of me as being impatient I really dont want that- I was just so exited when I heard of Maddie being found.  Sorry all.

xxxx

Well, we are all fit and ready this end as far as I can work out.  ;)

One of our volunteers will be dropping off a basket to Maddie's feeder later today. She also also collect Maddie (once caught!) and take her to our vet for a good check over. Once she's been declared fit to travel to Chatham, I will take her to BC.

I think it best if Maddie gets a couple of days with BC to settle down, during which time BC can assess her general health and behaviour in more depth. It'll also cut a big chunk off her final journey to rejoin her old mucker Melissa.

So we are all on standby and just waiting for Madeline to play ball...  :shify:

Well knock me over with a feather. Thanks to some fantastic team work we have Maddie and she is now on her way to the vets..

Allthough i do realise that sometimes it seems we spend ages talking about things and not actually doing, believe you me things do happen.. and i do indeed try my best.. as does everyone

Julie with be in touch with BC and then Rae can then organise a time and day for a happy reunion. Although of course this all depends on what the vet says..

Mods or Mark can you pls change this thread title pls as Melissa was the other siamese.

BTW as if to prove that its a juggling act emotially and physically and although i dearly want to help  every cat, yesterday i had two calls from vets. A possible FIV/FELV pos cat that just came into our vets for neutering...(results have been send away for second opinion) and a poorly senior girl that may end up being PTS due to major health issues, if we cannot find out whats up with her.

I am glad she has been caught, and I do hope she doesn't need any major treatment so she can soon be on her way to be reunited.
Sharon, we know you do everything possible to help as many cats as possible. Fingers crossed for the ones at the vets.

UPDATE!
I've just got back from Bournes and Madelin is going to be looked after there today until Julie picks her up.
And I think thats it really. Not the noisy siamese I was expecting, she did complain a bit and hid under the blanket in her basket, and very wriggly while the vet was looking at her but she's great. In pretty good nick after 4 months on her own. Had her boosters, is now chipped and deflead anf wormed and waiting for the next stage of her journey

I was actually going to suggest it would be nice, once Maddie is settled, for Rae to get some pictures of the two of them together and we could send them to the couple and the other nearby residents. Well Maddie has arrived safely and is settling into her room in her own time. She very kindly vacated the carry box after we left her to it so PB has been able to take it back to Canterbury with it (along with a spare one I have had hanging around for a while).

Maddie ignored the three nice comfy 'caves' I had established for her around the room at various heights and has taken herself under a set of shelves on wheels where she has retreated to the furthest possible extent without moving next door, but she seems remarkably calm given the upheavals of the last 12 hours. We have worming meds for her to take in a week's time as well as he relevant certificates and records so, Rae, you will have full records for your vet (well done PB!).

We don't know how old she is but she seems quite a young cat from what I can see. Petite, and dainty without seeming unduly scrawny. Her coat is in good condition, albeit a little darker than last time PB saw her. She is in short  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Fortunately my gang are not aware of her presence so am presently being harrassed by Smidgen for his dinner (which the dog ate in the excitement) so am off now to feed him.

Well done PB and all concerned on getting this wee girl home and in a position to meet her old friend. And Rae, about an hour's shorter journey  :wow: so wins all around!!!

Photos will have to wait a few days until she is more comfortable with me - sorry guys ...

I would have put her as a seal point, actually, but then have only seen her at the back of the carry box and at the back of the space under the shelves, so prepared to be contradicted. She is very pretty from what I can see ... :Luv:

she is holding it together remarkably well, but the lack of noise from the spare room shows she is keeping her head below the parapet until she works things out. I popped in about an hour ago and she had moved from under the shelves to the ikea tent on the coffee table in the corner. She had also apparently had a good look around as she left footprints (but nothing else) in the litter box. I am leaving her to herself tonight so that she can get familiar with her space and get to know the smells and hiding options. But will pop in before bed and spend some time with her tomorrow with a good book, so I can settle down for a while. If she wants she can come out and check me out. If she doesn't then I will leave her in peace and have another go in the afternoon. She has food, drink and lots of little hideyholes, so should at least feel secure. The rest of the menagerie is downstairs with me, so do not appear to have found her yet  :evillaugh: They will get a nasty shock when the spare room starts yowling!

I've eaten my dinner like a good girl so I'm allowed to post now.  :evillaugh:

Maddie was absolutely brilliant on the journey. Not a peep out of her.  :) I think she's a bit shell shocked but otherwise remarkably good condition for being 4 months as a stray. Infact I suspect she may have sort of moved in somewhere nearby as she doesn't look stray at all.  :shify:

A big, big thanks must also go to Angela (Pudding) who got out of bed and on scene by 7.30am this morning - there's dedication for you!  :wow:

It was lovely to meet BC and the gorgeous Shadow and handsome fella Smidgen.  :naughty: Esther deemed to find me not as interesting as rooting around the bushes in the garden..

I's that time of year, PB. Esther is hunting autumn leaves - nasty things that they are! She is incredibly brave and drags them all unwilling into the house. Thanks so much and it was so good to meet you too. Hope you were happy with the accommodation for her maj! I think I can hear her moving about a little more confidently now, but wil let her get on with it with minimal interference.

Pudding, I didn't read down the posts before, good to have a new member on Purrs as well as someone keen enough to get up with the sparrows to help get this girl into safety - thanks for you help and well done all of you down there, especially PB - I hope the drive home was not too arduous.

Well, have just popped my head in the door and her ladyship is sleeping in the ikea tent, but in a relaxed pose, relatively stretched out. I suspect she is exhausted poor dear :Luv: As I suspected, she has had a good scratch around in the litter tray, checking it out, and even seems to have managed to scoff a light supper. Off to bed now and we will see what new adventures she has tomorrow! My lot know something is up and Esther has been particularly skittish and affectionate. Hope she isn't worried she will be turfed out on her ear (as if!).

Dog and I am off up the stairs to dream land, and to turf Smidgen off the dog's bed ...

Evening all!-

I want to say an HUGE HUGE thank you to all of you that made all of this possible.  I have spoken to Sharon and have emailed BC with my number etc so I will be sorting out everything over the next few days all being well.

I really cant express my gratitude and appreciation, in fact for a normally unemotional type of person Im am choked to say the least.  The effort that you have all put in to get Maddie sorted out is humbling and I for one am in debt to everyone involved.

I promise that as soon as Maddie and Missa are reunited pictures will be posted, champagne opened and balloons released.

Thanks so much for the pictures too, I tried showing Missa but she seemed more impressed with the lobster that was left over from dinner (we are not posh, it was from the fish market- 2 for £16 :)

Anyway I am off to sort out her ladyship as I cunningly hid her wormer in the lobster tail and want to make sure that it has staying in her tummy and is not under the table .

I will post soon and once again T H A N K Y O U :thankyou: :Party 3: :birthday 1: :yesss: :birth: :pic: :Flowers: :blow kiss: :wish:

popped in once more this morning and she is still in the cat tent, awake, and fairly relaxed, but not coming out in any hurry. It was only a brief visit on my part to make sure she was comfy and had food/clean litter, so will now have a cup of tea, and my usually breakfast relax (long breakfasts on the weekends) and wander up later when I am feeling a little more awake.

First I have to untangle her from the bedding she has climbed into   She has thoroughly hidden under the blanket in the tent and while I can see her rump if I rummage, I also get a distinctly siamese moan to say 'go away, stop bothering me'. She seems to be catching up on lost sleep at present, but has had a couple of explores in her room and a verbal exchange with Smidgen through the door. Quite friendly, BTW  :Luv:

Not much food disappearing, to the dog's delight (he gets the scraps), but she will be still feeling a little shell-shocked so that is not surprising.

I know when Zephyr was AWOL for 10 days the first two days he was back home he slept like the dead.

yep, she's still there, but seems not to object too much to being touched. Her muscles are tense under her skin but she doesn't flinch, so I am guessing she just needs a very little more time. She gave me the 'look' when I lifted the blanket to look at her face, but otherwise remained still. Her eyes currently look deep  purple, but that is the result of me seeing blue eyes in light filtered through the side of a red tent  She has a really pretty face - not extreme like so many of them are these days.  :Luv:

I sit on the floor in the room reading, with shadow flopping sighing and whimpering outside the door (why are you where I can't reach you) and she seems quite happy.

Madeleine has spent much of the day in the tent but is now out and about. She has had a few minutes sitting on my lap being stroked - no problems, but not particularly enjoying it either - and is presently sitting on the windowsill of the spare room wondering how the view changed so much since last time she was inside a house.

She is not at all nervous, but is very tense (does that make sense to you?). Basically, no flinching or response to sudden noises (I have new neighbours moving in next door and not too quietly either  >:( ) but walks belly down and around the edges of the room, never far from shelter. The feeling I am getting is that she is prepared to tolerate the situation, but feels it could be better ... poor pet. I suspect she is plotting her escape

I have turned on the central heating on low as it is downright chilly this evening so she has it on in her room on a low setting. Talk about extremes, this morning i was worried her room was heating up too much as the room is east facing and in full sun ...

I think she just has to get used to being indoors again and being looked after instead of fending for herself. Just so pleaed she is safe now - she is a real babe :Luv2:.

ah yes. It has been a while ... :-[

But for a nervous animal she is remarkable self-possessed I have to say  :Luv: And she is in such good condition! It is amazing. I was expecting her to be at least underweight, but no. Madam is in fine fettle. She may even have a purr inside her somewhere, if I can just work out where it is  :Luv: :Luv:

Michelle, this is definitely our Maddie and the couple feeding her knew her from before her previous owner passed away. They've spent months building her trust enough to be able to get her in the basket.  :sneaky:

Every now and again we get a case that just doesn't make sense and Maddie is one of them. Often we never know the truth about what they've been up to, although what you say adds weight to my hunch that she'd got some kind of shelter somewhere.  :Dont know: One thing is for sure, she wouldn't have remained that fit and healthy for long once the weather turns.  :(

The slinking along the floor and around the skirting boards is classic for cats who've been straying for a while. My Tilly did it for a couple of days after returning home, but she actually lived here before so snapped out of it. It may take Maddie a while as this is totally new surroundings for her.  :blow kiss:

Excellent that she's sitting on your lap, BC. :ok:

Hi all this is def Maddie.. Maddie doesnt have a chip due to mess up at the vets they originally told me she did but it was Melissa that was chipped. Maddie is chipped now though with one of ours.. So think what would of happened if another rescue would of picked her up...? Its good that the people kept in touch for such a long time, but i do suspect she was being cared for by someone. However, pls not the road she was nr was a very busy ring road and this would of been a very different Maddie in the winter.. The road would i think of been her downfall..

But to me she sounds further along them Melissa when i had her. Certaintly i didnt get Melissa eating well for days afterwards and i still here she has abit of a delicate tummy...

I spoke to CP HQ about this story on Friday and although they were a titch interested they didnt think it deserved more then a brief mention in their in house mag..! Oh well...... in the PR front I suppose we are suppose to do this all the time... so its not news worthy!

Just proves apoint what you have to do to make a story news worthy nowadays

Well, Maddie has come out of her shell well and truly - I have only just escaped  :Luv: :Luv:

Went into the room and she was still sitting on the window sill looking hunched up and unsure. Went over and carefully pulled the curtain to one side and started stroking her. Her front feet started kneading, 1---------2-------------1---------------2------1--2-1-2-1-2 and she started sitting up into my hand. Changed stroke and she stood up, bum in air as only a siamese really enjoying herself does, and ...... she purrred!!!! :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: Have spent the last ten minutes struggling to get out cos a siamese in the mood for lurrrrrrrrve is a very clingy thing indeed - 10 minutes lap time, and still twisting round my ankles as i left the room - won't take this girl long to figure out what a home is about all over again  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Feeling guilty now cos she can't sleep on the bed. maybe I should sleep in there with her ...?

OOOh Black cat- not two of them that are going to want to kip on my face!!  Melissa is terrible for this I was hoping that once reunited with Maddie she might be less clingy- I appear wrong ;D

It does seem that Maddie is much better than Melissa, as Sharon said it was a while before she settled (or came out of the wigwam- as you all know) or ate properly and indeed she is still a bit of a fusspot with a delicate tummy.

Melissa is currently giving me a hard stare from right at the side of my face "You wouldnt be staring at me like that Missa if you knew what was being chatted about here!!! :P)

I think it is fantatsic that she is coming along so well and promise as soon as possible that pictures will be on the site.

Missa has turned into rather a naughty little mischevious thing and because I ignored her has now climbed up on top of the freezer (where the wigwam is) and nudged it off the edge so her lovely house, blankey and little purple octopus are now in a heap on the floor.   Id better go and sort it out!!

I know I said it a million times over to BC on the phone this morning, and to Sharon yesterday but THANKYOU, each and everyone involved.

Love Rae and naughy old t Missa

she seems more of a knees and stomach kind of girl, Rae, so you shouldn't suffocate. But she is certainly not standoffish - even let me kiss the top of her head! She did not hop straight onto my lap, but wandered onto it after getting onto the coffee table (the nearest thing to a sofa in that room as I too was sitting on it. and hopped from the floor to the coffee table and onto the card table when I rapped my fingers on it for her ... :Luv: Missa might be jealous! Are you sure she can't stay here  :evillaugh:

Team Canterbury are doing well, but sadly team Chatham has let the side down badly. As I said, I had the feeling last night she was plotting her escape and unfortunately she has managed to do just that. She wedged the louvre windows open at the top of the back window and made a successful escape last night. I have searched high and low and told every neighbour who is at home as well as contacting every emergency vet in the area, and RSPCA and CP. No sign of her, but my dog says she is in the garden next door. They are not at home at present so if they are not back by later this afternoon I will climb the fence and search their yard myself. My lot are confined to quarters so they do not scare her off if she tries to come back into the garden and I have put the cat tent in the back garden so if she does come, she will find a familiar space. The weather is getting a bit wilder so hopefully the rain will send her scurrying back to the only faintly familiar place she knows. My only consolation is that the space she landed in is fairly confined so she would have taken her time getting out of the garden and will have had a chance to work out where 'base' is, no matter how unfamiliar. Please send finding vibes my way while i continue my search ...  :(

I assume you are armed with large net, tranquiliser dart, lassoo and  crate   of course if you don't have these essentials readily available I suppose a pillow case, treats and a piece of string will suffice  ;)

Good luck Jo, I have a good feeling about this one and think she will be back soon ... she sounds like she is a fairly confident little madam and she knows who you are so at least that's ½ the battle.

Well, no sign of Madeline yet. I am planning to saturate the neighbourhood with posters today and will continue door knocking. There will be an announcement on Radio Kent which does a lost-pet section and last night I left the flap off the cat flap so she could get into the kitchen for food if she wanted, but no takers. Thanks for all your kind messages and if anyone can PM a cat communicator's details to me I would appreciate it. :(

Hiya all

Sorry I am being such a pain but can anyone put missing Maddie on the lost and found pages please.  I dont have enough information about where she is missing from such as the area, town etc or her size, colours, and all the important information needed to start a lost thread.

I would really approeciate it, I know Jo is probably doing everything possible to find her so maybe a lost cat notice would help on the Lost and found page.  I have put a notice on CatChat wth a link back to this thread and left a message with Medway RSPCA just in case and have left details with Celia Hammond Animal Trust, Union Street, also known as Marchig Animal Welfare Trust Animal Clinic. (Tel: 01634 202203).   THe lady there says that if any cat is brought to them they will scan for chips immediately but she has taken my number just in case.

I have emailed her details to  Siamese Cat Club Welfare Trust, Lost & Found Siamese.

Maddie now listed onwww.nationalpetregister.org/index.php as well.

I am currently ringing round and leaving messages where I can.  Hope this is ok.. .  I dont want to tread on toes and do things that have already been organised buy others so just let me know if im being a pain.  I am  happy to help. :)

Thank You
xxxxxx

Ps.  I will keep editing this post with details of where I have sent Maddies profile if thats ok too.

Rae, I am so sorry about this awful thing.   :'(

Fortunately Maddie is now chipped and we have her number. I believe she is now registered to you? I also think her chip has been 'flashed up' as a missing cat with Petplan?  :shify: This will let anyone scanning her immediately see her status.  ;)

Because I've dealt with trying to find this cat before and after seeing the terrain BC lives in when I dropped her off, I think it's highly possible she's still within a 200 yard radius of BC's house. Maddie is sly alright!  :tired: She'll allow herself to be caught when she's good and ready, and as time increases that gets more likely as she runs out of easy food sources. Please try not to worry about her safety as there aren't any major hazzards in the area.  ;)

I don't think there is anything else to be done from a remote distance. Finding her will be due to house to house enquiries, etc., and I'm afraid only BC can do that. I really wish her the best of luck.  :(
Title: Re: Madeleine - Siamese cat missing in Chatham area
Post by: Sam (Fussy_Furball) on August 11, 2008, 19:25:29 PM
I agree with Julie I have a feeling that Maddie will show herself when she feels hungry.  The main thing in her favour is the fact she is a Siamese - everyone knows what a Siamese looks like (even people that know nothing about cats) so as long as BC gets the word out (which I have no doubt she has done and will continue to do) as soon as Maddie shows herself she will be caught.

Haven't had a chance to read the PMs yet, but look forward to doing so. BUT!!! Madeline has been spotted, and, as I suspected, it loitering in the back footpath. There is heaps of cover there, so I suspected she would go to ground there.  :wow:

The man who responded to my flyer rang, and as we were speaking, she wandered across this back garden. Unfortunately he went out and she shot of back up the path. Of all the gardens in the street, his is the best one for a lost and confused cat as he has a double block, with the undeveloped section overgrown with vegetation.

So the plan is, he will put food out for her every morning at 7 am, in the routine she is accustomed to, and I have put the Ikea Tent half way along that part of the alley (with a note explaining why it is there), together with another bowl of food which will be replaced twice daily. I will sadly have no idea whether it is Madeline or someone else eating from my bowl, but my neighbour at No 68 will know when she eats from his. :wow:

So all is not completely lost, phew!

Will keep you posted and will spend some time in his back garden every evening until I can get her safely home ...

Rae, if you feel even a tenth as terrible about this as I do you are holding together very well. We know where she is, we know she is safe, and we have the means to establish a routine for her to settle down to which will hopefully not take too long. Just keep sending her calming vibes, and I am getting an animal communicator to do the same thing (with some clear directions on where to go to be safe). So lots of calm thoughts her way and also a big 'move up the hill, past the cat tent to the garden with the Anderson shelter in it - after the sun goes down, but before dark so the dog and the house cats are not there ...' - of we all send the same message to her, she should receive it. Anyone with a spare 10 minutes, send it to her while looking at the photo on this thread ...

Thanks all

Just a last quick message before I go to bed.  The Siamese Rescue have just been in touch and advised that they have read the thread and are going to hold off advertising Maddie as missing for the moment in case any "well intentioned persons"  attempt to "rescue" her when she is so close to home.

I fully understand what they are saying and so for the time being have removed her from the missing pet register as she is not really lost at the moment (thank goodness).

I hope this makes sense and that everyone agrees this is the best thing for the time being.

Sending loads of positive vibes over to Maddie to hurry home.

that sounds like good advice Rae, the last thing i want is a bunch of chav kids chasing her in hopes of a reward. I think that with some patience and help from the nice man down the road, we should manage to bring her back home. Hopefully it won't take 4 months this time ...

If we make it as calm and non-threatening an approach as possible we should make haste slowly.

It is forecasting rain tomorrow, but still mild, so will hope this will encourage her to be a bit more committed to accepting help. The little madam was just sitting looking at me from a distance of about 20 feet, as if to say - hah, can't catch me!

Will be out first thing and go over to no. 68 with a good book tomorrow evening so I can sit still for a bit longer this time ... (and with my bra on this time    )

I have taken her name off the National Register and will delete it from Cat Chat now.  If she is unsited for any length of time I can easily put the ads back on but for now totally agree.

BC seeing as Maddie used to live with a man and, if I remember correctly the last person that she "befriended" was a man ... I get the impression this little Madam "likes the boys"  :evillaugh:  therefore if your nice "chap down the road" is on the case I have a feeling she quite likely to go to him if he is calm.

He seems a nice steady type actually. Would rather fancy him myself. Nice quiet, saltoftheearth type, no nonsense and not a fusser - just what we need. And his kids are older so not so likely to go shrieking after Madeline either ... a good find on her part I feel.

well the good news is that I stupidly left the back door unlocked this morning so drainpipes would not have been necessary Julie. The bad news is his wife answered the phone when I called today ...

The other good news is that I have had two more calls reporting Madeline in the same general area, so am about to head off there (wearing more suitable cat-wrangling clothes) to see what I can do.

My sinusitis really kicked in last night and had next to no sleep and a bit of a temperature all day so have been sent home from work early so I can recover. Little do they realise I will be spending the next few hours climbing over obstacles and sitting in scudding showers while looking for a cat ... Ah well, life is never dull I guess.

I think I am going to have to do a swoop as I am concerned she may wander onto Palmerston Road. My stranger/allies have reported her there and have instructions to encourage her back into the alley ways, but am not too sure how reliable they are. They might try to catch her which could spook her. Will phone them again tonight once i have done a patrol and see if I can encourage a more moderate approach... One was willing to stand and keep an eye on her until I got there, but changed her mind when she discovered I was in London. Still that sort of dedication could come in useful if directed in the right direction ...

Am going to leaflet the next section of street, cos wandering down the road clutching a feather tickler and a large beach towel I struck up conversation with several people all of whom had seen her. Oddly enough this was not the strangest sight in that part of the street today - the other person was carrying an entire toilet and cistern, which he kindly delivered to someone's back garden while passing ...

None of the sightings were recent and the nice man tells me the food was eaten by a one-eyed black cat who hangs around his place... so am back at home sorting out if I have sufficient leaflets to distribute. If not, will do one side of the street today and the other side tomorrow when armed with more resources...

Title: Re: Madeleine - Siamese cat missing in Chatham area
Post by: blackcat on August 15, 2008, 22:35:10 PM
Afraid so, Sam. She is being incredibly elusive. Have not had a sighting today, but last night spoke to a cat communicator. We spoke at some length, and her descriptions of Madeline's personality and those of my own animals were uncannily correct so have to assume she was reasonably reliable. The more so as she did not have pictures of Shadow or Esther or their names, but said that Maddy sees the dog as a big black shadow. She said that Maddy is still in the immediate vicinity and comes to sit in the garden at night, so today, having run myself ragged all week looking for her, I sat in the garden for a couple of hours in the hope she would turn up, but to no avail.

The communicator says she said she had run away because the house was dark and silent, and it made her afraid. Later she said that 'home' means darkness and being closed in and bad smells, so she is inclined to be tempted to the gypsy life because she can look after herself with her hunting. But the word 'winter' gave her pause for thought.

My own animals are still showing signs that there is something concerning them and they are travelling in the direction from my place that the communicator said Maddy is in - an not as far as usual. So maybe there is something to it.

She certainly described my back garden and that of the house next door quite accurately as well as the doors themselves. He has a glass panel in the door and I have a solid timber one, painted. She gave the same description, as well as details about paving and bark chips in the garden (his, not mine).

So I am hoping and praying she is right. But in the mean time, tomorrow I will ask around once more and see what folk have to say.

I am reluctant to leaflet any more as it seemed to stir up a bit of a frenzy of activity in the neighbourhood with people wanting to be the first to catch her, which is not the right approach. But if I ask strategically, I may find something useful and can recruit more discreetly ...

She's a little nightmare isn't she... really hoping and praying that you manage to see, if not catch, her this weekend.

Sounds like the animal communicator was pretty good.

oh I wish that little Maddie would just give herself up!  am following her story with baited breathe!

the communicator sounds good...I am always dubious about such things, but when they start describing stuff such as doors, gardens etc - and getting it rioght, then you just have to believe that there is something to it.

maybe I should get her details! are they expensive?
Title: Re: Madeleine - Siamese cat missing in Chatham area
Post by: blackcat on August 16, 2008, 08:46:49 AM
Meezer, I am not sceptical of the process but am very sceptical of some of the people who set themselves up to do it, especially for cash. But this one did have a really good insight into Madelines character (which might have been built up from reading this or other threads), however her knowledge of Esther's personality when she did not know I had Esther and had not seen her picture was what convinced me she really was talking about my animals. And since she is in Bristol, and I am in Chatham, that was good enough for me. It is quite expensive, but worth it, to my mind, if you find a good one. The cost is £1.00 per minute. The basic process is that you send photo showing eyes (a little tricky for Maddy, but there is one with her eyes averted), and name, age and gender of the missing animal. They arrange a time for you to call. You speak for about 5 minutes then they hang up for about 15 minutes while contacting the animal. Then she rings back to describe the personality of the animal she is in touch with. You then can confirm or deny that this is your animal. If it is, then she goes from there.

My life has just become a little more complicated as my sister has emailed to let me know that Mum is very ill and probably will die this week, so I have a lot of thinking to do.

Will go for a walk around the neighbourhood and see what I can see.

I think we need to keep the focus of this thread on Madeline, but thanks for your good wishes, TT and MM and Sam. I will let you know what arrangements i have made for Madeline if I have to travel. But basically I am more likely to go back for the scattering of the ashes, which would be not until September (assuming mum does die, which is never a safe bet) so hopefully not for a while yet.

I think that that would be a more appropriate time as we would have the whole family together there and maybe I can share my genealogical research as part of the healing for mum's younger brother, my uncle ....

If Maddy is close by there is a lad next door who I will try to recruit into caring for her foodwise and company wise if I she is still out there, but hopefully we can get her back indoors before then.

Title: Re: Madeleine - Siamese cat missing in Chatham area

THere are at least five cats that live within two houses of me, let alone the ferals. But if I can get my hands on a trap I will see what I can do. Problem is the Medway RSPCA is a receiving and caring place only and does not do trapping, and the local CP is much the same. Also, Julie tells me she managed to evade traps for four months in Canterbury so it is unlikely I would have any more luck. But yes, it is something I will try once I figure out where she is.

Sadly no. Those who were reporting her presence never had a second sighting, and each report became more distant. She seemed to be travelling in the direction of Canterbury so is presumably on her way home. Unfortunately my trip to Australia for my mother's funeral meant that by the time I returned there were no more sightings. I feel quite dreadful about this, but there is realistically nothing more I can do to find her and can only hope that, as she is microchipped, she will be found and identified by some stranger. Also that she has found a safe warm spot with a good supply of food. :(

You wasnt to know that she would break out.

I am quiet sure that somebody has taken her in or is being feed by someone.
I gotta a feeling that one day this little one will turn up again and the fact that she is mirco-chipped she will be captured

Hi everyone

Im sorry Ive been away from the board for a while.

My daddy lost his fight against mesothlioma after a two year fight and so things are far from normal around here at the moment.  My world collapsed and it is still very raw at the moment as we only had dads funeral on Wednesday so please forgive me for not being around or taking part in the auction.

I have had a ring around over the last few weeks to various vets but there is still no sightings and she has not been taken to any of the vets I have called.

Rest assured though she is welcome a home here if she ever turns up, regardless of how many kittties I will have by that time! :)

Melissa is thriving and now sleeps on  the beds, in fact I am thinking of putting a "wigwam to let" board up as she never hides in there anymore, not since she discovered eiderdowns and squashy pillows.

I hope everyone is well and I know its a little early but hope you all have a great Christmas and new year.

Love to all
