Title: 3 cats in Portsmouth under threat of PTS - can anyone help?
Post by: LesleyW on April 11, 2008, 16:33:53 PM
Just had a phone call from a "gentleman" in Portsmouth.  His daughter has just gone through a marriage breakup, has a young baby and three neutered cats, I think two girls and one boy.  They claim they are spraying the cot and the pram and therefore must be re-homed.  As usual, I am their last hope and if I can't help the cats will be put to sleep if they can find a vet to do it.  Luckily the vets they have been to so far have refused.

I am full at the present time so am putting out a plea to anyone that can help.  I have pm'd Koscha in case she would be interested in these, but presently she is off line.

Just tried phoning the woman now to get some more details and, as is usual, can't get hold of anyone. Why do people phone you late Friday evening and expect you to be able to do something immediately and then you can't contact them again.

I've just spoke to the woman and am taking the cats tommorrow . What a difference a day makes , sad that she thought her only way out of the situation was to put kitties down for being a 'bit stressed'! I've had to deal with that situation before and managed to get harmony back again!
People give up too easily, but saying that they'll have all the fuss, cuddles and love they'll need here..... :Luv2: ;)

Ruth, aka Koscha, thank you sooo much for helping these babes.  When I first got the call I was devastated, not having the space for 3 here at the moment, but I thought it was worth pming you in case you were interested and you have saved the day. :Luv: :Luv:

Look forward to seeing photos of these furbabes and I hope the woman appreciates how lucky she is to get someone to take all three of her cats at once, it doesn't happen very often.

The boys are currently hiding under the futon......bless 'em

Previous owners couldn't even be bothered to tell me thier names, couldn't have cared less.  >:( -But never mind once they get used to us then it's spoilt rotten time!
And I get to have fun naming them  ;)
Will put piccies on  as soon as we can get decent ones;

Naming mine was fun.  It sort of symbolises a new start.  Called mine Malena.  Also gave my new kittie a birthdate (and then pretended it was 10 years ago as that is her estimated age) just to mark the start of a better life.  She is so scared of every day noises. Makes you wonder what she has gone through.  Her brindle tortie fur is starting to go all shiny and the 'dandruff' i noticed seems to have subsided after a grooming session.

I'm so pleased you've got them, I was beginning to worry that something had gone wrong as there had been no posting during the day.  These people are just amazing, aren't they.  They don't appreciate at all what you have done for them and are just pleased to see the back of the cats, by the sound of things.  They probably were spraying at all, just too much hard work for her with a new baby and to think they would have just had them put to sleep if they could have found a vet to do it.  I must remember to thank Harbour Vets when I go to pick up the food collection they have for me, they were the ones who gave the father my number and refused to pts.

Look forward to photos and names.  I expect it is a bit much to ask that they gave you any vaccination details for them?

Lesley, the line they spun you was a load of  :censored:!
I think the spraying was genuine but not a hanging offence!!
Marriage breakdown my  :censored:, hubby turned up with her  >:( and when i spoke to her on the phone she said 'my OH's into football'  :P in fact the'father' you spoke to was him-I bet you!
Managed to drag it out of her that cats haven't been vaccinated, she says there are no vet records (???) believe me I asked, might be worth asking at harbour vets (have you got thier address?). They live in bedhampton, may be worth asking vets around there, she said they haven't been to a vet for 4 years. They will do soon  ;)
BTW boys are 8 and the girl is 9.
I'll announce names when we can get piccies *drum roll*   ;)

Harbour vets that normally give out my address are in London Road, I've got to go in there next week so I will make enquiries.

Hey the girl is almost as old as my new one- she has been estimated at 10 years.  The rescue centre vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and gave her a general check up and a full dental.  So that is pretty good.  Hey, we may be the ones in Pets at Home now buying in industrial proportions.

I always find it amazing how many vets estimate cats to be 10 years old; Dawn and I were only saying this othe day, when they are not sure it always seems to be 10 years.

Battesea Dogs Home estimated my Tilly to be 8-10 years when I adopted her. That was 7 years ago and she still bounces round the place like Darcey Bussell on speed. Got that wrong, didn't they! :evillaugh:

Our vets usually guesstimate seems to be ish. Of course nowadays it seems harder to tell by the teeth. So many little ones seems to need dentals as young as 2 ish. Yet others who we know are at least 10 have beautiful teeth. Of course cats who have been treated for ringworm can have terrible teeth at any age as one of the side effects of one of the treatments affects the teeth.

I was in Pets at Home today!
Was standing inside waiting for my OH to get a trolley when one of the staff walked by......

'OMG are you alright there!' was her comment.

Granted I was standing there next to 50 litres of cat litter, 3x4kg bags of biscuits and two giant size litter trays!
Like you say Pandora the bulk buying has started!  ;)

Collared her to discuss pet carriers (thought i'd take the opportunity cos getting a member of staff in Pets at home is a rare occurence!)

Hopefully have piccies soon, OH is currently screaming at the comp as it freezes when he tries to download the images from his mobile  ;D

Just looked at your pics.  They are very cute.  They all look related, just like my Martha and Lennie.   I can see you have the same hobby as me- lying under beds with a camera.  Well actually it is getting better now. She is coming out.

The good thing about yours is that they all know each other and at least the introduction is not tricky.  Just found Malena and Lennie having a slow motion stand off upstairs.  No more hissing, no more noises.  Can I call that progress or temporary truce?

Sounds like an improvement to me!
My guys are at that stage too, Keli's the one whose doing all the hissy spit spits at the moment. She's queen of the castle, Zeratuls next with Rinncewind at the bottom of the ladder at the moment. Shes given the boys a few dabs with her paw, but its mostly standoffs. Z just lays there half asleep  while Keli's the tense one!

Poor RW just retreats under the bed unless Z or meowmy and daddy are there to back him up!

As long as there's not fur flying scraps i'm putting it down to re-establishment of pecking orders due to change.
