As some of you may remember from a while back, my oldest girl is hyperthyroid, hunking great thyroid on left hand side.
Well, early hours of this morning, I heard a cat being sick by the cat tray, so I went to check and my lovely old tiny girl was lying in the tray ( after having been sick, she has almost always, if got the urge to honk, managed to make it to the tray ). Completely out of character. ( Well indeed for any cat ).
Anyhow, after we got her settled on her cushion and everything, I was stroking her and noticed the ' hunking great thyroid ' was no more. The lump ( whatever it was ) has burst. Oh ( insert choice swear word ) hell.
This is a cat who was absolutely great at the weekend, trying to steal my babies food when I fed her as she normally does.
She had some water this morning and moved about but things have gone downhill in the last few hours.
Anyhow, she is now upstairs with her cat family, as comfortable as I can make her, waiting for my hubbie to get home early to take her to the vets.
I feel so powerless, I can't drive, no local vets I like do housecalls, there is no-one who can get over to look after my daughter in order for me to get her there before my husband could anyway. I can't leave my daughter with anyone because of her current disability, and couldn't get to vets any quicker anyhow.
:(
Just posting here because you all understand.

Thanks girls, she is 18 this year so it's not like she has been taken young, but, well you all know.
I've given her strokes but don't want to bother her. She has always been affectionate ( very much of a washing you cat ) but on her terms, and I don't want to bug her.
My hubbie has arranged the ' other stuff ' for tomorrow ( er, a while you wait service ) so she won't be away from home long. Fortunately his boss is a cat person.

I am so very very sorry - it is hard to know what to say. . . .
Our old girl passed away at home last year. There was a gradual decline over 24 hours and we knew it was going to happen. We made her comfortable and all of us lay down next to her (she wasn't the sort of cat to like to be hugged, either) and told her how much we loved her but that it was okay for her to let go. We kept saying this over and over again, gently stroking her from time to time but more importantly, talking softly to her. She knew and we knew what was about to happen so we just let her know that we would miss her but that it was her time to go.
My thoughts are with you at this very difficult and sad time.

Thinking of you and your family at this time, the hardest part of loving them is letting them go
-
Well, thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughtfulness.
She is no longer in discomfort.
She was the last of my original band of girls, the fourth one to go in four and a half years.
Anyhow, thanks again everybody. Purrs is just so invaluable at times like this.

The Greatest Gift
I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.
It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.
It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.
The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.
For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.
Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.
I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.
So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all."
Forever and Always... Until Rainbow bridge....

Sorry to hear your news, she'll be free from any pain now  I hope she didn't suffer after the thyroid lump had burst :'( When Little Bob had a lump and they'd done a biopsy on it, Sean said it was on the point of rupturing, I decided at that point to have him pts, sadly he beat me to it and died whilst I was in work but thankfully it didn't burst.
:RIP: Baby girl, sweet dreams, xxxxxxxx

The vet said she truly didn't think she was in acute pain ( which was what I was obviously panicking about ) after it had burst, but was mostly just exhausted generally, just old basically and everything had worn out. Thankfully they managed to administer the business without her being distressed ( being so little etc I was worried they wouldn't be able to do it in the ' easiest ' way ), my sweetheart wasn't distressed at all, so thankful for that.
However I have unreal expectations about my cats because my childhood cat lived to at least 22, possibly 24.
Nearly 18 is not bad tho ( still seems way too young tho ;) ).

Really pleased she went peacefully bless her, I think coping with the loss is so much harder otherwise

Indeed, having seen it when it is less so.
Thanks for your lovely words ( to everyone ).

Aww, I am so sorry to hear this, but you gave her a wonderful 18 years, not all cats are lucky to see that age, so it shows how good your care was. RIP little one.

What a lovely thing to say Desley. I'm a bit at sixes and sevens today I must admit, so it was lovely to read that.

Really sorry J  glad her passing was peaceful.

Sorry for your loss J, you did the best thing by her
IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
-
So sorry J. She will send you a rainbow soon, I'm sure

I know i'm new here but I know how empty it makes you feel and how much you miss them just being there. I feel for you I really do but she's at peace now. Hugs to you all at this sad time.

I am glad you could take some comfort from that. It is such a hard thing to do, but we are all here for you, sadly the majority of us know what you are going through.

Hi J,
I have just caught up with this thread and can only reiterate what others have said. Having had Chloe from the age of 19 and looking after her every need until she died at about 23, it didn't help me to hear that she had a good innings or similar from friends. People mean well but it doesn't help at all. All life is precious regardless of age.
Having said that the English Language or, at least, our command of it leaves a lot to be desired at these times.
I, therefore, thought I would convey my heartfelt condolences with the following poem which is uplifting in my opinion. I have forgotten where I read it but, if it provides honest comfort, it will have served the right purpose:
And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.
’Are you coming then?’ asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.
’But don't they understand?’,asked God,
’That you'll never leave them?’
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.
