Title: Can you take out an ASBO on a cat?

Just wondering as Charlie is heading that way.  Do you know what he did this morning and it is very worrying?  We have a hole in the wall living flame gas fire in the dining room and he jumped right into it and tried to settle down.  I shouted so loud and pulled him out that I think he was shocked but I am now worried (again) so am going to tape cardboard over it and get a safer one.  This probably explains why a piece of the hot coal dislodged itself and felt onto the rug and burned it a couple of weeks ago.

I would be careful as the living coals are coated with a flame retardant that is poisonous to cats - I read on purrs recently that someones cat died from licking them  :(

Thanks for that Mark.  I am boarding it up anyway and changing it to a glass fronted one.

I hate scare stories but think people should know. I think what had happened is cats can start licking stones with certain illnesses like diabetes and this had happened  :(

Yes that is a timely warning Mark and you are so right.

I think Charlie has been checked at the vets very recently but it may be worth at least speaking to them if he has been licking the stones.

Thanks for the link etc.  I don't think he has been licking the coals, he just wanted to settle down on the coals and was only there for a split second before I hoiked him out.  He is due at the vet tomorrow to have his ears checked so will mention it then.

Can you buy a fire guard? That's what I bought for my fireplace to stop Lexy getting in there. I gave it to my sister because Pippa is too curious for her own good.

Am looking at them at the moment on the net.  I was just so shocked.  I mentioned it to the vet today, he didn't seem overly concerned and said that the majority of the fires are animal safe.

Mm wouldn't agree with that. It depends on the fire place but still, you need to protect it for your own peace of mind. I knew Lexy would try to get up the flue if she tried to hide. We had an old fire place in South Africa and our cat used to constantly find her way up the flue and then back again.

Not sure I agreed with it either but it is my responsibility to keep him safe.  Fire is currently boarded up whilst I sort out something.  Looks lovely (NOT)
