Title: Cat milk and medication!
Post by: caledonia on March 24, 2008, 19:06:19 PM
Just looking for advice please - by my age I should be able to trust my own judgement but clealry not lol!!

So my wee man Edgar is on Metacam (had another thread about that before) and this time with the reduced dose there has been no blood issues. However the problem is he is a bit of a funny eater. Sometimes he will eat his meal in one sitting and sometimes he grazes, which is fine except the metacam is given to him in his food and making sure him and Oscar have seperate food to give him his medication is hard enough, never mind when the doesn't eat it all at once. So I try and put the metacam to the top of his food so I know he has had it but twice this has backfired and he has vommitted it up - and proceeding to keep eating. I know this can happen if it is given on an empty stomache.

The one thing he does eat in a oner is cat milk which I give as an occasional treat. I had asked on here about it before and most people thought it is fine in moderation but not as a daily thing.

Thing is if I give him just a little bit every day after his dinner (so his stomache is full) with the metacam is in it then I know he will get his correct dose (I just tried it and he cleared the bowl despite leaving some food).

Surely if it is just a dash of cat milk it can't be all that bad even if it is daily. I don't want to get him into bad habits but the metacam is for a tumour on his face, so very important. Edgar is a bit underweight anyway as the tumour means he eats very slow so no weight gain issue - and I am just meaning a splash of milk - like a bottle lasting 4-5 days.

Any views - I should just trust my instinct and go for it - think the vet would think I was a bit neurotic if I even put this question to him lol!!

I think if it is a small amount for meds, then it is fine. When Tom was first getting his Metacam, I had to use a bit of tuna imperial, then he liked the taste and licked it out of the bottle for me!!

Does he still get it now ?  How do you give it to him?

This will probably need to be a long term medication for Edgar depending on what happens with the tumour. I will see how I go with the cat milk - so far its the only way he always keeps it down.

When Dragan was on Metacam I used to mix it with a tiny bit of tuna.  Once he had eaten all that then I gave him his proper dinner.

Tom was one of my fosters who was rehomed over a year ago. At first I gave it him in Tuna (despite it not being a good thing for him, he had it for cystitis), as he wouldnt take it in cat milk, then he got to like the taste and took it out of the bottle or in his wet food. If you needed him to eat the wet food and make sure no one else eats it (Tom also had Cystaid in his food), you could just give him a small amoutn with the meds in, then when he has eaten that, give him the rest of his portion with nothing in.
