Post by: MBll on January 06, 2007, 00:39:20 AM
On another forum a post has been put on just now for help ...the post says this

My friends husband just caught their kittens tail in the door. It started to bleed, but has since stopped. This was about 15 minutes ago. The kitten is 16 weeks old & they're getting no answer from the vets. Any advice appreciated.

I dont have too much experience but have they checked the tail? Is it swollen or is there a gash/cut that can be seen?

Blimey.

Kitten needs to be kept warm and still, assess amount of bleeding (eg is wound oozing, dripping, constant trickle or more?), keep it as clean as possible, cool it to contract blood vessels, keep it above heart level (eg head down) if the kitten will let them - which would in itself be a sign that all is not well cos a 16wk kitten shouldn't cooperate with that.

If it's doing more than oozing and/or hasn't stopped after 20mins the kit definately needs vet.

If kitten shows signs of shock (abnormal behaviour, kitten collapses or won't wake up properly, gums very pale or white instead of healthy pink) then its also definately a vet job even if bleeding is stopping.

If lots of blood is being lost (more than a trickle) then kitten needs vet NOW.

If they're not getting a reply from the vet they're trying then they need to try other numbers - where are they?

Vets phones usually have recorded message that gives emergency number.

If not look in telephone book for vets and just ring anyone in the area

This the update from her...some1 give her an emergency number

Right...Nic rang that number and got a lovely lady who gave her lots of advice. They say the tip of the tail may have to come off, but as she is so young, she will be very resiliant. They just have to keep her calm & take her for pain killer & anti biotic jab in the morning. They can't judge the state of the tail till she's seen tomorrow. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it...as does Tigga & Nic her owner. I'll update....thanks again

4.5 inches, blimey that must be half a tail at least  :scared:, did that happen with the door accident or did the vet have to amputate? Poor little fella, at least he should be a bit more comfortable now after pain killers
