As just mentioned in my other thread, everything just happened at once and now my homecheck is tonight! Does anyone have any tips?
-
just be yourself - good luck!!
-
Don't forget to offer tea?
Be yourself!
Fingers crossed for you!
-
That's exactly what I was going to say Dawn. :Luv2: Just relax and it will be fine.
Just be prepared to show her where the litter tray will go and food bowls etc, so it shows you have put thought into things. Try and hide as many of the cables in your house as possible so they are not a hazard to kitties, and don't make the place look too perfect, a house is never perfect when you own cats. :Luv2:
GOOD LUCK :luck:
-
Don't forget to offer tea?
And cream cakes help :evillaugh:
Seriously, nothing to worry about - as already said, be yourself. It's not an interview, it's just to be sure the cats are going to a safe environment.
The very first stray I collected was from an old man that had been feeding a cat all summer in his garden but was worried about the cold. He had cooked a chicken when I got there and was surprised that I didn't want to have a roast with him :evillaugh: - he insisted on giving me a bottle of red wine "for the petrol" - that was a one off as nothing like it since :evillaugh:
-
I have never had one but have asked the question before in case I needed one.
Access is likely to be looked at and proximity to busy roads etc.
Unfortunately with home checking there are no hard and fast rules. I believe that everybody is taken on their own merits just be yourself and good luck.
-
When I ws homechecked for Kylie, I had some boxes in the garden from moving and apologised - he said cats love boxes :evillaugh:
-
What time is she coming over? :shify:
-
Oh this is great, very good luck
-
That's about it. Be yourself. If you already have the homechecker list from Sharon, you prob know all the right answers. Just remember though that the homechecker isn't there to be obstructive but to help you and the newbies make a success of it. Everything will be fine. How very exciting. Cream cakes certainly won't hurt though ;)
-
We can offer tea, coffee and 3 kinds of biscuits! lol. I'll get my OH onto that when she arrives, he's the tea/coffee drinker amongst us - I don't think he'd be willing to part with any of his precious bottles of wine though!! Luckily the house is pretty tidy at the moment and I've sold all the car parts that were lingering a month or so ago!
I think I have pretty much everything covered, my only concern is her opinion on our front only entrance as our garden is at the rear of the house, hopefully by visiting, she'll see how quiet it is where we live and it will be ok. From our point of view they will be indoor cats unless they really want to go out, in which case they will be allowed out to play when someone is home (half the day) in case they get injured or stuck somewhere and need help. We are nowhere near any busy roads, we are at the end of a lot of small residential roads which lead no-where and there is a lovely big wood behind us.
I have planned out where litter trays, bed etc will all go and some of these things have arrived already so hopefully she will see that we are well prepared.
Shes coming at 5 - very soon, I'm going home in about 20mins - OH is hopefully tidying away his guitars and associated cables!!!
-
I've never had a homecheck so can't offer you any advice ... just want to wish you good luck :Luv:
-
best of luck ;D
-
Thank you for everyones good wishes! I will certainly be back on here as soon as I know the outcome!
-
Thats good and we will all be waiting with baited breath ;D
-
good luck... although I doubt you need it! ;)
just be yourself. look forward to the outcome! :)
-
Good luck and some of these :cuddle: :cuddle: :cuddle:
Just be yourself and you'll be fine
-
We're having kitties!! :Luv:
The lady was absolutely lovely, poor OH had cleaned the whole house and she only came through the hall and into the lounge! She was quite happy with the access to the garden, just said cats will wander anyway, safe neighbourhood etc! I think because I told her about Casper, she realised that I knew what a kitten/young cat would need and understood how manic they can be when they are little!!
I'm so excited!!!!! Thank you everyone for all your support!
-
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss ;D
Next question of course , is when can you collect them ;D
-
Hopefully at the weekend as they come off their meds on Friday and have a follow up with the vets!!
-

There will be plenty more pics to come once they are here!! I'm off to buy more cat supplies!!!

-
Well done Bryony,
At least you have a clean house now! :evillaugh:
The state of someones house (within reason), doesn't come into it and I'm sure it would have been clean anyway
I guess you couldn't take any chances after all you have bee through.
Glad you got there in the end.
-
That's wonderful news ;D
:congrats:
They are gorgeous kitties :Luv2: Can't wait to see more pics of them when you get them home (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k183/Tabby2005/partytime.gif)(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k183/Tabby2005/partytime.gif)
-
Yaaayyyyy ;D
Well done, that's fabulous news
-
So come on ... what are they called??
-
Finally! You must be sooooo excited for the weekend - and it is great you will have the whole four days to get to know your lovely new furbabes!!! :wow:
-
Wow - mexican wave smileys!!
Can't wait to get them home!!! At the moment, their names are Mitzie and Nana, I like the name Mitzie, but Nana seems an odd name for a cat so that may be changing. My OH desperately wants a cat names after one of the thundercats so he wants to call her 'Cheatara'
-
Thunder Thunder Thunder Thunder Cats :evillaugh: (Clare is off in her own little world again singing the Thundercats theme tune) :shy:
-
Lol, yeh - thats pretty much what OH did when I asked him what names he liked. hehe!
-
Thunder, thunder, thundercats, Ho! Thundercats are on the move, Thundercats are loose, Feel the magic, hear the Roar, Thundercats are loose,

Poor you.
-
nana is my grandmother - otherwise known as Myrt the Turt. aka myrtle annie, because her father was so excited when he recorded the birth he forgot he promised his wife it would be Myrtle Anne ...
You definitely need a new name there ! ;D
-
Lol, yup! Simon called his grandma 'Nana' too so we obviously had to rethink that one!
-
About bleedin' time! :Luv:
I'm so pleased for you. And I can see why you wanted to hold out for them. They're just purrrrrrrrrfect!! ;) :Flowers:  :congrats: :grouphug:
-
I'm sooooo pleased for you hun
-
Brilliant news - well worth the wait I am sure....and all the hassle!! :wow:
-
Thunder, thunder, thundercats, Ho! Thundercats are on the move, Thundercats are loose, Feel the magic, hear the Roar, Thundercats are loose,

Poor you.
Sorry couldn't resist :evillaugh:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qd_IsxgAf8
-
Pleased you did that Ellie cos hadnt a clue what anyone was talking about
-
Lol my daughter loved that programme Gill :evillaugh:
-
So pleased the homecheck went well! ;D
-
Glad everything went well.
-
Have to say, I'd never watched Thundercats although I was aware of my OH's slight obsession with it when he was younger, I should have seen it coming! If he insists on naming her 'Cheatara', I imagine it will get quickly shortened to 'Chi' or 'Tara'!
-
Woo Hoo :wow: Excellent news :)
-
fantastic news!!! well done. I'm so excited for you .... :)
Oh... and those piccies.. first time I've seen them... I'm in lurrve :Luv2: :Luv2: I just adore gingers.... they 2 are just soooo scrummy!
Look forward to more piccies... and can totally understand why you fell for their charms! ;)
-
Congratulations - just caught up with this after not being able to get online at home all night. Well done you, can't wait to see more piccies.
-
There will be plenty more pics taken this wkend of them! (And Lesley, I will get pics/sizes of that cage too!) They were still a little skinny when I took that one a week or so ago, not sure they were cared for that well in their previous home as they have put on a bit of bulk since they have been at the centre and feel less bony now.
Not been able to get through to the centre on the phone to 'book' a day to pick them up, so I faxed them my home check form and said I'd like to collect them this wkend. Will send OH over on his way home from work to check they got it and all is ok!
-
Hi so glad it has worked out ok in the end. Look forward to seeing the pictures too ;D
-
Grrr - Angry now! Booked to pick the girls up at 10.15 Saturday at lunch time, OH got home from work and there was a message on the home phone saying they are not going to let us have them until next weekend because the vet wants to carry on their antibiotics for another week.
Why can't we just give them the meds!? They know I've had 2 cats before and I said last week that if they needed more meds, I'd be happy giving them and taking them back to either our vets or their vet for a checkup. I'm pretty angry about it because I'm almost certain that it was being in that drafty cage that gave them the colds in the first place! They would recover much better in their lovely warm heated bed at home!

I guess they're thinking that the stress of the move to a new home might bring on further sniffles, but that could happen anyway and at some point they are gonna have to make that journey and get settled into their new environment and be in you care, so sooner rather than later will probably make no difference. I can understand your frustration, more waiting...
-
Its not really the waiting that bothers me, I just want to get them out of that cage, Its still drafty even now they've put the flap back in the catflap because they don't understand what the flap is so the staff propped it half open or they wouldn't go out to use the toilet. I would think its as stressful being there as being with someone they recognise in the warm, even if it is strange territory. If they have been on the antibiotics for a week and aren't better, their surroundings are probably part of the problem.
-
It's really cheeky of me to ask but I wonder if Lesleys incubator could be put to use. If Lesley didn't mind and you were willing, you could offer to pick them up in a heated carrier? - just an idea?
-
I could do, although I only live 10 mins from the rescue and they would be going straight back to a big heated cat bed!
-
I just thought it would show you are willing to jump through (more) oops to get them where they should be. I agree they would be betteroff in a warm home. Some of our cats that have been moved from pens to foster homes have thrived in a home environment. I bet it's cold and draughty there >:(
-
My babies are in it at the moment but I'm sure they could manage for an hour or so without it but as Bryony says, with her living so near, and the incubator being a bit of a large thing to maneouvre, it would probably take longer to move them than in a normal carrier. I have plenty of snugglesafes you could put in a carrier, if that would be better, but anything I could do to help, I would be willing.
Unfortunately, I think it's just another case of them sticking to their rules with regard to medicating the babes and I doubt you will get them to change their mind - they do seem to be one of those places that think they know best in all scenarios, even if we can all see a different picture.
I also have an electric heated pad if you wanted that for their bed, it's one of the ones Ron kindly donated to me.
-
It just seems odd, because I'm sure they are happy to let cats with ongoing health problems go home with their meds.
It is definitely drafty, their outside cage is just wire straight to the outside and they have a flap into their very small indoor pen, but as I said the flap is propped half open because they don't understand how it works! Every time they want to use the litter tray they have to go outside. And to top it off, the weather is supposed to be really cold this weekend! Grr
I'm going to go and put my case accross tomorrow but I am 99% sure they will refuse because of 'procedure'.
Lesley - thanks for the offer, but the bed I bought them already has a variable heat pad in it, only the best eh!? lol
-
Thats really dumb :-:
-
Exactly what I thought. I re-listened to the message when I got home. The woman on the phone said 'I hope this doesn't inconvenience you too much and hopefully we can get them fixed for your soon'! They aren't broken! And surely its nothing to do with inconveniencing me, its about them.
-
The silly thing about all this is with the stress of bringing them home, they will probably end up with the sniffles again anyway :tired: I hope you can talk some sense into them, it seems pretty stupid they are delaying you taking them for another week :sneaky:
-
This rescue is clearly run by people who are more concerned with their power over decisions than they are over the care and homing of their cats - These people do not begin to understand the meaning of reason - I would be soooooooooooo tempted to give them their ancestry - how sad that that would be at the cost of a potentially loving home for these two gorgeous kitties ........ >:(
-
This is just completely ridiculous! :tired:
-
I've had a think about it and I'm going to go in tomorrow and explain the following:
: That I believe they would be better out of the drafty pen - I imagine the reception staff don't even know that the cat flap is propped open so I'll explain that too.
: That I have had 2 kitties before and have had to give them much worse than antibiotic pills (think pink gunky medicine requiring a towel cat roly poly to administer)
: That I have a heated cat bed at home and they would be able to go to the toilet without having to go out in the cold.
: That this weekends weather is supposed to be very cold and I am concerned about them being warm enough to aid recovery.
: That the girl in the cattery suggested last week that if they need another week on meds, this was something we could do at home.
: Show them the name, address and phone number of the vet we plan to use for them and explain that we will either bring them back next friday to see their vet or take them to see our vet.
If they don't see sense after all that then I honestly give up with them and I'll just have to wait until next week, when no doubt we will be in the same situation again.
-
:censored:
Oh, for heaven's sake!!!!
How about going in to the centre, asking to speak to the Manager/ess and requesting (politely, of course) that :
* someone show you how to do the meds so that you can take these cats home to a dedicated, warm, environment where they can get one-on-one attention and not have the stress of other cats and lots of people around them.
*Acknowledge that the move may not be ideal in the first instance but compared to living in a small pen with the busy bustle of the cattery around them, it will be nothing.
*Make a point of reminding them of your cat owning history, play up the fact that you have shown your loyalty and dedication to these little cats by being such a frequent visitor (therefore minimising the impact of taking them home)
* Let them know that you are frustrated that you are attempting to do the right thing by these cats, have provided them with all the (insane) information that they have requested, and point out that you taking them will free-up the pen for other needy cats. (rescue centres always have a waiting list of cats to be rehomed, don't they?!)
* Tell them again that you are happy to take the cats to YOUR vet, pointing out that this will save THEM money.
Remember: as hard as it is, remain calm and don't get cross (not that I am suggesting you will be but many people by this stage will be tempted to shout in frustration!).
And if all the above doesn't work, cry! :evillaugh:
-
I would change 'suggested' to 'said' and also point out the benefits of four consecutive days of both humans in the house over the Easter Break to ensure they are fully settled in their new home ... Good luck - and take the carry baskets. Only rather than talk to the volunteers, ask to speak to the person in charge ... >:(
-
Ha!
Cross posted!!
-
I agree with BC and Harna.
I don't know of any rescue who would keep the animals there just to give them meds. I don't get whats going on.
-
I like 'crying' :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
-
I like 'crying' :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
Crying works ..... crying got me Memphis :Luv:
-
:evillaugh: yeah, well, sometimes a few well-placed tears can get a job done.
(I learnt this from my daughter!!!) :Luv2:
-

-
(the thing is, my husband will say that my daughter learnt that trick from me!! :evillaugh: How else could I get the kitchen re-done, eh?! ;) )
-
Maybe all this is telling you to get Lesley's kittens :Luv: :Luv: If I was back in Portsmouth I'd definately be up for some :shify: catnapping.
-
Harna - thanks for those pointers - all very valid especially the fact that my taking them to my vet won't cost them any of that money that they struggle so much to get! I think the cats probably know me more than the rest of the staff now after all the time I've spent there, they are certainly perfectly happy cuddled up on my lap every time I go there and I'm sure the cattery staff who have seen this would happily back me up as they were all for me taking them this weekend.
I'm not the sort of person to get angry but depending on the kind of reply I get from the manager, I may well cry as I don't deal brilliantly with confrontation.
-

Probably should have done, and certainly would have if these 2 hadn't stolen my heart the way they have. I was watching scrubs last night and this line seems appropriate - 'Nothing in life that is worth having comes easily'
-
Bryony - take your other half with you - if you don't cope well with confrontation (and I am obviously hoping that it doesn't come to that!) it may well hope to have TWO voices of reason talking to the centre staff. And it will show them that you are both committed to these little cats . . . .
-

Too true. Ahh well stick with it and if you need purrs people to knock some sense into them I'm sure there will be a few volunteers.
-
I'm not the sort of person to get angry but depending on the kind of reply I get from the manager, I may well cry as I don't deal brilliantly with confrontation.
You could also say that you've set aside this whole weekend and following week to ensure you can devote all your time to the cats, cancelled all appointments, told friends not to call round etc etc - so would be an ideal time to have them HOME!
-
umm, and make sure they don't take you into a private area, do this in the public environment, so that they have to explain themselves in front of witnesses. I have found in the past that this is a very effective way of engaging with someone who is being unreasonable as they become aware that others are listening. I did it once when returning a pair of shoes that fell apart the first time I bought them. They lost several customers before they caved, but they did cave ... :evillaugh:
-
Lol, my OH isn't really a voice of reason, he will be with me but has been told to keep his mouth shut if possible. He gets a bit snappy if he's frustrated/annoyed. The last person to get it in the neck was the DHL woman because they accidently sent something he ordered to Exeter and he'd paid a fair bit for next day sat delivery.
I'm good at talking and getting my point accross but if they argue with me too much I might find it difficult, I admit I'm a lot better than I used to be though so I may be ok.
Setting aside everything else is in part true, I specificly turned down overtime work on the bank hols because I thought I would be settling them in and next week is perfect because OH isn't on shift til 1 and I will be home shortly after 4 each day so they will only be left for 3 hours on their own.
-
you see I wouldn't even mention the three hours they would be alone ....
-
you see I wouldn't even mention the three hours they would be alone ....
Me either ... they wouldn't be alone at all.
-
I wasn't going to, was just going to mention that due to our shifts next week there will be someone around to look after them and to take them to the vets on Friday.
-
EVEN BETTER Bryony, tell them you have taken THE WHOLE WEEK off work especially so you could see them settled in...
My god, I feel like strangling them, you must be ready to bash something.....
Take your other half and let him get annoyed!!!, not to shout, not to be rude but you need back up because someone is deffo on a serious power trip there!!! >:(
-
all my fingers and toes crossed for you this morning Bryony
-
:luck:
Good luck, Bryony. . . . hope you can give us some good news later . . . . .
(don't forget to take a little bag with a cut onion in it so that you can get really big, really fat tears . . . just in case you have to go with the 'last resort' plan .. . . ;) :evillaugh: )
-
Thinking of you Bryony. Hoping like anything that all goes well.
-
Fingers crossed, but I can see their reasoning, most rescues wont home cats if they are still under the care of the vet, you have to look at it from the point of view that their vet has probably recommended not homing them till they have finished their meds and he has given the OK, if they are moved and they get worse, it is their fault. The other scenario you mentioned is different, as they will be long term health issues, and it is a struggle to get people to adopt cats with existing health issues.
-
Yeah its all exciting when were getting our furbabes.....the wait seems forever...it wont be hun, your better off waiting till they are 100% or as near as can be.....Good things come to those who wait! ;)
-
Hope everything went well.
-
Well that was strange. They were quite happy with my reasoning and said I could collect them this afternoon and finish the meds at home as they seem absolutely fine today, no trouble breathing, running round like loonies and then one woman said that they wouldn't be able to go til they'd seen the vet again next friday and that was that, I guess she must have been the big boss woman! After that, everyone changed their tune and we had to settle with hopefully being able to have them next Fri afternoon, but only if the vet doesn't say the same thing again!
-

Oh for goodness sake! I started reading that and thought brilliant! they're coming home....then I read on! What a emotional rollercoaster you're on, you must be so frustrated to say the least.
-
at least you have identified the source of the powertrip. Have you found out who their vet is? I would be inclined to get in touch and see if you can swing a little influence from that side - along the lines of how much better it is for a sick cat to be part of a quiet warm, loving household than stuck in a draughty cattery having tablets rammed down its throat by power-hungry :censored:
-
No, I did ask what vet it was in case it was the same one I plan to use as its not far from the surgery but the woman just said it was an rspca vet that comes onsite a few days a week. It was annoying because I wasn't expecting them to be as understanding as they were. The girl in the cattery even said sometimes they do better at home but the vet decided they wanted to keep them there. Seemed no sense arguing about it after that because I'd only have been preaching to the coverted!
-
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I a getting angry for you!! I don't know where you find the patience!!!!
-
If it was my vets they would have sent the meds home with the cats :scared:
-
I can't really understand it either. If they got sick while I owned them, I'd take them home, give them meds and take them back to the vet at the end of the course, not sure why this is different. Maybe theres something I'm missing but the rest of the staff there could see what I was getting at.
-
and I also wonder, if they don't think you are reliable to maintain meds, and care for them while they are ill, why would they consider your a suitable adopter. If you are acceptable as an adopter, you should also be trusted to care for them .... Makes no sense whichever way you look at it >:(
-
Thats what I thought, I was so annoyed at how close I was to having them home today, it seems odd that the vet would insist that they stay rather than leaving it up to the judgement of the staff. If one or both of them had an open wound or something I could undrstand it better but the only care they need for these last remaining sneezes is warmth, rest and the meds! Now I have a weekend with nothing planned purposefully to care for them and nothing to do! Of course I will be visiting daily, but I get such odd looks when I turn up every day and stay for an hour or so each time!
-
It's really odd ...
Memphis got sent home with just his first vaccinations. I took him for the 2nd ones. Plus with my rabbit he needed a course of injections .. my vet showed me how to inject a rabbit and I went home with 3 days worth of injections for Mig which I did myself - instead of having to either keep him there for 3 days or me having to keep bringing him in. For this reason I don't get why they aren't allowing you to administer simple meds :scared:
I agree with everything BC said.
-
:what: I was expecting it to be next Tuesday at the latest! Grrr! now that is taking the :censored:
-
They are covering themselves, which is understandable, in case they got worse when rehomed - if you were a different kind of owner, and you adopted cats who were on a course of meds and they got worse, you might complain terribly, so they are only trying to make sure the vet is happy with them before homing them to avoid that kind of situation. I wouldnt home one of mine if they were on a course of meds, as i wont let females go till their stitches come out, just in case. And in one way, it is better on you, it gives you time to bond with them without them associating you with nasty meds.
-
With us it would depend on what was wrong, I sometimes think rescues hold on when in reality it may be in the little ones interest to be where there are not loads of other pets and that way they can get 1-1 attention. Of course the new owner would need means to be able to get to a vet quickly if necessary.
If we were lucky enough to fond a home for a cat that has been neutered/spayed we would re-home after the 3 day check, subject that all was well of course. As I feel that 1-1 attention is better than the attention a fosterer who has a number of cats can realistically give. If there are small children in the home we do wait until the stitches are out. I know before our branch split branch the Co-ordinator at the time thought that only she could look after the little ones properly. Of course she could not give the cats nearly as much attention as they would have if she had homed sooner.
-
This must be very upsetting for you Bryony. When we found Freddie at RSPCA, he needed serious dental treatment. I'm now beginning to think I was very lucky persuading them that I would take on responsibility for having that done and was therefore able to take him home as soon as long awaited HC was carried out.
Apart from perhaps stress of new home perhaps causing difficulties (our Tom gets sniffles when stressed), I really don't understand this wait. At least you now know they are coming to you, having cleared the HC, but how frustrating this all is esp when you could have spent long Easter weekend settling them in.
-
Some of you mentioned spay operations and stay times after these, I was told that if I was all cleared by the time they were spayed then they would be ready to go the next day!! Surely worse things could happen in that situation. They never had lampshades on after their spay so could have chewed their stiches out once they got home which I guess could have resulted in anything from just needing re-stiching to getting badly infected.
I explained that once I got them home, I was happy to take them to my vet and cover any charges myself, they have already spent a lot of their funds on the girls and their charge for adopting them is only £60 so doesn't even come close to covering whats been spent on them.
Anyway, theres nothing I can do now, so we're going to spend some time with them every day of the holiday and I'll see them wednesday lunchtime and hopefully pick them up Friday afternoon, can't come quickly enough though!!
-
We collect Spay kitties same day ;D
-
Im sure your capable of monitoring them but they sometimes they take a turn for the worse, and with it being a long weekend with no affordable vet services they probably have concerns about people putting off getting treatment til the tuesday.
Blanket policies are nothing but irritating for the genuine person but the less desiraable would have given up!
-
Must be frustrating for you Bryony but hang on in there, not long to go now and you can take them home.
-
  How were they today, Bryony?
-
They've been getting more and more hyperactive over the holiday, I guess that now they are better, they really want to be running around not cooped up in a pen, as soon as we open the door, they both fly out onto the floor and don't want to go back in the pen unless theres food involved! The girl in the cattery today said she couldn't see any reason why the vet would say no to us taking them this time as there are no sneezes at all and their appetite is back with a vengance!
-
Fingers crossed! ;)
-
Hmm - my mind instantly flicked to this thread this afternoon when my neighbour told me that they had been home-checked by the local RSPCA as they want to adopt following the sad loss of one of their cats recently.
Apparently, the homechecker walked in, walked down the hall, into the kitchen, turned to my neighbour and said "Right, you are approved!" Just like that!
The reason?
My neighbour has a cat-flap installed into his full-length glass double glazed back doors! Evidently, the homechecker believed that if you are prepared to pay about £200 to have this done, then you are dedicated to any cats that come your way so was happy to let them go ahead and choose a cat!
It seems an arbitrary way of doing things. doesn't it, when other people like Bryony have to get written permission from everyone in her town, 25 character references and has to sell her soul to the devil to get her little kits . . . . .
-
sounds to me like there may be a mutiny brewing among the staff. Have you considered taking the boxes with you every time you go, on the off chance dragon-lady is off work for the day? :evillaugh:
-
Lol, I did actually have the boxes with me on friday...
The lady Harna mentioned actually had a very similar homecheck experience to me, it was by far the easiest part. I think she'd already decided when I started talking about Casper and she saw the picture of my first cat, Lucy on the fireplace. I did mention the fact that I'd had to get the whole buildings approval and I reckon the fact that I'd done that probably sold me to her as a die hard cat lover! She didn't even look in the garden properly, only out the window!
When I go in this Friday, the boxes will be with me, there is nothing wrong with them now, no sniffs, no red noses, solid poos, absolutely no lack of energy or appetite! If the vet thinks they are still unfit for adoption I will be asking to speak to him/her before I leave for a full explaination. The cats have been in that pen for a month now and I'm sure it is needed for more cats to find a loving home, I imagine that was why the staff were hopeful that I would be able to take them last week!
-
Nearly there Bryony!
-
I know - tomorrow hopefully!!!! Everything is all ready for them at home, I've cat proofed all the sides and got rid of stuff they might eat/break etc and I've banished my poor peace lilly to the spare room with the hamster and the fishtank with the dodgy lid. That door is shut all the time except when I'm using the computer up there so thats where I'm keeping all the stuff I'd rather they didn't get at!
The laundry is in there too because I remember Casper as a kitten having great fun pulling all the clean washing off the drier rack!
-
Good luck for tomorrow, my cheeseplant now lives with my mom as it was constantly attacked when I got Leo and Larry last year
-
I have no problem with them attacking my plants really, but this particular one is poisonous as it is part of the lilly family so I didn't want them to have the oppotunity!
Downstairs in the hall I have a sortof mini palm tree thing, big long trunk about 80cm high or so and then a mop of curly leaves coming out of the top, it seems to be the most resiliant plant in the world and I expect they will probably use it as a new scratch post!
-
All the very best for tomorrow! Can't wait to hear all the news ;D
-
Hope the twins are home tomorrow
-
Good luck for tomorrow
-
Hope all goes well today Bryony
-
Good Luck for picking the kitty's up today! :wish:
-
Today's the day :yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy:
-
Thank you everyone - this morning is going to go so slowly while I wait to hear from them!! The car is all loaded up with their baskets and comfy blankets!
-
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What time are you picking them up?
-
Don't even know if I am yet - vet check is this morning. If he says they can go then I guess I will have to make another 'appointment' but I'm hoping for this afternoon since they were happy for them to go last Friday until they found out what the vet said.
-
No phone call yet and their phone is either engaged or no-one picks it up....
-
No phone call yet and their phone is either engaged or no-one picks it up....

There's still plenty of time left this afternoon.
-
Only a couple of hours, they close at 4 and they were meant to be calling late morning after the vet visit.
-

That's always been a problem with them. >:(
-
Only a couple of hours, they close at 4 and they were meant to be calling late morning after the vet visit.
Ohhhhhh ok well then that's just downright mean :scared: I'd be so tempted to go down in person.
-
Is it far?
I would just go there and see what is happening.
-
Lesley, I've never ever been able to get through to them on the phone. Once I resorted to sending them a fax explaining that I couldn't get through and that I just wanted to say my homecheck had been done. I got a bit of a stroppy callback a couple of hours later!
I'd go in person but I've seen people do that before and they get told to go away because they havn't booked an appointment to collect their cat!
It wouldn't surprise me if they have just called my home phone and left a message despite the fact that I gave them my work number and mobile number and they wrote both down in their diary along with the memo to call me.

Nothing would surprise me with them anymore. I thought they were a bit "iffy" before but after the treatment you have received I am surprised they ever re-home any animals.
-
I can't understand it either. Their system makes very little sense from the point of view of the animals and they seem to be impossible to contact. Not to mention the way the reception staff behave towards potential adopters, especially the one who left the 'I hope this isn't an inconvenience for you and we'll get them fixed as soon as possible' message on my answerphone when the girls got ill!
I can't wait for the experience to be over and have my little ones home!
Lesley - did you want me to drop that cage round sometime this wkend?
-
This week end is a bit awkward cos I'm working one of the days, but not sure which one yet. Would next weekend be okay with you?
-
Yup, thats fine by me!
Phones still engaged... looks like if I don't hear by 3, I'll have to go down there, tho 98% sure they will tell me I can't have them today due to lack of 'appointment'! At least I could book one for tomorrow morning!
-
Good luck hun. Let us know how it goes! I'll keep my fingers crossed.
x
-
The Canterbury Massiff are planing a beano not a million miles away from there next week, and if they haven't coughed up these puds by then, will we come a sort it! :boxer: :duel: :box: :tongue 3: to the lot of them!!
-
Grr, finally got through and the phone rang for about 2 mins with no-one answering!
Giving up now and leaving work at 3 to go down there, carry cages in hand!
Lol @ Pinkbear!
-
Fingers crossed for you Bryony.
Really hope you leave there loaded up with those 2 cute babies :Luv:
-
I think its highly unlikely, but if they pull the 'you need to call and book an appointment' I'm not having that, because its not like I didn't try!
-
Well I'm back - no kittens, but on the plus side, the vet has cleared them and they are finally ours at 11.45 tomorrow!
-
Well I'm back - no kittens, but on the plus side, the vet has cleared them and they are finally ours at 11.45 tomorrow!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
At long last!!! Wooooooo. Bet you are really chuffed.
-
Oh thank goodness!
Roll on tomorrow!
-
Yeh, its taken long enough!! They weren't pleased when I put them back in the pen this afternoon, I tried telling them it was the last time I'd have to do it but they didn't understand!
-
Have you got everything for them ... litter, food, bowls lol I know you have that gorgeous bed, the litter box and the all important empty cardboard box
-
Yup, everything is ready, litter box is all set up, I have a water bowl (big ceramic one) and lots of plastic double feeders and a kitty placemat set out in the kitchen. My collars from kittycollars arrives yesterday (I know how some people feel about collars but we won't get into that). Their bed is now up in our bedroom and the wonderful box is still in the lounge with all their toys! The box will have to be a makeshift cat tree until I make a definite decision on which one to buy them!
As far as food goes, they are currently on RC dry which I can buy from the centre tomorrow. I plan on slowly changing them onto high meat content wet complete food but I figured it was best for them to have what they were used to for now. I got the same litter (wooden pellet type) as well because they are used to that now.
They were wormed and de-fleaed when they came in but that was nearly a month ago now. What is the best flea treatment to use (we used frontline on casper but he now has stronghold) and how often will we need to worm them?
-
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, sounds like everything is sorted :Luv:
There are a lot of threads about de-fleaing and worming. I personally use Frontline and Drontal and worming is every couple of months. More if they go out. You also reminded me that my lot are due for it :evillaugh:
-
SOOOOOOOOOO pleased
I'm working until 5 pm at CP tomorrow so will have to wait for update!!!!
-
Woo Hoo :wow: Roll on tomorrow ;D
-
Finally! :innocent:
Bryony, as soon as those puds are safely locked in the car, please tell them - from me - that they are as effective at cat rehoming as a spaghetti umbrella is during a monsoon! >:(
-
Finally! :innocent:
Bryony, as soon as those puds are safely locked in the car, please tell them - from me - that they are as effective at cat rehoming as a spaghetti umbrella is during a monsoon! >:(
 I love that comparison!!! Rest assured I will be following up my experience with them. At the moment the most important thing is getting my little ones home!
-
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's really about time! i bet you are so pleased to FINALLY get a slot to take them. ;D
-
1145 tomorrow yesssssssssssssssssssss and not a second too early
I like stronghold myself cos it does earmites too, and mine get wormed once a year by vet at annual MOt but they are not kiddies like yours. three of them have a spot on wormer and Misa has a sweetie cos he is so innocent, and goes gulp and looks at me as if to say, I doont think I knowed what I swallowed. I am OK ;D
-
you realise of course that we will want to see pictures of you decanting these cats from their carriers on their arrival    make sure they give you the right ones ;)
-
Glad they are finally coming to you.
-
At last, and the reason why you couldn't take them today, because you hadn't made an appointment? >:(
Anyway glad their almost home look forward to seeing the pictures ;D
-
Yup, once I'd found out from the girl in the cattery whether the vet had cleared them (the reception woman just looked blankly at me when I asked), I went back and said they had been cleared to go by the vets, she looked blankly at me again and said 'so are you adopting them then'. :tired:
Once we'd got past that and I'd produced my reservation sheet and homecheck sheet, I said I'd just go get the carriers (there was no-one else there at this point). Was told, no you can't do that, you'll have to beek an appointment for tomorrow.
Anyone would think they didn't want a free pen...
-
so are these people running a rescue or a home for retired nazi prison camp guards?
-
By contrast, we have been known to rehome non-problem cats with known backgrounds within 4 days of the initial enquiry from the adoptor... :tired:
-
Pinkbear, far more sensible I'd say. The poor things will have been there very nearly a month as they came in on 1st march!
-
I rang about my last cat after seeing him advertised on catchat and had been house checked and given cat within 24hrs. This was because they were a small rescue and desperate for space and also because I was a good meowy to Leo and Lawrence :Luv2:
-

Gosh Bryony you've been through the mill with this havent you? I can't believe that you were there, cat baskets at the ready, the cats had been passed by the vet, and yet they still wouldnt let you take them - unbelievable!
Anyway, good luck for tomorrow
-
This is just so sad.
My Kocka went to the Bridge on the Saturday, I emailed Cp on Sunday, they got back to me the same day. The home checker came tues or wed and then drove me to the Gower to look at the cats and she drove me back.
On the Thursday I had an email to say, although I had not mentioned anything, that Misa and Sasa could be homed together if I was interested even though they had never met. Their rehoming ;ady said she thought they might never be best friends but would tollerate each other.
On Friday she came to drive me back again and I saw a few more cats but she drove me home with Misa and Sasa. ;D They are very best friends.
Two or three weeks later she came again and drove me and Misa to vets for his second jab and then drove me back again.
So a Cp about 15 miles or more from me can do it, other rescues on here can do it, yet somewhere with so many animals doesnt need to free up a pen!
Pictures tomorrow Bryony and we gonna celebrate the ginger twins :wow:
-
I won't be around much tomorrow in the day so just wanted to say good luck for tomorrow and get that camera ready! :sneaky:
-
Ooo did you manage to get a good night's sleep? Well today is the well awaited day! ;D
-
Good luck today Bryony
-
Fingers crossed, Bryony ;D
-
Best of luck for today :wow:
-
You must be so excited ;D
Good luck for later and lots of pics please :naughty:
-
Good luck, and everyone, please bear in mind we dont know why this rescue have been like this - it is incredibly busy for all rescues at the moment, and they might have a lack of volunteers. Just because other rescues can home that quick doesn't mean they all should - very few have paid staff and do rely on people doing things voluntarily. And while these cats may have been there longer than necessary (although I wouldnt let them go till the vet had OK'd it either), if this rescue weren't here, these cats may have still been on the streets.
-
so have they arrived yet? We want to knoooooooooooooow!!
Am so excited for you, and really looking forward to those gorgeous ginger babies settling into their forever home!
-
She must be too busy taking photos Jo :naughty:
Can't wait to see these gorgeous gingers :Luv2:
-
Come on Bryony, once the girls have settled in you need to get snapping :pic:
-
The ginger ninjas have arrived!!
Not the best pictures, but my Digi SLR is in the car and its raining and i'm a wuss!
They seem perfectly settled already, they have explored a few rooms of the house but not all of them. They havn't paid much attention at all to the fish except discovering that the top of the large tank is warm and therefore a good place to sleep. They love their bed, although I think its less because its warm and more because all their catnip/valerian toys were in it until this morning so it smells gooood! So far their personalities are pretty different, Mitzie is quieter and has spent a lot of time sitting on my lap, Nana is the troublemaker and has tightroped walked the hall hand rail and tried to climb the laundry airer after playing with all the socks!
They need new names now, Simon agreed that maybe Cheatara was a little silly, so we want 2 names that go well together really.
Pics!

I'm thinking Ginger and Meggs as they look like double trouble to me!! They seem to have made themselves right at home :Luv:
-
Worth the wait :Luv: What absolute stunners, as for that tummy :drool; I can't believe how relaxed and settled they look so quickly ;D
-
I guess its partly because of how often we visited, every other day on average for 4 weeks!!
-
Thinking of names now... How about on the ginger ninja / teenage mutant ninja turtles theme, variations of:
Main characters
* Leonardo (Blue) —
* Raphael (Red) —
* Michelangelo (Orange) —
* Donatello (Purple) —
* Master Splinter —
* April O'Neil —
* Shredder —
* Casey Jones —
I'm thinking Casey & Leo
-
I love casey and leo, but they are both girls! (V unusual to have 2 girl gingers I know!)
-
Awww they are both beautiful :Luv2: :Luv2:
Useless with names :tired: the good people on Purrs named the boys :naughty:
-
I love casey and leo, but they are both girls! (V unusual to have 2 girl gingers I know!)
I know they're girls :) I went to school with a female Casey and I think Leo is unisex, maybe Leah instead though if it's not? My Tiggy was a ginger girl, they really are the best :)
-
I quite like leah and casey, would be good to have a tomboy name for nana because she's a little troublemaker!
-
Well done Bryony ;D
Bet you are glad you hung in there ;D
They are gorgeous :Luv2:
-
They look gorgeous. I have had a female cat called CAsey, she was pure black.
-
They are home yessssssssssssssssss and they look wonderful and real little
troublemakers darlings ;D
Now remember we dont want any moaning now about how your chair aquires sctratch marks or what they do to the laundrey etc etc
-
Sooooo pleased! They are scrummy :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, excellant :Luv: :Luv:
They are so scrummy, so glad you have them home ... now enjoy!!
-
wwww, they are gorgeous :Luv: Looks like they've made themselves totally at home already :Luv: :Luv:
-
Lol, they can scratch whatever they like so long as it belongs to us, we don't have anything expensive! As for the laundry, its in the computer/hamster/poisonous lilly room so they can only come in here when I'm on the computer and can watch them!
-
I'm so pleased you finally got them Bryony. They are so gorgeous and look so at home already. Dying to know what names you settle on
-
The Ginger girls are a joy we have one Lunar as she is way out there and for 2 months we thought she was a boy - she is a feral girl and leads our Ginger mob - Bailey, Phoenix, Sailor and Lynx who is her full brother but a cuddle bum whereby Miss Lunar still hisses and will use claws but is a poppet really under all the hissing
The photo shows Lunar wearing her heart stripes for all to see that she has a wonderful nature really!

-
They look like they're setting in really well - it must be wonderful to have them finally home :Luv2:
-
well done, the girls look like they've always lived there. May you have many happy times together.
-
They've settled far quicker than I'd have imagined, spent a lot of time on our laps and both sat on OH's parents for a while when they came over last night! They were a bit of a pain last night, settled down on the bed fine and then jumped all over us at 5.30! I've got mitzie sat on my knee at the moment!
Still undecided on names. I like the idea of maybe naming them after sweeties:
skittle
rolo
munchie
smartie
etc
OH keeps thinking of beers to name them after!!!!
I also still like Leah and Casey but OH didn't seem that impressed! He's just been calling them green and purple after their collar colours!
-
Skittle and Smartie would be nice.
-
Aw Byrony they are gorgeous....I bet you chuffed to bits! :Luv: :Luv:
-
They are definitely all settled now! Took some pictures of them flopped out on the sofa yesterday so I'll post those tonight. We've decided they will have to stay outside when we're sleeping for now as we didn't get much sleep sat night and OH was very stroppy yesterday! Last night we put a episode of Lost on the upstairs tv and let them sit on the bed while we were watching it, (one on OH's chest and the other half under the duvet under my arm!) then we put their bed just outside the door when we wanted to sleep and they seemed happy enough curling up in it and didn't meow at the door at all.
Still thinking about names and like these at the moment:
Casey
Leah
Amber
Skittle
Chilli
Wispa
I'm thinking maybe Amber for Mitzie, the darker one who is more chilled out and soppy, and Skittle for Nana, the lighter one who is a total livewire and keeps trying to climb everything!
I've been thinking about the insurance for both of them and wondering whether the illness they had whilst at the rescue is going to affect it. I was under the impression that they just had the sniffles as no-one ever said otherwise but when I picked them up there seemed to be some confusion as to whether they had been vaccinated (which they have) and the girl from the cattery mentioned cat flu. I didn't think much of it at the time as they are better now, but having read things about cat flu, I'm more concerned now.
-
They are definitely all settled now! Still thinking about names and like these at the moment:
Chilli
Like Chilli !
-
Reference the insurance, I would forget any illness they just had and tell insurance company they are rescues with no history , end of story but do it quick cos there is a 14 day period before insurance kicks in . :shify:
I like Chilli and Amber ;D How about Chilli and Paprika
-
I like Chilli and Amber, too . . . . . :Luv2: . . . . . but then who am I to comment as I am finding it hard enough to name my own two red cats!
-
just to be provocative, how about Saffron (saffie for short). Also an allusion to the orange/ginger colouring, and quite a feminine name - chilli and saffron .......... ;D
-
I like Amber and Saffron. Wouldn't be allowed to recommend Chilli as my friends dog is called Chili.
-
I like all of those names: Chilli, Saffron, Paprika, Cayenne...
The new Spice Girls ;)
-
The New Spice Girls. :evillaugh: I love that C.
-
Very good Christine ;D
Ummmmm sorrry Bryony you will have to get another pair of gingers to complete the group
-
Lol, I'm having enough trouble keeping up with these 2, after covering my lap when I wanted dinner and looking put out when I moved them, they are now flying about like crazy things. They keep attacking each other - should I be worried about it? I've never had more than one cat so I don't know what kind of behavior to expect. Theres no growling or hissing and they don't seem to imflict any damage so I think they are just playing but it looks a bit violent. They are currently
As for names, I talked to OH and I think its going to be Amber and Chilli, ran all the names past him and those were the ones he liked.
-
Play fights can look prettt rough some times but it is normally all in good fun. When it gets a bit rough and one squeals they normally break up. They are probably just enjoying their freedom at last.
-
Love the names Chilli and Amber..... :Luv: :Luv:
-

I think they are definitely making the most of their freedom. They were doing laps last night, down the hallway, down the stairs, halfway back up again, through the railings, back along the hall and round the lounge, usually ending up in the zooplus box that I kept for them!
I was looking through the paperwork they came with and found the vets notes. Looks like Amber was pregnant when they did her spay. The more I think about the state they were in when they came in (very thin, pregnant and later catching possible catflu), the less I believe the old owners story that she emigrated. Doesn't seem like they were well cared for before!
-
Looks like Amber was pregnant when they did her spay.
OMG if thats the case it's awful. Far too young :(
-
I know, I hate to think what would have happened if they hadn't arrived at the centre when they did. She is far too tiny to have had to go through that! Plus the fact that they were both so skinny, I doubt if she would even have survived!
-
Hi Bryony
Really pleased they are home and sounds like they are finally happy and settled....only just over 3 weeks until my little ones
are picked and come home. I cant wait!!
For some reason I am unable to see your pictures of amber and chilli??? is it my computer? dying to nosey at them, I love ginger cats!!!
xx
-
I can still see them, do you get an error message or anything?
-
just little red boxes and with little crosses in
I want to see the kittys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Thats a bit odd, no-one else has posted to say whether they can see them or not. They are just hosted on photobucket so they should be ok.
-
Are you viewing it from work? If so your work may be blocking images from photobucket which is not uncommon. Or you have a firewall setting too high. Depends .. cant you see other peoples photos?
-
It is my work laptop....and they do block some things, well 3G does.....mmmmmmmmmm rubbish!!!!
Better do some work instead ha ha!!
-
Hi Lollylou the reason could be you haven't posted on the threads enough. I know you have to make some many posts before you can see some pics on here, but can't remember how many :-[ senior moment :evillaugh:
Try making some more posts and see if you can see the pics ;D
-
You have to be an adult cat (20 posts?) to see uploaded pictures. But photobucket posted in threads can be viewed by anyone even non members. I discovered this when I joined.
-
I love them :)
It's so different seeing two ginger girls!
-
I know, thats what I thought. I had assumed that they were both boys when we first saw them before I read their admission sheets. I think its something like 75% of gingers are boys.
-
And thanks to the influx of ginger tabbies on this board I REALLLLLLLY want a ginger tabby as my next kitty.
-
Lol, kitty envy.
I always wanted a tabby and white because of my friends beautiful socrates, also wanted a black/black and white because of 2 of my cats who have now passed on to the bridge. These girls just stole my heart when I walked past their pen!
-
Lol, kitty envy.
:innocent: :innocent: :innocent:
*ahem* any recent piccies of these two?
-
When I get home there should be. can't post piccies from work!
-
I dont mean to steal your thread but here's my family's ginger :) He's a boy though hehe
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/zenithbliss/random/DSC00044.jpg)
-
:drool; He's scrumptious Zenith, what's his name?
-
just little red boxes and with little crosses in
I want to see the kittys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Try right clicking on the red boxes and select open in new window....that may work? ;)
-
:drool; He's scrumptious Zenith, what's his name?
Ted - short for teddy bear :shy:
You can't really tell in that picture but as a lunatic kitten we think he broke his nose running into the coffee table, so he looks roman :)
I guess I should start my own thread about my animals :)
-
I guess I should start my own thread about my animals :)
>Zenith.....yes please! :ok:
-
hi Bryony!
Just found out (internets been playing up  >:() Yay, whoopee, *jumps around in happiness* i'm so pleased for you, it gives me hope that i'll get there myself. Just been offered a chance to rehome by two separate people (a lilac point siamese from one) and another lady who has 3 cats to rehome-early days yet on that one- can't seems to get my reply email to send :censored: So fingers crossed!
-
Zenith - your boy is absolutely beautiful!
Koscha - Its definitely worth the wait, but I guess you just have to get used to waiting. You'll get there in the end though!
More pictures as requested!

Scouting out a nice meal, shame about the fortress!

So one is spotty and the other stripey ;D
They are gorgeous and so pleased to be out of that cage ;D
-
Yup, Amber has quite dark, thick stripes with really cute little spiral shapes on her sides. Chilli has some pale thin stripes but she is mostly spotty. Makes it a lot easier to tell them apart!

Bryony, the pix are beautiful. The cats seem to have settled so well and look so content and happy. Well done to you for making their transition so wonderful.

They're gorgeous, and most definitely worth the wait :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Thanks everyone - and yes, clare, definitely worth the wait!
They are still putting on weight and eat like they havn't had food in ages. I have to be careful about how much I give them as they will eat everything on offer in about 5 minutes and I don't think they would stop if they got full. I think this could be something to do with their past home but I don't know enough about it really, just how skinny they were when I first saw them.
They also do a wierd thing with towels, I noticed them doing it in the rescue and I thought its just a comfort thing, I sat down after a shower with a towel round me and they both jumped up and started doing it again. What they will do is knead the towel with their paws and claws and lick it, the towel they had in the rescue centre was very soggy at one corner.

:evillaugh: Memph licks towels, but only after they've been used. He also ate like a horse when he came home .. he went from 2 meals a day (3 if I was around) to 4 every day ... but then he was an awful long smaller and younger than your two .. who are GORGEOUS. They are soooooooooooo cute. And I love the colours of their collars (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/Bauersqg/Odds/wub.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/Bauersqg/Odds/wub.gif)

Took me ages to choose those collar colours, I actually had a pic of them pulled up on the computer next the the kittycollars website to see which would go best with ginger!!
With the food, I couldn't remember how much casper ate when he was that age, so I have been using the amounts on the back of the packets. They always finish it all off and ask for more though!

Misa has a sucky towel on his table but he will suck my shirt too. ;D
-
Aww, there's two pretty ladies right there. :)
By the way, I love that DIY-ed hamster cage. It looks really secure and not too cramped like a lot of ready made ones.
-
Thanks, we made it because none of the ones in the pet shop looked big and I didn't want one with bars as they are harder to keep clean. Didn't take us too long to make that cage and didn't cost too much either. The hamster (called mouse!) seems to love it too!
