Post by: Leanne on March 19, 2008, 15:39:11 PM
Is what the vets are proposing to give Jess should this blocked bladder thing not resolve, does anyone have any experience of it?

Thanks

I know in humans a small dose is good for an anti spasmodic and muscle relax....in larger dose it is used for depression!  ;)

Dont know about in cats though sorry!

I've used amitriptyline myself for muscle relief (not knowing it was a mild anti depressant. Boy, did I crash when I ran out!) I've never heard of it being used for a blocked bladder in cats, though.

In humans doses of 60mg are used for depression but in doses of 10mg (for adults) it is used for migraines etc (I used to take it for that) so I guess it could help with bladder probs , but I think something like a low dose of diazepam would work better (from personal experience with migraines). Not heard of it used in animals but a lot of human drugs get used in animals in smaller doses.

Hope this helps

My Vet prescribed this for one of my cats after she had repeated attacks of cystitis. He said he found it very helpful in cases that were of " unknown " origin and it worked very well with Meg. She was on it for a few weeks but I'm afraid I can't remember how long as this was a few years ago. The dose was small enough not to cause any drowsiness and she was as bright as a button whilst taking it.

My doctor gave me this when i said i had problems sleeping ????  ( probaly 4 cats on and off me and the bed all night though )
It didn''t really work anyway , but never heard of it being used for animals - but Smartie had some asthma tablets (steroids) that were almost the same as i had for one of my health problems !

Yes I've heard of it being used in cases of recurring cystitis. Didnt need it with Ben because he only blocked the once, and never had cystitis again after that episode. Hope it will help Jess.

I also thought I knew the name - about 3 years ago, I got the hiccups and it went on for days. It sounds funny but it was unbearable and I had to go to the doctor in the end and that's what I was given. I had forgotten all about it

Yep I've had it low dose for a bladder problem several years ago - worked a treat and boy did I sleep deeply   Only problem was I slept so deeply that I wasn't waking up!

It's described as a panacea here

I have posted on your other thread - Roz had issues with Jet, she might be able to help you with what relaxants he had, cos I Think there were a few. The threads might also still be on CC.
