My Oliver occasionally pants like a dog when he gets excited playing :-: It doesn't last long, just for a moment or two usually, but last night he was doing it big time, again in short sets (that last a few seconds) but repeatedly. He wasn't doing anything extraordinary either, just a normal horse play. It is rather funny but I have never seen or heard of a cat panting, I just want to check to make sure if he doesn't have any respiratory problem or getting too heavy for a high NRG activity... (as I said before he is rather chunky for a lanky built cat, weighs 6,2kg, but not anywhere near "obese").
Is this normal? Any of your cats do this too?

if it following prolonged energetic play I wouldn't be concerned, but if it is at times not associated with any immediately apparent cause I would be off to the vet, for an in-case checkup - some cardiac probs exhibit as breathlessness, as well as lung conditions. AndOliver is far too cute to risk!

Memphis does this, after having a crazy session with his Da Bird .... I try to stop play before he gets to this point though.

Archie pants after a big play session. Our vet has checked him over twice and says he is fine and no need to worry.
Its probably as well to get it checked if you are worried but I am sure everytning will be ok.

Yes it always happens right after he has been hurling himself in the air and stampeding all about the flat. Like you Den I usually quit when this happens but yesterday he still wanted and insisted on continuing even after he started panting!! I will monitor him a little more closely and if the panting increases I will give our vet a ring...

Xanthe does too after running round like a loon! She gets back to normal quite quickly, I think it is just an exercise thing!

Mosi panted when he was younger, as did Jaffa. As long as it's just in response to strenuous exercise, then it's normal.

In a word - yes! See below! If Oliver was doing it at any other time than after a hard platytime session then I would get it checked out.

Panting or painting (Claire!!! :rofl:) cat - new one on me - I think Oliver has been watching you panting when you do your workout Licia and now he's copying you. :rofl:

Thanks again everyone, and Helen, thanks for sharing your own experience! I always thought Riley and Oliver had a lot in common in their behaviours and personalities, and I saw from the clip the little Riley did indeed pant just like Oliver does! :) Bless your heart I would have been worried out of my wits if I had to go through what you did, and thank god he was all clear!! Ollie is a picture of health in any which way you look at him, perhaps I should teach him the correct breathing technique while exercising :innocent:
