Title: prayers please
Post by: bren on February 26, 2008, 17:51:39 PM
yesterday morning my 16 year old tortie and white( rescued by us when she was an abused semi ferral kitten, and still very independant and spikey! ) was unable to eat and making this dreadful grinding nise with her mouth most of the time i looked in her mouth and saw blood at the back of her throat. I took her to the vet who injected her wiTh steroid and antibiotic but were unable to see in her mouth as it took 3 of us to keep her under control that was with a towel too this is not unusual . though the vet managed to see some soreness at the back of her mouth as she was screaming at her. We booked her in for a sedation for this morning if there was no improvement, this morning she seemed a lot better in herself though she hadn't eaten or drunk anything, so took her to vet, it was a different one today who took her into the back room where a crush cage was waiting but amazingly didn't have to use it we decided that a further antibiotic injection which lasts for two weeks and a long acting steroid injection would be given after the vet managed to look in her mouth and saw a decayed broken back tooth. She is booked in for Thursday morn if things have not improved but as she is 16 the risks with sedation are high. I am totally devastated, and have this awful feeling things are not good, she has tried eating today some soft food I got from the vet and has managed little bits but there are obvious problems with eating for her though she has been grooming herself today and drinking water. I thing she will probably end up going in on thursday I am so worried so please send her your well wishes and prayers.  :'(

I wish you all the best on Thursday but if there is a tooth problem this may all be sorted out  without a problem

To be honest I would have had her sedated for them to look at her properly, the correct sedation should be very safe even at 16yrs. I dont like a cat to be that stressed while being examined.

Sasa my semi-feral had to be sedated just before Christmas cos she bit the vet  while examining her .........and she had not been starved or anything cos she was an emergency. The vet said the sedation would not be a problem cos it would cause her to vomit her food up if she had eaten, she is only around 10yrs though.

She will feel so much better with that tooth gone

I would have bloods run before hand and have her on fluids throughout, it bumps the price up but makes it much easier for them to cope.

Definately on fluids and am surprised if the vet did not mention this to you.

Definitely agree, my old boy had a dental at about 18.5 - pre-op bloods, drip throughout, rapinovet anaesthetic etc and he bounced back just fine.  In fact he was better afterwards than before by some margin - those teeth had obviously been bothering him for some time!

Good luck, hope she is ok xx

My Dragan had a dental at 16 and another one at 17. He had a heart murmur and chronic pancreatitis. The first one it took him a while to recover from the anaesthetic they didn't have him on a drip.  The second one with his new vet he did have the drip and he came out of it very quickly and was much happier for having his teeth done.  Try not to worry to much (silly thing to say I know) but speak to your vet about the drip and which anaesthetic they will use.  Fingers crossed it will be fine

hiya, well things have been better for Amber she is now not making the grating/grinding noise and is eating pate style cat food, as been out in the garden for a little whille so we have put off the sedation/anesthetic to see how she goes on, but will go ahead straight away if things deteriate again or if I become worried about her so fingers crossed. I am being extra vigilant and spoiling her to bits, will keep you posted  :thanks: x
