Title: Buster is losing his fight.
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on February 16, 2008, 18:34:39 PM
Sadly on Thursday we had the news that we have  long been dreading, Buster the President of Paws Inn is terminally ill. Buster age 22  has seen the vet monthly for injections for over 10 years and somehow we felt as if, and hoped, he would be around forever. I wont be asking the Good Lord for a life saving miracle but I am praying that when his time comes it is peaceful and with dignity.
Buster has made so many friends over the years and has a great deal of admirers on this forum .
At present Buster is comfortable and with his girlfriends Tula and Anastasia and was able to enjoy the Applaws that his favourite Aunty Claire brought for his tea.
For those who haven`t had the pleasure of meeting this old charmer here`s his story

Teresa, I am in tears, but this came to me from somewhere, I know not where...

You saved my life. You rescued me from hell
and brought me to a haven here on earth.
Soon golden angels will tend to my needs:
be sure I'll tell them who loved me so well.

I am so sorry T  :'(  He is a very lucky boy to have had you love and care for him all these years. He's an absolutely fantastic boy and I love him to bits. He is the only cat I have met that is older than me and he has such a look of wisdom in his eyes but otherwise doesn't look his age at all, a very special boy.

Please would you give him a gentle cuddle from me. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers

Yes I remembered "meeting" Buster the handsome chap on Teresa's page, too sad that there comes a time to go even for him...  :'(
I am glad though that he got to enjoy a good life being loved and cared for at least for the second part of his life.  Hope he will keep on enjoying it to the very end.
My loving thoughts will be with him and you.

What an incredible story and what a trooper Buster has been for so long. I hope and pray that he can live his remaining time with you in peace and dignity. Sounds like he's had a wonderful life with you caring so much for him, after a horrendous beginning, not that that is much comfort to you right now. He's a lovely boy and I send you both a big hug

Thank you all for your kind words. The picture on Busters story was taken about 9 months ago and he looks very different today with over a kilogram less of him to cuddle. We are hoping that he will last a few more weeks but his decline is obvious on a daily basis now so all we can do is take each day as it comes, and of course every day is a bonus.

Buster has eaten his breakfast, its seems after living on prescription diet for over 10 years he has developed a taste for Applaws. the old charmer sleeps with Anastasia ( his other girlfriend Tula is giving him a wide berth,She probably knows); this morning Olly decided he wanted to get in on the act and gently washed Busters head. Buster is so lucky to have such wonderful friends  both furry and humam.

Looks like Auntie Claire will need to bring some more Applaws with her on Saturday or President Buster won't let me in the house or give me a cuddle.  I wonder if he might like to try the Chicken and Cheese variety?  Garcia says he would be honoured to share his hoard with Buster and that he thinks the one with cheese is definitely the best.

On a serious note - I am glad that he is eating something.

Cuddles and lots of love as always to him.

Oh Teresa I am so sorry to have read this just now,  To echo what many others have said you have been truly blessed to have had his company for so long and he has been extremely fortunate to have had you and your family/friends to care for and love him so much.

I have always adored that photo of him on the staircase, his eyes are really a picture into his soul I think  :Luv:

We shall pray he slips peacefully into the next world when he feels ready and meantime you enjoy many happy shared moments

In many ways Buster is at a great advantage, many poorly elderly cats often need prescription food, in Busters case hes endured over 10 years of lower urinary tract support and now he can have anything he likes; no wonder my boy is eating albeit little and often. He usually likes to go out in the garden for 5 minutes morning and afternoon but thankfully today he decided not to bother.
Going into vets in morning and will ask vet to go over test results again as something is niggling me.

What were the bloods suggesting T ?  anything in particular or a generalised decline ?

Eating little and often is prob a good thing too for his digestive system and may mean he's getting more benefit of the nutrition he is ingesting.

Asked Andy for a second opinion this morning.( Buster saw rebecca last week). Andy checked Busters results and said they were too bizarre to be true; he requested I take Buster straight in to repeat the tests which are being sent to an external laboratory as Andy feels the machine has struggled with Busters results. Andy has examined Buster and repeated the tests, his gut feeling is that Buster is dying but he asks that I wait until the results from the new tests come back and then we will go through things thoroughly. i`ve a glimmer of hope in my heart but my head says not. I just explained to a friend that I feel like a yo yo on a rollercoaster.

Lynne the bloods were indicative of secondarys already being present.

Just had Andy vet on phone with Busters new results on a Sunday afternoon the last thing I expected. There is still a slight hope.
I havent seen results yet but Andy says many of the Bizarre ones are improved, he says unfortunately they are not improved enough to rule out that Buster is dealing with tumours so he is going to do an abdominal scan on him tomorrow morning.
So maybe our lad is not as past his sell by date as the vets first put him; Thank God I didnt consider letting him go.I am just so overwhelmed and relieved and full of hope at the minute my brain is in the clouds and I refuse to worry about scan until tomorrow.

But I am going to pray for a miracle.

Just back from vet with Buster; scan has shown tumour in right kidney but Andy says its impossible to tell whether its primary or secondary without opening him up - thats not an option in both vets opinion and mine, at least we are now certain just hoping its a slow growing primary.
Buster was a true gentleman for the vets and managed without sedation; I`m so proud of my boy even if he does have a bald sticky tummy.
Buster is happy to be home again and enjoyed a little of Aunty Claires applaws.

Sorry the news wasnt what we'd hoped.  However you might now feel a little better somehow knowing exactly what the problem is after the scan rather than a list of possiblilitys and we can all hope that it is slow growing.

Just want to say that Buster may be 22 but up to now he has never been old, and has always made the most of his kittenhood. :)

Buster sends his thanks for all the kisses and cuddles and good wishes from everyone.

Ellie good to see you back but no tears please Buster would prefer you to think of him with the big happy smile you had when you first met him.

Buster will never be the kitten he was but he is still enjoying his life and secretly his overweight girlfriend Anastasia is enjoying the fact that Buster is having so many meals for her to help polish off.

Buster is doing ok thanks Lynn, he is picky with his food but eating lots of tiny amounts often. Our boy is a fighter and since April last year has been fighting for water so I am sure his huge water intake will stand him in good stead. Apart from the extra meals we have decided to treat him as normal for as long as possible.

I totally missed this thread when it was first posted and didn't know about Buster until last weekend.

Just wanted to pass on our best wishes for the gorgeously distinguished man and I hope he has many more happy days, weeks and hopefully months at Paws Inn. I had forgotten that he is 22, only two years younger than me (nearly exactly!) and another December baby. I will also say that he does not look his age!

Sending our love (and lots of it!) :blow kiss: xxxx

How is Buster, as well as possible I hope.

Hes doing OK thank you.

I know this sounds really awful but it would be good if we could let this thread disappear; it is easier to cope with things if I can treat our boy as normal. I promise to post when their is news. :thanks:
