Title: Fascinated by running water
Post by: tigerbaby on February 15, 2008, 19:59:02 PM
Recently, Jameson has shown a BIG interest in...our shower! He will sit and watch, for however long it takes - this morning he sat and watched, with big curious eyes for nearly 20 minutes. On purpose, I moved the shower head around for him to see the water move and splash around and boy, his eyes grew bigger and bigger, and he was rocking back and forward as if he was about to jump in but kept changing his mind.
When I was finished, he walked up to the bath and jumped in and sniffed around so I turned the cold water tap on and he was looking at, and putting his paw in the running water for ages, trying to work it out.
Same when I brush my teeth, he will sit on the corner of the bath and just watch for ages, and once I'm done he'll jump in the sink and sniff around, being all curious and inquisitive.

I have read many other threads about cats being intrigued by water, but not until very recently I've discovered my cat is also very fascinated! It's very sweet (apart from when I find him drinking manky bathwater under the non-slip bath mat)

Maybe you could treat him to a drinkwell fountain - my Kylie loves hers. They are 15% off at the moment + if you order by midnight tonight, there is an additional 7.5% off http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php?PHPSESSID=ni1olauepl8a8qf0gqhveudag2&topic=12220.msg207862#new

PS - If you do get one, order through one of the rescue links and they will get 5% as well  ;D

Cat fountain - will check it out - is that something to keep outdoors? Sounds interesting! I'm sure he would love one, maybe I'll buy one for his birthday in April !

They are indoor fountains

They are a bit pricey but do last - the last one lasted 3 years. I recently bought a platinum one which runs really quietly.

Wow - they look really cool indeed. I wish I could try before I buy - our problem with Jameson is that he doesn't drink 'water-flavored' water. I have only ever seen him drink water from flowerpots/muddy puddles/bathroom floor, so I make sure he gets his fluids by mixing water in his wet food. He loves the gravy and will drink all of it.
I have tried normal tap water, bottled water, boiled-then-cooled water but nothing works.
I like the idea of the fountain but would be a gamble money-wise incase he would ignore it.

Often the additives in tap water turn cats off, so you can try standing the water for a few days in a bottle, or in the fridge, before serving (after bringing back to room temp obviously) as that will get rid of the chemical smell that comes from treatment processes and from any additives like flouride ... Well, we get flouridated water in Oz, at any rate ...

This is Oliver's latest entertainment, too.

He never seemed to be fazed by water either so I tried this to see how he react, boy he was amused, now he can't get enough of it.  He makes an awful lot of mess splashing and leaving wet paws everywhere so just a few minutes a day... but he does enjoy it so joyfully getting his little face, head and paws all wet!!  Come summer I am seriously considering letting him have a dip in a cool water. :innocent:

We bought one of the drinkwell indoor fountains due to my one foster cat splashing water everywhere (in a library full of books that's not a good thing"!).

It's worked very well, we have it on a hardwood floor so I had to put a towel under it as it does make a bit of noise. It also gets louder the less water that's in it so we keep it topped up.

The Platinum one is vrtually silent - worth the extra cost I think

I LOVE catsinsinks.com, just brilliant (www.kittenwar.com has always been one I liked too!). One of mine loves a running tap, she drinks from it and plays with it trying to catch the water, get's very wet and just doesn't seem to care at all.
