Title: female cat starting peeing on carpets
Post by: maccat on February 09, 2008, 22:42:23 PM
we have a 9 month old Abyssinian/part moggie.  she knows how to use a litter tray but has been for the past few months starting randomly peeing and pooing around the house.  we have tried (vet advice) putting orange peel where she has pissed and also have a hormone spray.  nothing is working why and how can we stop this.  the cat is under a year so we keep them in in the evening so they are outside at their own leisure during the day but still althought they access outside pee inside

any thoughts appreciated

Is she neutered? Has the vet done any tests to see if she has cystitis?

What are you using to clean the "wee" up? What litter tray are you using?  ;)

Hi Maccat it would be nice to know a lot more about her circumstances. How many cat trays have you got. How many cats. Do they get on. How long have you had them. Any details on their lives before they came to you.  Could she be stressed. Is she just peeing and pooing in the same places as she can still smell the soiled areas from the previous time. It is vital that all soiled areas are thoroughly cleaned with the right stuff or she will keep going back.  Difficult to know what else to ask without more background information.

Certainly need to rule out medical problems although not sure cystitis causes peeing and pooing?

when i say we' i actually mean my sisters cats.  here is all the background.

we have 2 of them, had them since they were 9 weeks old and they came litter trained. they are sisters and they came from my finances brothers house - so fab background and no issues with any of the kittens (we in fact saw them growup - hence why little sister has 2)
we use a larger litter tray with the pellets, just the one which is cleaned out regularly  - it stays in the kitchen and they do use it.
cats love each other and get on really well
both neutered and yes the cat has been tested and no signs of any urine infection
the cat in question does use the litter tray
the peeing and pooing is random.. no specific places
we use those floor cleaners (1001 spray) to clean it up and then have a hormone/feramone spray from the vet to get rid of the smell.  as i say its random where she does it again.

now my sister is 7.5 months pregnant, so there has been changes to the house such as arrival of all baby gear and the upstairs rooms are being renovated.

when the cat does this they focus on cleaning up the mess and the cat runs away.  the thing is one of them is doing it and the other isn't.

any help much appreciated, as with a new baby on the way we need to get the cats under control x bless their little cottons.

here is a piccie aswell x

Hi Maccat! she looks just like my Smidgen, where did she come from? anywhere near Chester? (sorry, complete non-sequiteur I know, but she is a dead ringer for my boy, same age and all and his litter mates were all very similar).

Amanda gave me some of his baby pix, but if you have more I would love to see them :Luv: I adore my boy and he has settled in well - to the point of palling up with the dog. If they have similar personalities then maybe you need to get some interactive toys - Smidgen hurls himself at anything moving, with complete disregard for personal safety!!

Have posted some more pix on the other thread - the likeness is remarkable - but the whole litter is actually quite similar - I was hard-pressed to choose a kitten from the photos, but you had nabbed my first choice!!! Smidgen is definitely the pick of the litter by my book, but am guessing you feel the same about your sister's babes too!

The link I am posting is a long read but may be worthwhile in case your sister recognises any traits indicating a problem which could be rectified (e.g. there is mention of wood pellets for litter being a problem with some cats and renovation of house and changes getting ready for baby may be causing disruption with the cats)

In addition, cleaning agents I have used

Biological washing powder (never used it except for Freddie's peeing spree) or,
Simple Solution from Pets at Home or
Urine Off (www.urine-off.co.uk).

Hope that helps

Well I never BC, small world and all that

Just a few ideas which might help.

Move the litter tray from the kitchen, especially if you feed the cat in the kitchen. Cats won't toilet where they eat.

Have a litter tray per cat and keep it very clean - remove the poop each time they use it.

Use dilute biological washing powder to clean where the cat wees/poos.

Try a different litter type.

Buy some lemongrass essential oil and put ONE drop on the spot peed or pooped on after thorough cleaning. This is more effective than orange peel.

If you have a cat flap, make sure no strange cats are coming in. Pooing is a very determined territorial marking.

Also, ensure your pregnant sister wears gloves when she handles cat litter.

Hope this helps.

I have read somewhere, goodness knows where, that some cats can sense a new baby on the way and in addition to the ideas already given , which are the right ones, she maybe stressed by the imminent arrival of the baby.

Do you give her loads of attention and play sessions cos she may feel she is not getting enough attention too.

Sorry I know its not your cat but sisters.

thanks gill... little sister is putting everything into place.  she is also buying some cheap baby toys which will be for the cats.

it appears there is a big black male cat prowling their house and has already attacked one of the cats, so as someone said below it could be a territory thing.

will update soon on progress - thanks everyone x

Possibly or maybe a different type of litter to dig in...
