Title: Thoughts on Foofoo's deafness
Post by: candyshandy on February 06, 2008, 20:41:42 PM
Some of you may know that she had an ear polyp removed in January. Ever since then she is totally deaf. The hospital said that she had poor hearing before the op and this may be why she has lost her hearing. I had to stop giving her the ear drops as this may be causing the deafness ie. all the fluid.

It has now been 2 weeks since I stopped the drops and she is still deaf.  :(

She is due back at the hospital next week and will have the camera in her ears and another hearing test.

I wasn't given any warning that she could lose her hearing before the op and the vet has indicated that she cannot think of any reason why she has subsequently lost it.

I have no evidence to back this up but I think they could have damaged her ears during the op. Is there anything I should be asking when I take her in next week?

Thanks

It is possible her ear drum has ruptured, either as a result of the operation or possibly even from you inserting the neck of the ear-drops bottle too far into the ear canal. Otherwise can not see any reason for it to have happened. ..

I thought that too BC but the vet said both of her ear drums were ruptured before the op  :(

oh, well she was deaf before the op then. There is no way she was not deaf if she had ruptured eardrums ...

Took Foofoo today.

She has limited hearing and its worse in one ear.  They think this will improve once the ear drum heals, but even so her hearing is at the level where she would hear me talking but not whispering.

She has been discharged but I'm still not convinced that the ear disease has been fully investigated so I'm going to speak to my own vet and ask her advice.

She is still really woosy but has managed to eat a pouch of food - I had to elevate it though on a few dvds :)

I dont know how old Foofoo is but Franta can hardly hear at all. I would not be willing to put him through an op unless there was an obvious cause and there isnt.

She's a lot better thanks.  Her hearing has returned but it isn't great.  She can definitely hear some things which is a huge improvement  :)
