Title: Pip and pop
Post by: MBll on February 02, 2008, 19:44:07 PM
I have removed the link & added the email address if anyone can help?

Is there anyone in the area that can help?

surrogate mother for 2 day old kitten desperately needed

Hi, does anyone have a pregnant queen as our cat gave birth to kittens early yesterday morning and sadly died last night leaving a kitten with no mother. We would obviously want the kitten back after the crucial period is passed.

Just received this back from the lady who posted.  I've never heard of feeding them cow's milk and sugar

Hi thanks for your response, she had 4 kittens and 3 died, mum seemed
very dosy and still very fat so we took her to the PDSA. According to
the vet after examination she still had kittens inside her but she
believed them to be stuck so the vet decided to operate. 2 hours later
we got a phone call that the cat was still on the operating table and
that they had found more kittens but they were all dead, that her
kidneys had virtually packed in and that she had a serious infection.
According to the vet we could have got her back but she would have had
no milk and would have been terminally ill. We were told by the vet at
the PDSA to feed the kitten cows milk and sugar. The kitten is
thriving but we feel a surrogate mother gives her a better chance at
life.

it's an old trick, but I would have thought only in the short term until they got proper kitten formula... I mean you can get it from the vets nowadays, but way back when the cowsmilk/sugar was often your only option...

It's surprising what you learn but I always thought cow's milk was bad for them  :tired:

I think the sugar helps them digest it, but like i said, these days there are special formulas, so am surprised the vet did not recommend one.

I could be wrong peeps... but I've a funny idea that this is the kitten that has just landed at my door!  ????

Sorry I've not been on the forum in a few days guys.  I've been rushed off my feet with a mother with complications during birth and still now!!! (been a really long few days with her)  and my best friend has been rushed into hospital with terminal cancer SO not the best of weeks   :'(

Anyhoo.. if it is this kitten that I have here which I think it is judging by the story he is safe and sound for now.  :) I'll be rearing him for now and see how he gets on.  The lady does genuinely care for the little one and has tried her best.  Sadly the constant mixed messages she's been getting have her in a tizz!

Yes he is safe and sound and a good wee thing really.    ;D   First chance at the correct kitten formula and you'd think he hadn't been fed for a month!  lol  bless him.

he is doing well and is asleep just now.  Here is a wee pic I took last night when he came in.  Apparently he is persian as both the mum and dad were.  Poor wee soul is the last survivng kitten from the litter but he is a wee fighter so fingers crossed he can pull it off.  I'll certainly give him all I can just hope that will suffice in the end! :)

thanks lesley

we'll just have to see how it goes but as I said to the lady last night I'll pull out all the stops for him as I would any cat we have here in our care.   Unfortunately he wasn't able to suckle from his mother at all following birth so he hasn't received any of the colustrum or goodness from mum.

all fingers crossed here anyways.   will keep you posted tho.

Does the colostrum have to be taken as soon as the kitten is born?

I have seen these Colustrum & vitamin kits http://www.nutrecare.co.uk/latest_detail.asp?prod_id=1498&id=141&grpid=1498&msg=&offset=480

Or item 797 on here for 100grams of colustrum which I guess can be added to Cimicat or similar?
http://www.smyleepets.co.uk/SmyleeMain/vb-product.asp?CategoryID=46

They also have various dry kitten milks which I would imagine are better than Cimicat?

I will keep you all updated on this tiny tots progress.  He's doing grand today and seems to be more restful this afternoon and his tummy is far less bloated than it was.  He's a good wee eater now bless him!

Angie - dynamic duo are doing grand (she says as it nears the 8th!!)  Just been mega hectic here as I have another mum with kittens who had complications, c-section and isn't the maternal type and is making a lot of extra work for me.  Not to mention she has very very little milk so having to hand feed that lot too to top up.  Not sure if this little lot will make it but I'll do my best for them :)

She wants him back RR.  I do think she genuinely cares for him and called last night to see how he was and sounded ever so relived to know he was still alive.

I do hope that this time round tho that she gets him neutered sooner rather than later and will of course be advising her on options etc.  Perhaps not a perfect outcome but I believe he will be loved and cared for if he can make it through.

(why am I up at 3am.. mmmm... bottles and hot water bottles!  ;)   sadly we also lost another of the wee kittens off the mum earlier as she has lay on it and suffocated / crushed it along with another sibling.   Other sibling alive for now but not looking good.  Needless to say I've had enough of mum and taken the babies away for now.)

well the wee man is doing fine today.  Still vocal and feeding well.  He also has a room mate.

We lost the other kitten that mum crushed through the night so I have taken away her last remaining kitten and it gives the wee ginger boy some company too with someone to cuddle into.

will try and get a couple of pics later for you all.

H1 Hunnies, i'm gonna split the thread and pop the discussion over to the rescue section so you can continue the it if you want to or pm each other, whichever you wish. It's good to see you able to dissuss your diff views in Rescue as i am sure each rescue can all work in different ways to help the cats. It's interesting for us non rescues peeps to learn of these things but also respect if you prefer to keep it to pm's.  :Luv:

Discussion thread moved to here in Rescue room  :) http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php?topic=11923.0

hi folks

Both are holding their own and feeding well.  Each day they survive is a step in the right direction we always hope.   The improvement in the white one (Pop) since having the company of of Pip has been great and her colouration is improving slowly and her strength gaining with the extra exercise and stimulation.

Not much else to say for now really... as they are still SOOO young but they appear to be happy little tikes.

Pic today! :)

Well I have some bad news folks I'm afraid.  We lost little Pip. :'(

Although happy and moving about OK-ish yesterday he was getting less agile overnight and eventually gave up his wee fight for life this morning after a blockage in his bowel (we believe) caused a rupture when it cleared suddenly.  It could also be purely down to damage to his intestines due to the array of different (and dreadful) substances being put down his wee throat the first couple of days or to the over aggressive stimulation which left the wee fella raw at the back end and may have caused an infection to go into the gut which the anti biotics couldn't clear in time.     He really didn't have the best of starts at all and its a miracle he made it to 8 days in all honesty.

We have done all that we could for the wee fella including having him seen by our vet a couple of days ago after being concerned that his bloated tummy and toilet problems may cause complications although limited as to what can be done for a kitten so young and small.

We are saddened but know we have done everything we could for little Pip would despite his short time in this world has left his mark.  We now have to concentrate on pop.

One thing we are very sure of is that the death of Pip is in NO WAY related to Pop, who continues to do well for now but who also has an extremely long long way to go before we could happily say he is in a safe zone.   :scared:

We are continuing to keep our fingers crossed for Pop and hope that he can continue his fight for life.  :shy:

Sarah, I am so, so sorry.  As I said before, these little babes can bring such big heartbreak for such little mites.  I know you did everything possible for him and these babes have such a sad start to life the odds are always stacked against them.  We must all take heart for the victories, for they are due to our hard work, the sad, sad losses are more often than not due to events before we ever get to them.

My thoughts are with you and Pop, continue to thrive little man. :Luv: :Luv:

Oh Sarah I am so sorry  :'(  :'(  It's amazing how much of a mark they can make on the world around them in only 8 days isn't it. As you said you did everything you could and you made sure his time was filled with love. I have got everything crossed that little Pop goes from strength to strength and I hope he's not feeling too lonely. Has he got a little alarm clock in with him? (just thinking the tick tock is vaguely similar to a heartbeat)

Just a wee update folks.  Pop is now 11 days old and no sign of the eyes cracking open yet so my original suspicions of him being a few days premature have been confirmed.  :shy:

Sadly the wee smout has an eye infection so keeping an eye on that and treating with antibiotics.  Besides that he is perky and happy and holding his own.   ;D

All fingers, toes, and paws are well and truly crossed here for the wee darling who is now purring his wee heart out.  ;)   we'll just have to wait and see what this week holds in store for him!

I've not been reading this thread for fear of reading...well, what I read really. Sarah, you did an amazing job and I'm sure Pip was aware of the love you showed him despite his tender age.

:RIP: Pip.

Is Pop the little guy who was on the free site? Hope he's continuing to thrive.
Title: Re: Pip and pop
Post by: madkittyrescue on February 11, 2008, 22:11:54 PM
thanks JS.

No, pip was the little one from the free site who I was amazed made it to 8 days !!  bless his little heart. :'(

Pop is from another litter who's litter mates all died for various reasons (mainly mum) and was about 4 days premature we reckon at least.  He is certainly holding his own and is fighting on and full of cattitude already at only 11 days old!!!   lol

We have absolutely everything crossed for Pop at the moment and are hoping we are on top of the eye infection.  He is feeding well, in fact very well.  so all we can do is to continue to nurse him and hope that he can make it through.  He still has a very long way to go yet but we will certainly do our best for the little smout.  :)

His eyes opened late last night so that was wonderful and another step in the right direction.  His eye infection is settling down now which is good news.

He is sleeping soundly at the moment... in fact... rather like a brick!!   out for the count and completely burst!  He has such a hard life you know!

Will post piccies later.  Hubby got one late last night when his eyes just opened so it was so cute.

Hi Guys,

Long overdue I know... here is a wee update on Pop.

He continues to do well and is a right cheeky monkey.  Full of attitude (typical for hand rears for us) and very determined.  Bless him.  Hubby is taking to calling him Herbie at the moment as in the car as I seem to have went through a phase of calling him my little 'love bug'   Don't ask... cos I just don't know where that came from!

Anyhoo... the important bit is a couple of pics.  He's about 6 weeks now and the following first 2 pics were taken when he was about 4 weeks and the last taken about a week ago.

Hope you like... he is so cute you could just eat him!  lol

He's a lilac point bless him... but very odd as he has curly coat!  mmm.... either way though he is absolutely scrummy.  Look just like his mum!  awww bless ;)

We have noticed that his bad eye is slightly smaller than his other... but hopefully this will correct itself.  If not though it certainly doesn't hinder him in any way as he is a right little torag!  lol

A very long time in coming... here is an update on Pop!  (sorry guys!)

He has turned out to be a right handful... that we can tell you and full of life.  Now 9 weeks of age he is into everything and has us on our toes to say the least! lol

Here are a few pics taken over the last couple of weeks.. not sure if they really show how chilled and comical he is... but they make us smile!  ;D

Enjoy!

Herbie's (Pops) fave place... his carrier for transit in car!  Chilled or what!

Chillin Time 2

Such a hard life it is being a cat you know!  (He actually went to sleep in this position... really funny at the time)

health & Vitality... what's that!  lol ;)

We've had a wee lull to catch up on things so had a little time to myself today.  Mind you just back from getting 3 kittens that were stuck in a wall space!!  little darlings.. will post pics later.

Herbie is an absolute gem and will really miss him when he goes.  I know it'llbe hard to see him go but thankfully he is only just moving a few miles down the road and  I know the new slave will keep me posted and let me see him from time to time :D

You all know what it's like.. 1 goes out and another 5 come in!  bless!
Title: Re: Pip and pop AKA Herbie NOW IN NEW HOME
Post by: madkittyrescue on May 18, 2008, 21:42:55 PM
Well folks, that's it, Herbie has now gone off to his new home after a 'wee' glitch in taking a reaction to his first vaccine, which he has almost fully recovered from and doing much better.

He seems to be making himself at home in his new abode and we all miss him terribly here!    Hopefully I will have some pics of him in his new home very soon for you all.

Still can't quite believe he made it... but he did... the little fighter.  :)
