Title: Up-date on Tarka - Best News of the year so far
Post by: LesleyW on January 30, 2008, 10:41:05 AM
Well I thought it was time we had some good news, seeing it has been such a sad start to the year.

As you may have read, Tarka was changed to RC Sensitivity control and seemed to be doing well.  Unfortunately, he did relapse a bit and was "drippy" again.

After reading several sites regarding diarrhoea and irritiable bowsel disease, slippery elm seemed to be suggested as a good herbal supplement so I though I would give it a go, along with some food that Mark sourced, Eagle Pack holistic food.

After just 24 hours Tarka was dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.  I didn't build my hopes up too much cos I thought it might just be a coincidence but we are now one week on and Tarka spent the first night of his seven month life outside of his crate last night and no marks. :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

His poo is still not firm, more of a coarse mustard consistency  but his bottom is clean. When he goes to toilet he is passing more in one go than he ever used to but he does not then leave marks everywhere afterwards.

Both Mike and I are gobsmacked at this "miracle". I don't know where it is the slippery elm or the food but he will be staying on both for the time being.  The only time he is being crated now is when the others get their wet meal so that he doesn't nick it and then once it is finished he comes out again.

He still doesn't like being groomed at the back end so there's a bit more dry matted fur to remove but he looks so much better and I'm sure he is feeling much better.  I don't think he believed it last night when I didn't put him away and when I got up early this morning I'm sure he was in his crate even though it was open - probably feeling a bit lost :Luv2:

Will try to take some photos of him later - if he will stay still long enough - he loves his new found freedom and runs around like a loon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark for tracing the food and everyone else for their help and support with little Tarka. :thanks: :thanks:

Great news Lesley  ;D

Alice is doing well on the food too  ;D- She isn't eating it exclusively but is having some every day. Like Tarka, her poo is better but not perfect. I went up to see her at lunchtime and was worried that she hadn't been for a poo as the stench usually greets me on the way up. I spent some time in the room and went to check the tray and there was a huge poo but not smelly  :evillaugh: - Again, like Tarka, her poo is firmer but not perfect. Just keeping fingers crossed.

I'm glad Tarka has his freedom

Yes Mark, I must confess the smell seems to be reducing.  I am trying to keep Tarka on the food exclusively.  I got the Anchovy one for him and I got some of the tins as well.  I dip his slippery elm tablet in a portion of salmon from the tin and he eats it as good as gold.  He is supposed to have 1/2 tablet three times daily but he is so small still I give it to him twice a day.

Desley, I think the slippery elm has alot to do with Tarka's remarkable turnaround.  That was the first thing I started him on, approximately 24 hours before the food, and within 12 hours there seemed to be an improvement.  At the time, I thought it was a fluke but with the amazing results I now think it did start to kick in that quick so I would highly recommend it.

I have seen it recommended on so many sites regarding anything to do with digestion but when I asked my old vet he just smirked and said he thought it was "harmless but useless"

I must admit I've been converted to it.  Tarka is still doing incredibly well and I've even given him some more of the holistic wet food and still no runs.  He is leading a near normal life with the other cats after months of being shut away from them.  The only time he goes in my "Angel" pen now is when the others have their wet food.  I am hoping to get some more of the holistic wet food and if I can convert the upstairs cats to it Tarka will be able to be out 24/7.

Took some photos of him the other night but haven't got the right software on the laptop to re-size them, will try again over the weekend.

Rolo seems to be normal, but he does poo outside now, so not too easy to check - his is more smelly than runny now i have figured out what food he can eat. I do have slippery elm bark powder from the vet though, she wasn't sure about it for digestion issues (she gave it to me for PEbbles), but said it couldnt do any harm.
Do you have Microsoft Office on your laptop Lesley?

I don't know why but I haven't tried it with Alice yet but i will as from tomorrow. I have already been messing with her food putting glucomasine powder in it - she is not impressed  :evillaugh:

There is a element called Microsoft OFfice Picture MAnager through Office Tools - very well hidden piece of software, but also very good and easy to use - resizes, compresses, etc, so you should be able to do them on your laptop.

Lesley go to Start button, Programs, Microsoft Office, Office Tools. It should be there.

If you have tried that and its not there, what version of Office are you using? Its usually on the 2003 versions up or maybe Office XP versions? Can't remember. It replaced Photo Editor from previous versions.

There are plenty of free image resizers available - for PC anyway http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm - this one looks pretty good. As for mac, its a pain in the neck as I have to make sure the image is in iPhoto, then export it and resize while it is being exported - There is probably another way but I don't know how to do it
