Title: Are we doing the right thing !??
Post by: betsy on January 11, 2008, 15:04:54 PM
Feeling like a bad mummy !  Thomas started going out about 2 weeks ago, since then we have put a cat flap on the back door so that he can come and go as he pleases.  However he just isnt into using the catflap and will sit outside meowing until i open the flap for him .. so today ive thought enough is enough ! hes gone outside -with me opening the catflap for him !  and hes now meowing to come back in,  ive talked to him through the catflap to try and make him come in himself but he just sits their, so ive not let him in yet.  Am i awful?  he just needs to learn to push it open himself.  Aahhhhhhhhh :censored:

could you try putting sardines or something the otherside?

could you poke the end of a lure toy through, then drag it inside - maybe he would chase / play with it and come through as well? :shify: a bit tricksy, but it might work.... ;)
good luck!

Go outside - shut the door and pop him through the flap. Give it a prod frist so that he knows it opens, then pick him up and po p him through.

I did this with Zebedee when we first had his little garden house, now he's in and out like crazy.

This is quite similar to aonther post we had and have been responding to although I cannot find it at present for various reasons which really annoy me!!!!!!

anyway, obviously he shouldn't be let out unsupervised until you are sure he can use the flap - in case he needs to get in quickly.

propping the flap open with something (I use string and tape) to leave it partially open to give a head start.
If it is too cold in this weather to do this, then get a big box , cut a flap in one side and play with him until he gets the idea in the warmth of your living room - or else wait till the spring.

I dont think you should leave him out there in this weather and unsupervised. Even if he is playing you up this will not help.

Angie is right we were trying to help on another thread and think you should stop trying to rush hime, this will only happen at his apeed not yours.

If you held the flap open for him to go out he is ceratinly not going to come back in by himself.
