Title: Minnie Mouser
Post by: berties mum on January 10, 2008, 01:02:27 AM
You might be wondering what I'm still doing up at this time on a school night  :evillaugh:  The answer is that OH and I have just spent the best part of an hour retrieving Minnie's latest prey from inside the workings of the fridge, where the poor lil field mouse ran when she dropped him onto the kitchen floor.  The poor thing has a partially skinned tail (which I hope Minnie did to him, not us moving the fridge with him underneath )  Anyway, he is now inside a biscuit barrel eating some crumbs (only thing to hand deep enough for him to not jump back out!) while an indignant Minnie wants to go back inside to catch more!

We're guessing if he's eating and running around, he's safe to go back outside even with his poorly tail?  Minnie has never brought me anything quite so alive before so we're not sure what to do!

If he is eating and seems Ok , I would put him outside as far from house as possible somewhehere sheltered in loggrass or somethinh, hopefully he will find his way home.

OH has just taken him down to some grassy wasteland right at the end of our estate - probably where Minxie caught him in the first place, but she's inside for the night now, whether she likes it or not!  She's been in and out all night and hasn't settled at all - I told OH I thought she was on the trail of something and I was right!  You should have seen how fast he moved - and Minnie is BLIND!  The mind boggles

My goodness! She caught him even though she's blind?! :wow: If she is that good when blind, there wouldn't be a living creature safe if she could see! :evillaugh: Hope the wee moosie finds his way home ok. As to the tail thing - it happened to one of my gerbils when I was a kid - the vet said just leave it, and sure enough, the wee "bald" bit kind of dried up, and the gerbil just nipped it off one day. Didn't seem to bother him in the least - he just ended up with a shortened tail.

:thanks: I feel better about the tail now - I have been feeling awful because I'm sure we scraped his tail shifting the fridge while he was underneath it  :(  I read on another website that we did do the right thing though, because if they are eating and running, they will usually survive, and are more likely to die of the shock of a trip to the vet.

Yep, Minnie Minx is blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other - the most amazing part being that her vision is worst when she looks downwards.  Some days she can't see her dinner in a bowl in front of her so I have to hold her head and move it downwards so she can find the food - so how she caught little mousey is beyond me!  She's quite a killing machine though - we've had plenty of dead birds and mice since we adopted her in June!
