PETITION TO SAVE TUSKER
Tusker (or Dustbin as he is also known), is the resident elephant at Charara National Park at the Kariba Park in Zimbabwe . With his peaceful antics of raiding bins and braais he is a legend and a great favorite of tourists and locals alike. We don't want to lose him.
There has been an attempt to relocate Tusker in the past which didn%u2019t quite go according to plan and when Johnny Rodrigues (Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force) went to National Parks Headquarters and told them what had transpired, they showed compassion for Tusker and agreed that he can remain in Kariba.
They won't shoot him as long as he doesn't hurt anyone; however, there are conditions to this reprieve. It was agreed that the reason Tusker has become so habituated to humans is because people feed the wild animals. There are signs in every National Park in the country, including Kariba, prohibiting the feeding of wild animals but there are people who ignore this.
Tusker, through no fault of his own has become used to people and he has learnt that where humans are present, he will find food. We are extremely concerned about this because we have heard several stories of people feeding him and by feeding him; those people are inadvertently condemning him to death. Although he has never killed anyone, he has been classified as a "problem animal".
After his recent behavior over the 2007 Charara New Years weekend it has been decided that Tusker should be shot. This tragic event will be taking place on the 7th January, 2008.
Thus we must get as many people around the owrld to sign this petition to the Zimbabwe wildlife authorities as possible in as short a s possible time.
I cannot stress too much how urgent this is. Also please forward the link of this petition page to as many friends as you know in order to possibly save Tusker's life.
contact Jude at safaritalk@iinet. net.au for assistance.
Lets do it people!

I have fired off a fairly strongly worded email to them for their use. This is a terrible end for an animal whose behaviour was induced solely by inappropriate exposure to human behaviour. That poor animals last few hours were torture.
-
I tried to sign but it said it was closed, now I know why!
How on earth could they be allowed to do that? It said the number of signatures needed was 1,500 and there were 1,877. How have they been allowed to do this?
Why has this happened anyway because he was taking food from people?
For being tame he was killed? I just dont get what he done wrong.
RIP Tusker, even the kindness of man kills. x
-
please also note that they are asking that anyone who feels strongly about this should post on their forum:

Please do so if you have the time - perhaps it will make the Zimbabwean government realise the strength of international feeling. My post is already up there.
-
Whats the point, would they listen, no I dont think so!
It is disgusting what they have done to that poor animal.
What was the point of setting a petition up if they had planned to murder him a day early.
Im :censored: disgusted!!!!
-
What utter :censored: :censored: I really can't believe they've done that, may they hang their heads in shame :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:
:RIP: Big fella, xxx

the people who started the petition are not the people who shot him, sending strong messages to the government is a sound idea. If we just sit and mutter to ourselves we are doing nothing to change matters. It won't save Tusker, obviously, but it may change their approach in the future.

heartbreaking

Why has this happened anyway because he was taking food from people?
Tusker could've unfortunately caused someone a real injury by being over zealous about getting food. However, I tend to agree. Had humans not been ignorant idiots and ignored the signs and fed him anyway, this wouldn't have happened. I went to a wildlife reserve and was very tempted to feed the monkeys - when it was explained why I couldn't, I didn't. I felt angry that even after the explanation some people still went ahead and fed them anyway, socialising them to the point them became a nuisance and actually hurt people when food wasn't handed over.
EDIT: BC, have joined the other forum. As you said, posting on here won't be noticed by the people in charge there - maybe posting on there will.
-
Thanks JS, I sent my original reponse direct to their email and they responded immediately, so they are clearly geared up for action - hopefully as I said in my post, lessons can be learned from this tragedy and a new approach adopted that is more animal-oriented.
-
It won't let me post on the topic! :-: And what email addy do I use?
-
Hi JS, it is a forum just like this one - you have to join to be able to post. It doesn't take that long. I will PM the email addy to you.
-
I joined the safaritalk one, is that not the right one? It still wouldn't let me post after I'd joined! With regards to the email addy, is the email address of someone who allowed this happen or a supporter of the animals rights?
-
email addy is someone who was trying very hard to stop it and was reduced to tears when he heard the news. He was much heartened by my comments and support and has responded personally.
