Saw this on CC ... can anyone help?
Hi I have a 6 month old kitten that I have hand reared since he was 8 days old (he was in a neighbours garden and the ferral mother disappeared). We live in rural France, ferral cats everywhere, we have 24 that we have rescued that live in an outbuilding with a run on top of the house cats. He seemed to be doing ok, then in October he got a virus, chest infection, sticky eyes etc. Vet gave him antibiotics and he seemed to get better. In December he had his first vaccination and the next morning his bed was wet and he urinated as he walked and didn't seem to know he was doing it. Since then he has become increasingly weak in his back legs, he can move them but he falls down as he tries to walk. Vet is at a loss, has tested for FIV (we have an adult with FIV) and FLV but both negative. He is now on a course of doxycycline, vet says he thinks it might be chlamydia. Does anyone have any ideas. We are keeping him in a pen (when he is not asleep on my shoulder)to keep him separate from the others.

Poor little Geiger has taken a turn for the worse .. any advice?
Unfortunately he (his name is Geiger) doesn't seem to be getting any better and has had what I can only describe as a fit twice in the last 2 days. He yowls really pitifully, goes stiff and shakes, it's really frightening (for both of us). He is back to the vet on Monday as he will have finished the antibiotics and I am beginning to wonder how much more intervention I should sanction. Would it be better to let him go, even though it would break my heart. As it is I steel myself every morning to find that he has gone in the night, but he is still fighting. It just seems so hopeless.

It could also be something entirely different. You say that the feral mum had disappeared and left him behind. Perhaps that was for a reason??? They very oftne know long before we do that something is wrong with their young... and we have had it happen many a time especially with ferals.
They will leave their young and move the rest that are stronger or healthy or try to kill the one that is the weakest or leave it as prey for predators and move the rest to safety. Perhaps this little one has some form of brain damage or has not developed properly. You never know. It could be that the fits are completely unrelated to the Chlamydia or the vaccination.
Also just out of curiosity. WHen the little one took the chest infection / respitory problems did the vet use Baytril to treat at all?? Just ask our of curiosity as we have had a couple of kittens that when this scenario has happened have been left with fitting and weakness in limbs as well as lack of co-ordination. Even in small doses it can cause such problems.
Don't know if this helps much but there may not be much that can be done I'm afriad Sam. Good luck in passing this on tho... hope the little one finds peace one way or another soon xx :)

This sounds similar to Jake and his fits which I've done a thread on but he's having a shunt test tomorrow to see if that's causing them. I hope they manage to get little Geiger sorted and they find out what's wrong with him :hug:

I`m so sorry to hear about your poor cat, he doesn`t sound at all well. Christine (Blip) PM`ed me to see if i had any ideas as to what may be wrong with him. Has your vet done a full blood profile at all as this may help. The only other things i can think of are Toxoplasmosis or a liver shunt which is where there is a problem with the blood supply to the liver that causes neurological signs such as those you have mentioned. The best thing would be for him to have an MRI and i know these can be expensive. I have never heard of Chlamydia to cause fitting but thats not to say that it`s not possible. What has the vet suggested trying next and also have they done a swab from his eyes to test for Chlamydia? It may be that he got the chest infection and runny eyes because he has some other underlying disease that is making him have a low immune system. This may also explain why he appeared to have a reaction to his vaccination.
I know that it is very unpleasant watching a pet you love fitting but when he does this he will not be aware of what his happening so just keep him as calm as possible as he recovers from them and i really hope you start to get some answers soon.

I've had the results back for Jake and his was a liver shunt, maybe it would be worth getting him tested for it just in case. I would advise getting this done asap if her vets think it may be this as sadly for Jake the diagnosis came too late :'(

This is weird..the same symptoms as little Jake within a week. It sounds identical and I would urge this person to seek expert veterinary help if she wishes to save the life of her kitten at once.
The toxins which the liver will not be able to filter will cause death very quickly unless help is sought immediately.
I pray that this little kitten finds the help it so desperately needs....I believe that French vets are pretty good...although I think the Dutch are supposed to be the best!
