Our four year old neutered male cat started pooing in various locations around the house a couple of months ago. He has tried almost every room in the house, including the shower tray and our bed (once when I was asleep next to him - what a nice wakeup call!!). I was reaching the end of my second pregnany when this started and we thought this may have prompted his delightful new habit but it has continued following the birth of our son. He did not seem at all bothered by the arrival of our first child so perhaps this is a red herring.
We are at a loss as to what to try next. We have changed the brand of food and litter (he and his sister are indoor cats) and used a Feliway diffuser but he is still leaving us "presents". Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Cats poo in inappropriate places because it's their way of saying they are unhappy / unsettled.
How does he get on with his sister (is she the dominant one?)
Have you tried Bachs rescue remedy in his drinking water ... this will help calm him a bit.

Is he using his tray for urinating?
It sounds like he is unsettled and upset at the moment but have you had him checked by a vet to see if there is any medical cause>
Its also very important to clean the areas he has used with biological washing stuff and then white spirit or the special stuff from Pets at Home.
Just wondering how many litter trays you have, should be one for each cat plus one and an extra one may help, Have you changed the type of litter recently cos this can be another cause for upset.

Thanks for the quick replies.
He is the dominant one of our two cats and actually seems very happy at the moment. He always uses his litter tray for urinating and more often than not for pooing which is what is confusing. The idea about Bachs Rescue Remedy is a good one - do you use the quantities stated on the pack or should it be more diluted for cats?
I did get the vet to check him over a few months ago - she didn't think anything was wrong and suggested the change of litter and use of the Feliway diffuser. We were previously using wood pellets and apparently they can be painful for their feet. We only have one litter tray so will increase the number and see if it helps.

Re Bachs: You can put a 4 or 5 drops in their drinking water. You can also put 1 drop behind each ear apparently.

I know that vicky halls (animal behaviour lady) thinks that the very fine clumping stuff they sell in waitrose is good

Sorry to hear about your little "problem." The advice that you have received so far is sound the only additional bit of advice that I can add is that cats do not poo near food, I used to put a saucer of cat biscuits in the corner of the room where my cat pooed and it worked for me.

By way of an update to those of you who were kind enough to give me your ideas it seems that the cause of our cat's problems has become clear.
One morning last week I noticed that our female cat, Millie, seemed very uncomfortable and was unsuccessfully attempting to spray around the room. She was making herself very obvious which is very unusual for her. I took her to the vet as soon as I could that morning as I thought that her recurrent cystitis had returned with a vengance, causing her difficulty to pass urine.
The vet felt Millie's bladder and said it was solid and she could not express any urine so asked to keep Millie in for a urine test and, depending on the results, a scan of her bladder. The results showed terrible cystitis and a secondary infection, so she then did a scan. Unfortunately the scan showed a tumour totally filling Millie's bladder which was apparently extremely fast growing and our only decision was whether she should be put to sleep straight away (while still under anaesthetic) or whether she was brought round so we could say goodbye. I could not believe it - that morning I first noticed a problem and by lunchtime we had had to have the poor girl put to sleep. It was terrible shock for us.
Rosco has not had his pooing problem since that day and has successfully been using the litter tray, so I think that poor Rosco had sensed that something was wrong with his sister and was doing his best to tell us.

What an awful thing to happen - having lost my own cat very quickly I can imagine how you feel. My thought are with you. Amazing to think Rosco knew all along - how sad! :-[
