Title: Poor gorgeous BSHs in Derbyshire RIP babies, you'll be missed xx
Post by: Corporal Smokey on December 11, 2007, 17:42:10 PM
Meet Alfie and Meggie. When I went to take their photos today it took all I could muster to tear myself away from them. They are beautiful British shorthairs. Alfie is a c.h.o.c.o.l.a.t.e and Meggie is blue-cream. Luckily, I don't think it'll take long to find these two a home, their looks are an advantage but I thought I'd pop them on here to a) find them a special home and b) so everyone else can ogle at them!

They were originally rehomed a few years ago from CP but have come back into our care because the lady who homed them has had to move back home with parents. She will be moving into rented accomodation and can't take her babies with her. She is absolutely devastated so we assured her that we would make sure they are loved in a forever home. They come chipped, wormed, flead, vaccinated and truly loved.

At about 9 years old, they're quiet and laid back but a little depressed at being shut in a pen. If you are interested, please PM me for more info.
Thanks for reading, here's your reward...PICTURES!

Their coats are like deep plush velvet - I love that I can stroke Misty and bury my fingers deep in her fur and it seems you are never going to touch bottom!! they are a very special breed of cat - I am sure they will have not trouble at all finding a good home!!

Just bumping this up. I can't believe these two are still in. Meggie (the bluecream girl) is so frightened.

She is losing weight and is becoming growly (until you stroke her and then she's an absolute purr-box).

Alfie is just a big, cuddly bear and is taking it well. He's so much like Josh it breaks my heart. And worse still, Meggie is just like my bridge kitty Hope (same colour nd personality).

I really want to take these two in myself but I don't think I have the room. I keep justifying it to myself but then I think day to day it's no problem but what about insurance? What if just one cat gets ill (heaven fobid)? I'm not sure I can afford it.

Or can I  :evillaugh: ? I just adore these two so much!

that is ridiculous that they are not yet placed. How could anyone resist them? Mind a BSH who is not in the mood can be a bit disconcerting ... :-:

Have they contacted the breed society to see if they can be listed with them?

If I didnt have 4 already I would be straight there, cos I love them  ;D

Four is my maximum sadly.

TBH, we haven't tried too much this side of Christmas, desireable breed and all. I'm wondering whether I should foster them in the new year and take it from there. At least that way they'll be in a warm quiet bedroom. I could introduce them to my two and see if it works out. Only thing is, what if it doesn't? I don't want any more movement for these babes than what they've already been through.

Gill is four a good number? I reckon I'm convinceable but I think four is too many in a two (double) bedroom townhouse. They would be indoors, only because my existing ones are and it'd confuse me otherwise plus it doesn't seem fair to have some in some out.

I am planning on getting a conservatory though...

fostering is a good idea, Misty calmed right down after a few days of peace and quiet in the spare room. It will make them easier to place if they are calm and friendly purr-pusses than if they are grumpy snarl-pusses. BSHs can be pretty scary when they decide to put you in your place  :scared:

I would see about getting them in a foster home in the New Year purely to help Meggie out - I have fostered cats that have been in our rescue a while, and then rehomed them from here, and it doesn't seem to bother them, so i wouldnt feel under pressure to adopt them, instead I would try and push rehoming in the New Year.

I went to see Meggie and the others on Christmas morning to bring them prezzies from Santa Paws. She is a little better than she was but still needs to get out of there. Alfie was asleep, no surprise there!

Let's see what the new year brings for these two...  ;)

Bad news everyone, Alfie and Meggie are in hospital. They have a virus. They are on drips at the moment and struggling to breathe. The vet said he's given them all the meds he can for no and they have to fight it off themselves. He's not worried about Alfie because he's such a big cuddle-bear but there's just skin and bone left on Meggie. He thinks she may have something nasty underlying and has tested for liver/kidney failure.

They have been on antibiotics and I think anti-inflammatories too and syringe-fed a/d.

This is so heartbreaking as I think it's been brought on by the stress of their lack of home. It also upsets me because she looks like my bridge kitty Hope and now she looks like Hope did when she crashed. Please send them some good furry headbutt vibes  :'(

It's not totally out of the blue, they've had this bug for a few days and been on meds/eating a/d but once they've been to the vet and got their meds you expect them to get better quite quickly not deteriorate in such an awful way.

My heart strings have been pulled all over the place today. I'm so thrilled about Sundae but feel guilty about letting him go (weird I know) and I'm so worried about these two!

Thanks for your kind words though bc, it means a lot

what terrible news CS.....   got all our fingers, toes and paws crossed here for the wee ones.

I know what its like to have them crash so quickly and really hope that they keep the fighting spirit to get through it... which can be hard with older kitties that have been in the shelter environment.

Sending lots of healing vibes and prayers for them both and hope they start to take a turn for the good very soon.

I'll find out how they are tonight at the CP meeting and if they're non-contagious, I think I'm going to see if I can foster them. At least then they'll have a warm quiet bedroom with two slaves catering for them.

I'll let you all know tomorrow how they are.

Thanks again for your kind messages

Well, we went to the vet's last night after the CP meeting to take them home. They have been on a drip since Saturday and are now rehydrated. Sadly that's about the only good news.

They are still not eating and are on convalescence food, syringe-fed every three hours. We made them beds and put them in the warm but Alfie kept crawling out of the catflap and lying on the wet, cold floor outside. He can barely walk, he's staggering around all over the place. He's lost so much weight.

I can't foster them as they still pose quite a threat to my cats so they are in isolation now. We sealed off the catflap and made them as comfortable as possible.

I got in very late last night and I am exhausted. If two cats can do this to me, just a volunteer who cleans and feeds once a week, it only adds to the respect I have for those of you who go it alone and have this sort of thing to deal with regularly.

I'll update you when I know more

poor babies I hope they can fight back, do you know what virus it is?

It's the dreaded cat-flu. Normally they would be eating by now but the vet's not sure why they aren't. I think it's combined with being chucked back into rescue that's done it.

Well they did keenly sniff their chicken Sheba that I left out and hopefully will have had some once they were left alone. I'm going to visit them later and take another oil-filled radiator down for them.

You don't think it could be that Alfie's feeling too hot and stuffy and that's why he wants to lie in the cold do you? We've been trying to keep them as warm and cosy as possible but any tips are always gratefully received.

This is the worst instance of cat-flu I've seen, although I've been fortunate and not seen it too much.

They have a sudafed plug-in with them and loads of water, sheba/gourmet/exigent food for choice. This is on top of the syringed food.

well oscar and his brother both had chest infections and the stiff leg thing I really thought I was going to lose them and I'd only had them 3 days I didn't put them anywhere warm I just let them go where they wanted and both of them settled under the table in the dining room I think they do get a higher temp so he might be a bit warm

I'm putting this picture on again because I can't get the image of such a huge cat reduced to staggering around out of my head. OH was devastated too, I think he'd commited himself to helping these to to mend. I can't help feeling selfish for not taking them home and nursing them myself but what if one of mine caught it?

It raises a huge dilemma in my mind about working in rescue. I'm not going to stop but if one of mine got this sick I don't think I could forgive myself.  :'(

I'm so sorry to hear this CS

It is so so sad when this happens and to such beautiful cats too.   Play hard on the bridge Alfie.

Unfortunately working in rescue comes with the bad as well as the good but you have to think of the positive side in the care, love and affection you gave them in their last few days and concentrate on the good you can do.  If you think of the bad only then you'd never be able to keep doing this work as it just eats you up.

One point to always remember tho too is that you have to think of the cats you have that are healthy first before fostering the sick and don't feel guilty because you can't look after the sick at home.  You'd never ever forgive yourself if somethign happened to your own little ones and I'm sure that Alfie appreciated all you did for him and that he was safe, warm and comfortable where he was.

RIP  babe Alfie.

Post by: Roz on January 10, 2008, 13:23:17 PM
Oh I am so sorry to hear about poor Alfie....bless him.  I am surprised that the vet let them both go back to the rescue if they were so sick.  Couldn't they have put a chest drain on Alfie if he had such a lot of fluid on his chest?  Some of that excess fluid might have been able to be removed with a syringe even to free up some lung space or otherwise oxygen given.  They can do this without the use of anaesthetic.  Poor little boy was trying to find the damp air which would have allowed him to breathe more easily.  That is why he was lying outside on the cold ground.   It is so very sad.

I hope dear little Meggie makes it through.  If she has fluid and is unable to breathe she should be put in a bathroom or somewhere damp.  The steam assists in decongesting their lungs. Look for rapid or shallow breathing.

This however is just another story of people giving up their cats for insufficient reason and letting someone else pick up the tab.  Some animals are sensitive and vulnerable and do not take well to life in a shelter.  I think the owner should be told about the fate of her cats...it might make her less willing to offload another one so easily in the future.

Sorry but it's all too sad and I'm fed up with people's irresponsibility towards their pets.

R.I.P. dear little Alfie....you will be among friends now.....run free in those sweet meadows darling and watch over your sister.  She needs your help.

So sorry Corporal Smokey...you couldn't have done more.

Lots of love

Roz

Bless you Roz, that helps knowing a little more about why. At least it may help me to help another. My gut feeling was that they shouldn't have come back from the vet's but I'm only a volunteer so I can't force anyone to keep them there at such huge expense.

I didn't know about fluid either, it makes me really angry if that's the case as their breathing was bad before they left the vet.

We've been trying to get in touch with the previous owner for a while now. We wanted her to come and visit them in the hope that it would be comforting to them.

I'm going to visit little Meggie later and I'll take all your nice wishes and prayers with me xx

Hi again Corporal Smokey,

In my (humble) opinion any cat that is very sick should be kept at the surgery until it is well on the way to recovery.  It would seem that most vet surgeries are all too keen send them home with a cocktail of drugs for you to administer which, as we all know, is sometimes very difficult with cats.

If ever one of my cats is really ill, I now always ask that he/she be kept in where they can inject all the medication...or have experienced nurses to pop the pills...and keep them under observation, until he/she is out of the woods.  I would visit every evening of course, but it does not cost very much to keep them in.  I know when Jet had his penilectomy I was told I could take him home a few days earlier than I actually did.  I made the choice not to because he was receiving such a lot of drugs and I knew they were vital for his recovery and I didn't want my ineptitude to jeopardise his chances.

I pray that little Meggie pulls through....poor little poppet.  She must be missing her brother.  Makes you wonder whether they were ever vaccinated!

Lots of love to you all

Roz

Oh Meggie, Meggie,  I'm so very sorry to hear this news.

To think that all of this could have been avoided if those little babes hadn't been thought expendable...so very, very sad. :'(

R.I.P. darling.. I'm sure Alfie will be waiting for you...together now in paradise as you were in life.  God bless both of you little angels.

So very upset for you Amy.

I hope you don't let such an experience deter you from trying to help any others.  You did everything you possibly could.

Hugs

aw no...  so sorry to hear this CS.     Poor babes just didn't have the ending they deserved but you did everything that you could for them and gave them love and affection when they needed it most.

Play hard at the bridge babes Alfie and Meggie... together again.

It is frustrating when people toss cats aside so easily.  I will never understand it.  never.

  to you CS.  You did all you could.

Thinking of you.
xx

I can't help but think that these two poor little cats, Alfie and Meggie, died from illnesses exacerbated by a broken heart.  I am left to wonder however, whether they had ever been vaccinated for cat 'flu.......

The shelter had obviously been told that their vaccs were up to date but if that was the case how come they both went downhill so fast from cat flu?  It also seems very likely that little Meggie, because of her weight loss, had been suffering from kidney probs but was not receiving medication for her condition....so was struggling anyway. On reflection, it might be a pity that the shelter did not receive them into their care sooner...before they had become so frail....They might today be enjoying the loving forever home they deserved, rather than the sad fate that awaited them.  Nine years is no age for a cat.

A tragic and very, very sad story all round. :'( :'(

That was the other thing. Sorry I didn't mention it, vaccination cards were found. Alfie was in fact 13 and Meggie 16. I really wouldn't have thought they were that old when I first met them though. And yes, I too believe that they died of broken hearts, that's why it hurts so much  :(

Oh I've only just caught up with this, I'm just so shocked and so sad, and agree the trauma of the move to rescue at their ages almost certainly excacerbated underlyinig illnesses, what a sad sad story. I'm so sorry Amy

Aww, the poor babies, so much older and end up in a rescue, I hate to see oldies in rescues, I wish more foster homes (or ideally permanent homes) could be found for them.
