I know we all problably worm our little ones regularily but my nan always goes on about meat (from tins but obviously pouches too) cause cats to develop worms.
Is this true?
-
I wouldn't think so, Gwen.
Cats get worms either from ingesting infected fleas (why worming and defleaing should go hand in hand) or from eating prey that they catch.
I have to worm Pearl on a regular basis due to the sheer number of mice and birds that she eats.
I also have to worm Toby at the same time as he has a propensity to washing madam's derriere...
-
Never heard that one before! Very unlikely I would say - most tinned/pouch cat food has been processed beyond there being any vitamins/minerals etc left in 'em anyway, never mind anything that could cause worms!
Cats can get worms from fleas, or from eating prey.

Hey Witty - SNAP!

LOL Gillian! Great minds etc... ;)

Thanks guys :)
Must be an old wives tale then but I mustnt dare tell my nan as shes always right
-
back in the good old days you could get some nasty worms or intestinal thingies from pork if it was not properly cooked (which is why your nan probably cooks pork till it it white and dry) but never heard of it coming from canned meat or pouches - old wives tale definitely!!
-
Agreed - definitely not from tins, they are heated to ridiculously high temperatures to ensure that any bacterial spores are killed off. I guess there's more potential risk from pouches where the contents are 'gently steamed' in the pouch as I have no idea what sort of temperatures they reach, but if it's enough to 'cook' the contents then it's highly unlikely there'd be any nasties left alive in there either...
-
I would most definitely agre, an old wives tale.
-
No i'd say impossible because it has to be taken up to certain temperatures and such like in the cooking process. (think of pasteruised milk, abit like that)
Mind you my lovely (not so) next door neighbour argued and still would till the cows came home that female dogs can only get worms by mating with an infected male dog :-: Mind you that is the same man who also argued until i was blue in the face that foxes only have 1 lung :tired:
-
Perhaps he is the man I saw in a pub once that insisted all white cats were deaf and all tabby cats were male. At the time I have about 10 female tabbies.

Anything fed to animals in the uk legally has to be fit for human consumption. Most animals that are used for meat are regularly wormed, and the cooking process will kill any eggs or larvae. Animals can get worms via fleas and prey, but they can also pick them up by eating grass, as grazing animals do, due to ther animals passing eggs in their faeces. Worm egges and larvae can survive for short periods on damp grass, and may be ingested when the cat eats grass.

ALL big brand tinned foods are tested by humans. There are folk who have that as their full time job  I know that to be fact coz i've met some who delighted in telling us their favorite flavours and even admitted to eating it out of work

I had heard that but I read an article in one of the cat mags a while back in which it was stated that contrary to popular opinion that is no longer the case. Stupid idea if you ask me - what has human taste got to do with cat food?
-
Well it was when i was down at the pedigree waltham centre a few years back, A few of the guys had been doing that job for 15 + years. I am guessing they may also had more to do with the formula/ingredients or making of the food than just testing it coz i cant see anyone getting paid fulltime like they were to sit and eat dog/cat food all day long :-:
-
My vet once told me that pet food has to be fit for human consumption because there are impoverished people who eat it because they can't afford anything else. I don't believe that personally - there's loads of food cheaper than tinned cat food! But no, I don't think cats can catch worms from their food - I've even read that there's no real need to worm indoor cats unless they've had fleas, and surely that advice would be different if food posed a risk?
-
I think the days of poor people eating cat food are long past. Ever since cats became members of the family their food has increased in price accordingly. So it is cheaper to buy spam than cat food. I was once stopped by a friend at the supermarket cos he saw all I had in my trolly was bread and cat food. He knew i had been doing it hard financially, so put two and two together and made five  'Oh, Jo, I had no idea things were that bad' sez he   Took quite a bit of talking to convince him what was going on cos he knows I am a stubborn cow and would be unlikely to admit it if things were that bad, gave us a lot to laugh about for years afterwards
-
    Oh, that's hilarious!!! I buy a lot of cat food with two cats of average appetite and Minnie The Munching Monster - do you think that's why the cashiers at my local supermarket always look at me with pity?
-
only if you don't wash off the jellymeat that spilled down the front of your cat-patterned windcheater
-
   Yeah, I really must stop dressing like a tramp
