Advocat ???

Both Poppy and Charlie have Advocate, had no problems. They also have profender spot on every 3 months. This ruins their glossy black  fur, looks like toothepaste on their fur. Wears of after a week or so.

Chester has Advocate and Milbemax and never had a problem. We use Stronghold on the cats.

I had a look through the leaflet that came with the Advocate and it says it can cause a reaction to any animal that is hyper-sensitive.  It also says it is good in the help of flea allergic dermatitis.


Our practice definitely says it should not be used for collies though, so they obviously have some sort of bad reaction to it.  Also if using milbemax wormer, the wormer should be given either three weeks after advocate or at least two weeks before.


After reading this thread and that of Spike I don't think I will risk it on mine.  I will go with either stronghold or frontline combo which are both still POM.

I have just read the whole thread about Spike -so sad I noticed that there seemed to be mentions of a few reactions in white cats - could this be a connection or a coincidence?

I remember poor Spike - I wonder if Bayer ever accepted any responsibility

though mine have all had several doses of Advocate, and shown no ill effects

but there can always be the odd rogue batch

Bayer's website above says that both can be used as "part of a strategy to treat flea allergy dermatitis". However I didn't take a degree in molecular biology  so I don't understand the bit about how they both actually work.

Rossi was given Advocate when first picked up as he was too wild to be given pills, but we now use Advantage for fleas and Milbemax for worms (he actually seems to quite like taking the tablet if it's wrapped in ham or cheese!)

Both are from the vet.

Gill - don't recall seeing anything about flea allergies but Rossi hasn't picked any fleas up while using the Advantage - should probably read the leaflet again...

I believe advocate cannot be used with cats who have a fleaq allergy as they have to bite before beeing killed, or is that advantage grrrrrrrrr . Can never remember but Kocka was on which ever one it was and had to be moved off cos she had a flea allergy.

Worthwhile looling at the leaflet cos flea allegies can just suddenly start.

Advocate is a POM flea treatment. We use it at our Practice but I have never heard of any problems, apart from the fact that you cannot use it concurrently with Milbemax wormer.  Milbemax must be given either three weeks before or after using Advocate.

Just got an update from the board on the kitten



Well the update is... he's up, bright and perky this morning. So perky in fact he's pulled his drip out. The vet said he hadn't eaten yet though, so they were going to keep an eye on him during the day and see how he goes. He should be home tonight.

He certainly could lick where this bald patch was.. and also could get his leg up there to scratch it! Perhaps he's double-jointed!

I'm sooo relieved that he's doing ok (so far!)

2ND UPDATE
I've just phoned the hospital and I've got to go and pick him up :-)

He's called Peefa... Peefa Pussy! Blame my hubby.. who didn't even WANT a cat! You should have seen him last night.. he was almost as upset as me :-)

Yep its a POM but is one that is being considered for a downgrade like frontline.

No probs when i have used it.

I've never heard of it but assume it is one of those.

Hi everyone.. I've got a 15 week old kitten. He's been to have his vaccinations and everything was fine. Last time he was given some Advocat anto-flea/worm/tick stuff.. and we put it on him on Sunday evening as per the instruction leaflet. He was fine all day on Sunday and Monday. However, on Tuesday morning he had scratched and licked a big patch between his shoulders totally bald and it was sore and weeping. Needless to say I made an appointment for him to go to the vets and took him yesterday.

The vet gave him a steroid injection and some antibiotics. He was ok last night, a bit quieter than usual, but to be expected. He was fine this morning, the sore area looked a lot better than it was and he was quite perky. However, during the day he has really gone downhill and amazingly fast. He had been sick, but apart from that he really looked miserable and totally disinterested in everything. He hadn't eaten any of his food either. So, it was back to the vets. Normally he doesn't like the car, but this time he really didn't care. The vet was really worried about him and told me to take him straight to the veterinary hospital where he's been admitted to be put on a drip.
