I thought I should post some sad news.  The owner of this cat is away this weekend and I am cat sitting.  Unfortunately overnight the cat died; I have told the owner (I'd want to know if it was me).

I'd left her at 5pm after she'd had some food; I left her grooming herself on the kitchen worktop only to go back to feed her this morning to find her on the kitchen floor, led on her side with her eyes open, and stiff.  No physical signs of injury so I guess it was something internal; I just hope that it was sudden and not painful although I'm now suspecting that all the times over the past few weeks was a sign that something was wrong.

I've just got back home and gave my cats a big hug to make me feel better and one of them decided to sneeze all over my face so at least something has made me smile this morning.

RIP Cassie.

He doesn't, but I'm sure he thinks he should be treated like royalty!

Thanks for that Christine, I've just realised that your cat looks the spitting image of our latest cat!

Does yours have a tiara too?  :wow:

Just kidding and I hope your chum gets to the bottom of her cat's disappearing acts.

It does sound as if she's going visiting.  I think putting a paper collar on her asking the reader to call her owner is a good idea.

To answer all the replies so far:

Due to work there's no way of knowing where she is going during the day once she goes out, I did advise the owner to try and follow her to see where she went but she's not done this yet.

She is a only cat but there are and always have been other cats in the neighbourhood; some of them she gets on with, some she doesn't but there's never really been any scraps that we're aware of.  She isn't the type of cat who wants to socialise with other cats.

I doubt another cat has been in her house because, when she gets called late at night, she rushes in and acts fine when in the house and will happily wander from room to room, eat her food, groom, sit down, etc....  It's just the disappearing act that is the change in her routine

is she the only cat?

I ask because I had a cat who spent all day, and would have spent all night if I had not locked the cat flap, hanging around with a neighbour's five cats

he just missed feline company, I suppose - if someone new has recently moved in nearby with a cat(s) this could be a possible answer

Are you sure the cat isn't going elsewhere during the day, getting cuddles/ warmth/ food? Is it possible she is scared of a neighbour's cat, does her territory (home) smell different as another cat has been in though the open flap?

yes thats a mystery and my first thought is that its the flap that has started the change and although she knows it works she just doesnt associate it in her mind and possible is scared of it. i am not sure how you solve this but if she goes out of it she will gradually learn to come back through it. maybe it caught her tail or something and she does associate it with pain but that should go.

i would advise her owners to only let her out through the flap, never open the door for out only, that will teach her that one way at least she can do it. as the worse weather comes hopefully this will bring her home agasin and if not, i would suspect she has found another house.

i would put a paper collar attached to hers with a not do not feed as she is on meds and to call the number on the tag if she visits.

Cat has completed changed behaviour

Hi,
I'm posting this for a friend.  They have a female cat and for about 5yrs she has been a normal cat, coming in and out of the cat flap as and when she wants 24hrs a day however about 6wks ago she started to stay out a lot more and only came in late at night, sometimes needing calling just to make sure she was still around (which she never used to need).  After about a week or two we figured out that the magnetic cat flap wasn't working properly and that she was having to really force it hard to get in.  Even though she was having problems getting in it never stopped her from wanting to go out during all this time.  After we figured out the problem we took all the magnetic things off the cat flap so she could get in without any problems.  We even taped the cat flap open at one stage but her behaviour didn't change, you could argue that it got worse.  She was staying out all day and all night, the only time she'd come in was when called.  She knew the cat flap now worked as she came in through it once or twice without any issues as our first concern was that she was scared of the cat flap in case she'd been hurt trying to get in when it used to get stuck.  Through all this time, on the occasions she did come in she would stay around a while, occasionally sleeping inside overnight and then would go out in morning and not been seen until called late at night.  Calling her anytime during the day or early evening got no response even when we walked around the local area and through the woods.

At present she's now being called at night and kept in by the owner and she seems happy to stay in, even sleeping on top of her owner in bed.  In the morning she'll have breakfast and then be let out and won't be seen until around 10-11pm when she's called again.  When she is called, she'll run in very fast.  She has occasionally used the cat flap as well to get in so is still aware that it works.

The only other thing I've noticed it that she's been grooming a bit more often and I thought she was stressed because of this however I'd have hoped the stress would be less now.

Doe anybody have any ideas on what could be causing this behaviour?  It's such a dramatic change in her character and the only thing we can link it too is the cat flap getting stuck but that doesn't explain why we only see her very late at night.  She's not unhappy at home as she purrs and is friendly when she is in.  The only thing I can think of is she's going to somebody elses house during the day and staying there for some reason but if this is the case I'd have hoped the other person would be responsible enough to call the number on the cat tag.

Thanks for any help you can offer, sorry for the long message but wanted to get all the info together
