11 weeks ago I went home from work to you my Bailey boy, not knowing that in just a few precious hours I’d have to let you go.

Last night I had a dream about you and felt so sad when I woke up and didn’t find you tucked under my arm with your paw on my face, snoozing beside me.

Your home has been taken over by the monster kittens but I still miss you terribly my Boo-face.

My snuggly, peaceful boy, you’re always in my heart

On Thursday I was driving home from work feeling pretty flat but as I started my journey a huge rainbow appeared. It was right in front of me the whole way home. I found myself welling up with tears and grinning at the same time. I’m not much of a believer, but I chose to believe that was my boy. I managed to snap a photo.

Then on Sunday I handed Baileys three beds (yes, three!) and his scratching post into our local SPCA shelter :( Of course, I couldn’t resist a look in the cattery.
There were so many poor cats looking for homes, and lots and lots of kittens. But I found myself crouched on the floor falling in love with a big ginger tom. He was adorable, rolling around trying to get his tummy rubbed through the bars of his pen and wailing very time I walked away.
I spent absolutely ages there and have kept thinking about him since.

But I just don’t know if I’m ready and having adopted my 3 when they were tiny kittens, I have no experience of adopting a fully grown puddy cat… I just keep going round in circles every time I think about it. I worry that it’s a kneejerk reaction to losing my boy so suddenly.

We’re looking to move house next year and Andy thinks we should wait until then before thinking about another cat. I know that's probably a sensible plan... I just don’t know if I can wait that long. So confused!

I agree.  It's devastating when you're left without  your stalwart companion, whose absolute pleasure in being with you both was made apparent every day.

When we were in your shoes Nicola, we couldnt bear it either.   It helped when we opened our home up to another cat - well, a kitten in fact - but I realise that may not be the answer for everyone.

We just couldnt bear that totally empty house.  It was something we'd never had before.

It didnt stop us grieving for our beloved Padster when we took on a new charge, but it gave us a focus, and a little life that needed someone to take care of them so it was a responsibility - something to get up for.

It's difficult to brood when you have a small ball of fur tangled in your hair at bedtime and breathing in your ear, or hurtling past your ear at a hundred miles an hour just as you sit down to a cuppa.   :shify:

As MacBeenz MacSquee's personality developed, and his character won us over, he lovingly wrapped a bandage round our hearts and made it more bearable to live with our loss.

Of course we went through it all again when Mac himself was taken from us, but then Ross stepped up to fill those loving boots as best he could, and the process began again.  And so it went as Ross passedout of our lives too.

And now it's Tinks and Moray who've helped to heal the hurts.

I hope that in time - however short or long that may be - you might be able to move forward with purpose too.       I'm sure Rocky, Jake and Bailey would want that for you too.

Thanks so much everyone.
It’s so hard to get used to, part of me still expects him to come home.

There are particular times of the day when I’m still really struggling.

I hate coming home from work at the end of the day to an empty house. Bailey was always waiting for me with his nose pressed up against the porch door, letting out huge meows to greet me as I let myself in. I always had to pick him up and have him over my shoulder for the first ten minutes to avoid continually tripping over him.

And his bedtime routine was adorable, he’d follow us up to bed and spend the first 20 minutes lying on Andy’s chest with his head resting on Andy’s chin. If Andy dared to lie on his side Bailey would just stare at him and wail until he turned over and provided a comfy chest to lie on.
Then he’d clamber over to my side of the bed, tuck himself in under my arm and snuggle up to me with his paw always touching my face. I’m so used to falling asleep with him squished up against me purring, it makes me so sad trying to go to sleep without him there.

I think losing him is hitting me doubly hard because he was the last of my 3 boys to go. I haven’t been without a cat in 16 years.  I don’t feel like myself without a furbaby to take care of.

RIP gorgeous Bailey.

It's worse for us when they go suddenly - the shock of them being fine one minute and struggling the next is unbearable. But it's far better for them, especially if their beloved human is with them.

Take it easy, be nice to yourself and cry when you need to.

Oh Nicola.  I'm so sorry for your loss.

Bailey was beautiful.  Absolutely beautiful.

It's hideous when things happen like this, and it certainly wont feel like it, but it was at least a blessing  that he experienced little in the way of prolonged pain, and you were able to be there to ease him out of the world, just as you were there to welcome him into your life all those years ago.

I know - we all know - the kind of pain that void fills up with, and that the emptiness left behind is all-encompassing.

Rest easy, Bailey.  You are a very special Bridge Baby.

Bailey - Goodnight Boo Face - 1 Year
« Reply #1 on: September 21, 2015, 12:20:48 PM »
In the early hours of Tuesday morning I had to say goodbye to my Bailey.

He was my constant companion for 15 years and I’m devastated to have lost him.

After 3 years of managing his hyperthyroidism, it was his heart that failed him in the end and it was horribly sudden and unexpected.
He went from being fine one minute, to struggling for breath the next and we rushed him to an emergency vet.

An ultrasound confirmed my biggest fear. He was in heart failure and his lungs had filled with fluid. He deteriorated so quickly it was just heartbreaking to see him in such a state.

The vet was amazing and helped me weigh up the options for him, but to put him through draining the fluid, ultrasounds and x-rays and more medication, with the most we could hope for being a few months more with him, was just too much. He’d had enough of vets and blood tests and pills and it was time to let my boy go.

He was in such distress that he had to be sedated and then I just held him on my lap and we said our goodbyes.

I am so completely heartbroken. He was the last of my three boys and we called him our ‘last man standing’

The most affectionate cat I’ve ever known, he spent his life curled up on top of us. We were his whole world.
I’m so lost without him and for the first time in my whole adult life, I have no cat at home. The house doesn’t feel like home at the moment.

Goodnight Bailey, I miss your wee face so much
