Just logged on again to find out how it was going.

I can't say how much I hope it's the ear thing causing him problems.

If his balance is off he's probably worried about being up on anything higher than the floor.

To add to what Mrsr says, When Ed was sick, they thought the primary tuimour was in his head somewhere, and he kept stretching his neck and circling too, and it doesn't sound like he's doing that either, so fingers crossed.

Oh Gill I have just seen your updates

Sweetie if it helps you with my Sylvester and his brain tumour he circled to the left constantly, wasn't howling, just constant left tight circles and with Sofa with her brain bleed she lost the use of her back legs - your baby isn't doing either so I hope that helps your fears that its not neuro - I know there is no way of knowing but thought if you knew the worst my cats were in and knowing that your baby isn't doing the same it could help you. Maybe that infection in his ear is bad and the drops haven't kicked in yet but sweetie I know you must be frantic with worry. I hope my post has come across to you in the right way and not upset you x

Its been very cold all day and too cold for me but still havent had a call....I am in despair.

Franta is calm at the moment and under the computer but dont know when another attack may happen and he goes crazy and dont know what would happen if he is in the carrier.

Rachel just rang and we are off to the vets, she says to take it carefully and not rush.

She says the best place for him is in the carrier if he has an attck because if its neuro he will bend himself in half to circle in the carrier.

So will be back later depending on traffic.

If you are going Gill take a bottle of water for yourself and a wet face cloth or towel to keep washing your face to keep youawake - we don't want any accidents. I know it's cold but keep a window open a little bit too.

Apparently Rachel just come out of surgery and is cleaning up. I have to leave in next 15mins if we are going and the traffic like last night is gonna be bad and I am so tired I didnt want to be driving in the dark.
Also need shopping cos need milkand have been worried about leaving him alone.

When my Cassie had a middle ear infection years ago she howled a lot and she kept stumbling and walking to one side until the antibiotics sorted it out, and if I remember rightly we had to try some different antibiotics as the first ones werent working, can't remember what they were though sorry, long time ago. Doesnt account for the appetitie though, really don't know about that.

YES you so right Rosella and of course until this started Franta would hardly eat so its really strange, must make a note of that......done. Also he doesnt seem to want to get any higher than the floor, although he got on the sofa with me before the last attack.

Its really strange and cant find anything on internet with his symptoms......drooling, circling, yowling and bad ear! And cant sleep without bringing it on....or maybe lying down.

Yes have been ready to make vet trip ever since I got up and sitting by the phone all day cos I cant hear it unless I am in a room with it. Needed to make other calls but didnt want to use the phone.

I am seething and stressed of course, they keep making delay excuses cos at 15oo they said she was moreorless finished and half hour later sthey say she not out. Their phone not engaged so as consults started again at 1530, they bhavent been cancelling................if they werent so far away I would just turn up!

speaking from personal experiance an ear infection is a thousand times worse than toothache
and can also affect balance, having said that, trying to imagine what Poor Franta's going through

I would listen to your vet Gill and follow thier advice

Gill what I can't understand in particular is his appetite being so good if it is balance related. You would think if spinning indicates a balance problem, he would feel nauseous? Are you ready to make another trip to vet this afternoon if it is called for Gill?

Thanks all.

Have just rung the surgery again and Rachel still operating and nobody can speak to her till she comes out cos its a full scrub down.

She will ring me as soon as she comes out they say...............I needed to get something done about this this morning and i hope thatmaybe the case Rosella but how is it diagnosed...........I am a sufferer of course and I wasnt diagnosed!

Its the howling and drooling and now the spinning and if you try and hold him he panics and fights and jumped down.

He had been lying with me and had fallen asleep but with his head up resting on my arm and suddenly the teeth chattering started which produces the drool and then the circling, Once he has calmed down then he is starving and has just eaten 3/4 of a pouch of felix including lumps.

He is still crouched by his food dish, and in the study so at least he is warm.

When he lies against me he feels so hot but his ears are not even warm.

Yes I have a written record since midnight and now using this as a reference too.

Hi Gill. So very sorry to hear that Franta is so poorly. Just wanted you to know I've been googling and would reiterate what Carol has just posted that the circling could be due to balance problem caused by ear infection. I did wonder maybe if vestibular disease might be indicated but can't see any mention of howling/dribbling in symptom list for that. It could be "just" a very bad ear infection that needs strong ABs and time for them to work. Very concerned for you both

I'm so sorry that Franta is poorly. Don't really know what I can say to help other that to tell you Korky had a nasty problem with ears last summer but is fine now. He wasn't howling like Franta is but he couldn't walk a straight line and kept falling over. Loads of 'gritty' stuff was coming from his ear and he wasn't eating which is a real tell-tale sign of distress for Korky - he loves his food. His balance was so bad that the vet thought he might have had a stroke and would have given him steroids but with his kidney problems didn't think that was a good idea. In the end he had and AB injection followed by 10 days oral antibiotics and some tablets to increase blood flow to the brain. He improved within 48 hours but wasn't really back to normal for a few weeks. As I say, he is fine now. I hope Franta feels better soon.

Really hope you get it sorted out, although I agree it may be better to wait and talk to the vet that knows him best, with all the other problems he has.

Will be thinking of you and keeping fingers crossed it's nothing more serios than the ears (which speaking from experience (of me!)) is agnoy enough in itself.

It might be a good idea to start writing down everything htat is happening.

I have felt his ears and they were not warm before and still arent.

I would prefer just now to wait for Rachel to ring me cos she was the one that spoke to Brisol about him before and knows him best.

He moved from the nearest mat to the door when I got dyson out and now is further back but its too cold for me out there...mind you that doesnt take much!

I keep going in to see him and he is not lying down, so am watching the time to see if an attack happens cos I think it only happens when he puts his head down but reckon he must be very tired now......I certainly am.

Gill, if he is sitting in the cold maybe it's becasue his head/ear feels like it's on fire inside where you can't feel it. We don't know anything for certain because he can't talk.

I would be tempted to pjhone another vet and ask them to help as your et has an emergency - surely they will listen and give you some help under the circumstances.

I do agree with you Sue and feel that Rachel has more knowledge than Will.

Trouble is they have had a major emergency come in between me chasing and waiting for Rachel to ring cos she had just finished consultations and me ringing the third time and they dragged out Will because they were about to start a big operation, presumabbly on this emergency.

Trouble is I feel that Franta is an emergency now too and tomorrow is Friday the 13th and I am soooooo supersticious.

Franta is crouched in the kitchen at present and its freezing in their but can get him to come where its warm.......could be he is moving away from all the places that he thinks are hurting him.

All this is happening after he has been lying down except the time at the litter tray this morning.

This sounds like ear to me but could be a stroke but dont think he will be having a stroke everytime he moves from lying to not.

He is spinning like a dervish with howls and drools since last night when it happens and it could nbe that he hasnt been given the right drops.

I saw the end of the ear thingy and yes it was a mess but I am not sure that its just his ear or that even if it is he is being treated right.

I think that Rachel is probable senior there today as maybe Richards day off.

If its just an ear problem then maybe franta needs pain meds until it starts to improve because he wasnt given any yesterday and then also is the question of convenia because I thought it took longer to act initially than other antibiotics although Will told me today that the meds should have kicked in by now.

Besides Franta only having one kidney he also has an enlearged heart, so anesthetics are dangerous for him, also travelling say to Bristol is at least two hours in either direction depending on traffic and also very stressful, especia;;y if he has an attack in the carrier.

I expect my vet to be more proactive than this and yesterday Will was relieved that Franta had started sticking a paw in his ear.......so was I but I am not a vet, and surely ears should have been part of the intial eaxamination.

Franta has no temperature, no third eyelid appearing and apart from me who knows him seems, apart from the attacks, pretty normal.

But he is not acting normal at all and sitting in the cold is not Frantas thing.

I am hoping that Rachel will ring around 1400 or so but she has gone home for lunch before now!

I too would go with the MRI I know for a dog you'd be looking at around £800 but if that is what is going to diagnose it then I'd go for it.

Gill, this is an awful dilemma for you. Didn't the vet last night say his ear was quite messed up inside? If so, I'm just wondering how that would relate to a brain issue, and I think I'd be wanting to speak to your usual vet if possible before taking any "major step" decisions. It may be the other vet is being ultra cautious where normal vet has more of a feel for franta? Just thinking aloud here, and you might feel differently knowing the vets as you do.
