Title: hi, first time cat owner
Post by: Indys Mamma on July 10, 2008, 11:11:37 AM
Hi

I recently gained my first ever cats.

Mabel is a stray/feral, we are fairly certain she has been abused (more scared of men than women) and a vet check confirms old injuries consistent with being thrown out of a car. Anyway, we got her spayed and have released her back into the garage as she wasn't happy in the house, though she still comes to the back door and yells for food every night!

I also got her son, a kitten about 6 weeks old (10 weeks old now) that I called Indy after the adventurous Dr Jones. He is an absolute darling and now very much a people cat. He is being kept as an indoor cat as when I move he is going with me to a city and I think it would be cruel to let him get used to outdoors living and then restrict him. He is already used to his harness, he is also cage trained, staying in a large dog crate when I am not in/at night/if he has upset my elderly dogs until he calms down...

here's a couple of piccies

Indy and Mabel when still uncaught strays

Indy now he's my baby and such a sweetheart

oh my name is Cat btw  :innocent: (Catherine) ironic, huh?! and I will probably be asking millions of questions as I have never owned (or be owned by) cats before so I have been treating Indy like a puppy and so far it seems to be working  ;D

 :welcome: to Purrs.

Your two are lovely.

For the mother cat I woudl try to get her to socialise and use the garage as a safe place for her (so she can hide there if she wants to but can leave when she wants to) and let her come to the house as much as she wants to. She will take her time, and might never want to but it gives her a choice.

As for the little one, not sure what you mean by cage trained?  Also, it might be better to let the kitten have free reign of a room rather than to crate them.

Have they both been microchipped and vaccinated?

we can't let Indy loose without supervision as he gets over excited and hurts the dogs, both of which are 12.5 and very set in their ways. They both also can open doors so I don't want Indy getting out of the house. He is only in his crate 5.5 hours when I work (only part time) and 7-8 hours at night. Otherwise he has free roam unless he gets too excited and needs a timeout.

Mabel has been vaccinated but not chipped until we are certain she won't just wander off forever more as a feral cat, Indy needs one more jab as he's only just old enough for them and he getting chipped at same time as his next jab (next week)

Hi Cat and  :welcome: to Purrs,

What lovely looking Furbabes.  You say when you move to the city you will be taking Indy ... will Mabel be going as well?

I'm not sure about Mabel... whether she would be happy being confined to a flat after being feral. My mum is happy to care for her, she is welcome in the house if she ever wants to come in....

oh here's a lil photo diary of Indy from feral scamp to king of all he surveys  :Luv2:

Ahhh I didn't realise your Mum would be staying at the house .... I'm sure Mabel will be happier staying in her "patch" being looked after by your mum   :Luv2:

Your furries are gorgeous.
