Yesterday morning Basil was making a coughing sound and coughed up some clear liquid/foam. I looked it up and furballs were suggested. Otherwise he seemed ok - maybe a little more quiet than usual. He stayed closer to home than usual. He drank water and ate a little food - he is normally an erratic eater so it's not unusual for him to just nibble. I kept him in overnight and he seemed well in himself except for occassionally swallowing / gulping with his neck stretched. He has gone out this morning as usual but I wonder if I need to take him to the emergency vet. Obviously i would rather not have to do that but I am rather worried about him. Otherwise I will monitor him over the weekend and go to our usual vet on Tuesday. He does also have a heart murmur and has been prescribed Nelio5. Does anyone have any advice please? Thank you.

Only a vet would be able to advise but, if you are concerned maybe heart related, check colour of tongue and gums ; pink is good and breathing rate whilst resting; anything between 20 and 40 usually acceptable altho tbh I would get regular breathing rate around 40 looked into.
Any possible breathing difficulty is an emergency but sounds like a furball maybe?

SOUNDS LIKE FURBALL TO ME

Thank you Gill and Rosella, He is avoiding me at the moment so I haven't been able to check his gums and tongue yet! Once I catch up with him I'll have a look. It may not happen untill bedtime but at least the vet will be open 24/7 until Tuesday.

And me, mine often bring them up in clear fluid and/or froth, BUT, if you are in any doubt, get him to the vet.

OR AMONGST FOOD AND IT IS THE SEASON OF THE BIG MOULT!

I decided not to take Basil to the vet because over the weekend, he was eating and peeing normally and seemed happier so it seemed best to leave it. I have been watching him very carefully to be sure he's ok and I'll continue to do that for the next few weeks. Thank you for your responses. Xx
