Title: Bonnie's been ill since 8th Oct. BUT 99% better now and seeing vet in Feb 2012
Post by: maryas on October 18, 2011, 23:42:20 PM
Had to rush Bonnie to the vet last Sunday morning cos on Saturday night she couldn't open her eye and she was screaming wehn I touched her head and when I spoke to the vet he said he would see her Sunday morning.  He gave her a good seeing over and said it was 1 of 2 things - either she had knocked her head on something or it was her 2 bad teeth that were causing it.  Gave her 2 injections and some tablets for me to give her and some liquid pain killer to put in her food. I took her back on Wednesday she was opening her eye a little bit more but not eating as much or drinking as much as she usually does. I spent all my time on the bed with her last week and this week and I'm shattered.

Took her back this morning and cos of the build up of blood in her eye he gave me another week's supply of pills for her to take and he sees her again next Monday.

I feel so sorry for her cos her eye is really dark - not showing up as bad as it is in this pic I took of her.  She can hardly see out of it and I keep the landing light on at night for her.

She's eating better now and jumping up on the window sill and walking all over my head in bed and cuddling up to me rather than sitting at the bottom of the bed.

I know I'm being daft but I'm laying on the bed with her most of the day and night just having catnaps in case she takes a turn for the worse.  I only leave her to go see to my mum.

Aww poor Bonnie and poor you Mary.   I'm pleased that she's eating better now and behaving more normally.  Has the vet said which of his initial 2 diagnoses he thinks is the correct one?  Has he done or is he going he going to do any investigations (not that I would know what).

Thanks Carol and Denise.

No he can't tell how it was caused really.  I suppose when she gets better and it happens again it will be the manky teeth to blame or maybe they will come out before it has chance to happen again.

He did talk to me about the blood and parts of the eye but it's all new to me and I'm pretty sure he is thinking the antibiotics will sort it out.

Mary  :thanks:

Mary, does vet think it may be detached retina? Did he take her blood pressure? because high BP can cause it. Hope she's ok soon and you - get some rest!  ;)

Gillian I don't think he said that. High blood pressure isn't on my last I mean let's face it, what has she to stress out about?  That relaxed she's horizontal  ;)

Your suspisions are 100% correct Helen.  ;)

That Saturday night was horrid - I ddin't even get undressed and get in to bed.  I was laid on the bed in my clothes all night just praying for 10.20 a.m. to come (the time of her appt. at vet).

No purrs at all when I stroked her and about 1.30 she had 2 Dreamies then another 10 Dreamies and bu about 3.00 a.m. she was eating a little bit of food.  By about 4.30 a.m. there was such a massive smile on my face - she was purring.  :Luv2:  Next thing I knew my alarm was going off it was 8.30 a.m.

I think the pills will work Denise, if she's no better when I take her on Monday I will ask a load of questions.

I do hope she is Ok Mary

Like Gillian I suspected a detached retina too and yes could be caused by high BP but also by a bad knock, Even relaxed cats can have high BP.

Just sending lots of get well vibes for her

All these hugs and kisses etc. for me and Bonnie is great.  Must be working too cos about 10 minutes ago she jumped up on my desk and walked on the keyboard - she must've wanted to read your messages  ;)

She's even been rubbing her right side of her head on my for me to give her head and ear a rub on the side of her bad eye so that must be a good sign.  She's had 2 pouches of Gourmet and about 20 Dreamies so eating habits are almost back to normal  :Luv2:

Thanks everyone - means so much.

Every day she seems to be dong somethng that she used to do.  Today when I got back from my mum's she was waiting behind the porch door for me cos she'd heard my car or seen me from the window sill.

I can tell she is still having probs seeing out of it properly from the way she jumps up and off the bed but she's still shoving her head in my hand for me to give her head a good rub  :Luv2:

The blood has actually moved down and I can see part of her eye at the top today.  Hopefully by the time I take her to see the vet again on Monday she will have improved a lot more.

 :thanks: for remembering guys.

Took Bonnie to the vet again this morning and she is pleased with her progress even though she still has half a pool of blood in her eye.  I have to take her back in 4 weeks and no more tablets.  If the pool of blood gets worse then I have to take her back before the 4 weeks.

I hope she's fully recovered by the time I go to Prague in December or I will be worried allthe time I'm there even though she will be in the capable hands of my friend wh olooks after her when I go away.

I'm sure she will be as she is so getting back to herself - she even played with her toys for a good 10 minutes this afternoon  :Luv2:

Thanks again.

Glad vet is pleased with Bonnie's progress Mary  :).  An elderly aunt of mine had a similar problem of blood in her eye many years ago although didn't cover quite so much of the eye area.  Can't remember if she knew how it happened and she is long gone now so can't ask.  It did take a while to fully disappear though although it was an inconvenience more than anything else.  No discomfort or anything

I wonder if it was a burst blood vessel?  I know quite a few people who've had that, I've had a mild one.  Apparently (or so a GP told someone I know) in some people the blood vessels are very close to the eye surface and it can happen if e.g. you rub your eye too much).  Not sure that Bonnie's would be the same thing though.

:censored: I had to rush Bonnie to the vet this afternoon.  She was just like she was on day 1.  The vet gave her 3 injections this time and the last one she gave her she said it would sting and boy oh boy did it.  Never seen Bonnie growl and hiss like that before, my little angel turned into the devil.  It seemed like for ever but was probably less than 30 seconds. So I've got some more anti-biotics and pain killer to give her and go back on Monday.

On Momday they may decide if she is to have the teeth out or to do an eye scan to see if there is anything at the back of her eye that might be causing this. I asked if it would be better to take the teeth out now instead of giving her antibiotics and then her being ok and then going down hill like she did today.  Sally said it's better to take the teeth out when there isn't a build up of blood and that's why I have to see how things go over the weekend.

I thought cos all the black blood had gone she was on the mend but Sally said that today there's been a new build up of blood and that's why she was in pain.

The starange thing is that she's been eating and drinking since I got her home and she even wacked her mouse as she passed it, but diddn't play with it properly.  I've been laid on the bed with her since 5.00 p.m. and just had the chance now to come on here while she's asleep.

Oh I'm sorry, poor Bonnie (poor you  )

Sounds like Bonnie's putting up a fight, though. Mouse whacking is a good sign.

Hopefully there will be something they can do for her on Monday - sounds like your vet is pulling out all the stops.  :crossed:

Cheers everyone.

She's on the up part of the rollercoaster at the moment - had 2 pouches of food since 5.00 a.m. and I've laid on the bed with her all day stroking and kissing her.  She's been purring like crazy and about 1/2 a hour ago she came into the spare bedroom to lay on top of all my ironing that needs to done so I thought I'd come in here and come on Purrs for a bit.

Thanks very much to all of you great friends.

No they've not taken her BP or a blood test - maybe they know that will not give them the answer?

I don't like to push them but on Friday I had to ask what was the point in her going back on the meds if she was gonna go downhill again when she stops taking them.  She seems to think they will know more when they see her tomorrow - I ruddy well hope so.

I can't wait for her to be running around having a 'daft half hour' and playing with her toys and even scratching the settee and the sofa bed

I promise lots of photos Liz  ;)

You must push them Mary and ask questions..............like why no BP. why take teeth out, what is wrong with her etc etc.

Write down loads of questions, you need to have a handle on what they are thinking and why  and what meds are they giving.

Its so much to take in and remember when stressed.

To me and I am no expert or vet but black blood is old blood and sounds like she is bleeding somewhere and its leaking into or behind her eye.............question is where is she bleeding from...........a damaged or burst blood vessel?

There has to be a reason why they are doing what they are doing and where they are heading and they need to find out what is bleeding and stop it.........two weeks now??

Hope tomorrow goes well

Post by: maryas on October 31, 2011, 00:08:28 AM
Yes I agree Gill - it's actually 3 weeks  :(

They did say the teeth might be causing it because they are bad and on Friday she said an eye scan might be advisable to see if it's something behind the eye that's causing it.

The black blood has gone now and it's fresh blood at the bottom of her eye.

I will ask more questions tomorrow.

Ta chuck.

Thanks everyone.

Eddie examined her eye again and this is the 1st time that she hasn't flinshed.

He checked her heart and gave her body a good feel and also closed the blinds and had a good look in her eye.

He's almost certain it's not thyroids and he said that a scan of her eye might not show anything, it could be a virus which is needing more antibiotics than first thought or it could be her kidneys.

He's taken a blood sample from the front of her neck/throat - small bald patch to grow back. It should be a week to get the results and then he can hopefully treat her for something he knows is wrong with her.

The blood is just at the bottom of her eye and it's red and it's been like that since Friday and he seems to think it might stay like that  She could also see out of it better today too.

Call me stupid but I dont see how kidneys or thyroid are causing something to bleed onto her eye, if is red blood then its new blood and presumably the bleeding is still happening.

Maybe you should ask to be referred to a specialist or at the very least your vet should talk with one?

Sounds like Eddie is fishing in the dark and to be frank doesnt have a clue.

I do hope for Bonnies sake eddie goes away and consults someone, I would not be very happy if it was my cat.

Sending loads of good vibes to Bonnie

Call me stupid but I dont see how kidneys or thyroid are causing something to bleed onto her eye,

Not as daft as it sounds Gill.  As has already been mentioned by others, high blood pressure is a common cause of bleeding into the eye in cats and unlike humans who can get high BP for no apparent reason, in cats it usually has an identificable cause, the most common being hyperthyroidism or renal disease.  Diabetes can also cause bleeding into the eye.   A blood test is easy to do and is a sensible first step in determining whether any of these are present and will also show if other parameters are abnormal.  More specific and difficult to perform tests can then follow if necessary.  I am a bit surprised that it takes a week to get the results though - even the NHS isn't that slow.

Sending lots of good wishes and positive vibes for Bonnie and plenty of these for you Mary.

But unless Mary hasnt said , BP hasnt been taken and eye test isnt being done, only bloods and I feel that BP should have been taken at the beginning. I know I was lucky but back in London there was an eye vet attached to my vets so when Kocka had a problem her eyes were examined almost straight away

I agree a very long time for them to come back and at my vets I think its done on the premises unless there is a special test being done.

What really worries me is that it soon will be 4 weeks since this started.

We have Max who jas just been diagnosed as Hyper thyroid and he is on tablets for another 11 days till we get him blood tested again to see when he can have his op

The blood pressure test is a waste of time if the cat is slightly stressed in anyway Max's was through the roof as was Caspers and he is a laid back ragdoll

The bloods can be done in house but the Hyper T test takes about 5 days to be done when sent away so thats about right really, thats what Max's was it was sent to Glasgow for a full panel as well as all the inhouse tests and some things can be masking the real issue so a full panel is a must

We can only hope that the Antibiotics work and we are sending :hug:s from all of us here at the Clan

Thanks for your comments everyone.  Problem with me is that I've never had a cat that's been ill.  Tibby was 26 and never ill, Smudge was never ill when he went missing and then I found him dead after a rta.

Because I have no experience I do not really know what to expect and Eddie has been a partner at the surgery for over 20 years and everyone speaks highly of him.  If she was in pain and not eating etc. I would really push for some quicker answer but I guess I'm going by how things are with humans and when we go to the doctor they give us something and then go back in 2 weeks cos it's not working and then they try somet else.

Bonnie's BP hasn't been taken but I guess he doesn't think it necessary - he does check her heart each time and I suppose that is related to BP?

Gill, the long time is bugguing me and that's why I mentioned it to Sally on Friday and again Eddie today about not having her on abs again and then stoping them only to have her go back to the begining. Maybe he wishes he'd done a blood test sooner but thought the abs would clear it up.

If only cats could talk and tell us how things happened and then we could treat them straight away without having to try things step by step.

 :thanks: everyone.

:censored: I can't believe how many ups and downs I'm having with Bonnie.

When I brought her home on Monday we cuddled on the bed in the afternoon and she was ok at night too - even jumped on my keyboard on my desk  :wow:  But then I realised she had not had anything to eat or drink.

About 1.30 a.m. I was boiling cod, didn't want it, tin of tuna, didn't want it, chicken in white sauce, didn't want it. 3 flavours of gourmet, didn't want it.

All day Tuesday was the same and now she was walking around really slowly and not wanting to jump on the bed - I lifted her up on to the bed and she scratched me and jumped down.  I tried to get tablets in her mouth with her not eating her food and I had no luck.

Took her to the vet today and checked her eye and she didn't flinsh or pull away once, so clearly not hurting her.  Gave her 2 injections and said to bring her back on Monday but if she doesn't eat this evening/tonight or tomorrow morning to take her back tomorrow afternoon.

And the good news is her blood results are back and there is nothing wrong with her.  :Luv2:

Sorry to hear this Mary, it's such a worry when they won't eat isn't it  Is there anything that you eat that she tries to steal normally (for my boys it's crispy duck and the only time they are locked out while I eat it!) - even if it's something not great nutrionally it's a means to an end to get food in her tummy and kick start her appetite

Good news about the blood results though  :)

The point is Mary, there is something wrong with her! What is the vet doing, is he speaking to a specialist, this shouldnt be allowed to continue without him finding out what is wrong................you will be beating yourself up if it is something serious that could have been helped if caught early enough, please dont let this ride.

She is bleeding from somewhere and as you say she is going up and down.......is she insured? She needs to get the right treatment not just loads of abs which are being given hit or miss.

Oh Mary.  What a worry.

I can't help thinking myself it might be appropriate to ask the vet for a blood pressure test, simply to rule out the possibility this is causing the haemorrhaging.  It can be linked to retina detachment, and that's often caused by high blood pressure.    It's very difficult to know what to do when you get conflicting advice, and it's easy for us to chip in when we're not in your shoes, but is it worth asking the vet why he doesn't feel it's necessary to undertake a BP and eye test?

Hoping Bonny is feeling better today.  And sending a hug to you too

Kocka had detached retinas due to BP and had the BP problem been known earlier the absolute mini bit of a pill could have gome in her food with no problem and she was a cat who couldnt be pilled.

However she did not have any bleeding visable but suddenly she went blind and the eyes were just fully black and then the sight came back and she used to get very upset cos the retinas used to flap back and forth so she could see, then would go blind etc etc.

The eye specialist vet knew exactly what the problem was by looking in Kockas eyes.

I do hope you can get this sorted for Bonnie

Well my little Bonnie Bum is on the top of the Rollercoaster at the moment - she's had 1 1/2 tons of Gourmet Gold today and some Dreamies and water today.

Last night she was up and down on the bed and walking all over me.  She was meowing at the door which meant she wanted some grass - so I went and got some nice grass for her from the gardena nd she ate it. She is never sick after eating grass and she wasn't this time either.

Susanne I think it will always be a mystery as to what happened to bring all this on.  A bit like me when I was 3 years old - my ankle was hurting and nothing could be done to get rid of the pain - they finally opened my leg up and I had osteomiltis (deseased bone) and in 1963 they didn't know much about it so I had ops every year until the final one in 1976 that cured me.

Thanks again for all your best wishes and cuddles etc.

Hi Mary,
Just speed reading what's happening with Bonnie, so many apologies if I've missed a post. Glad she's eaten something...
A blood pressure check is vital! This MUST be done on a basis of taking her in, letting her settle down, and doing it and no other treatment/bloods or messing with her beforehand, and this WILL affect her blood pressure reading.  I have nursed with a LOT of poor vets, so it's imperative you find a good vet. Agatha was hyperthyroid and hypertensive, and after a few weeks getting the  balance right on Istin (and hyper-T treatment), she was absolutely fine. I see quite a few high blood pressure cats coming through which we check, and detached retinas are fairly common in older cats, but can be rectified if treatment is sought as soon as possible. I would urge you to find a good cat vet for future visits with Bonnie... or ask for a referral. You are so obviously prepared to care for her the best you can, so a good vet is one to hang on to! All vets are good/interested in different things, I know the vet I use is amazing with our cats and rabbits, so I always use her, but for the dogs I use a different vet, because he is particularly fab with canines!
Got everything crossed Bonnie improves quickly, and sending a big hug your way...
Liz

Following on from her blood test results which were good the vet decided today that she needed her blood pressure taking.  It showed to be high 220 instead of 180 and she's now on pills for it - go back in 4 weeks and hopefully it'll show that they are working.  Vet said it will clear her eye up and she will be able to see more clearly too.

Great news Mary, hopefully things will improve much now.  We think that our Pep went blind due to high bp which was only picked up when he was handed over for homing.  Glad that it's been checked out

Great news! We had to balance Agatha out using 1/8 Istin one day, 1/6 Istin next... took a little getting the balance right, and some highly accurate pill cutting!! But we were also dealing with hyperthyroidism with her, too, which made it hard work getting the balance of drugs right! I see a fair few BP cases coming through... not always picked up on or tested for by the vets and can have terrible consequences...
SO pleased she's getting sorted  :) and more relief for you

Our Pep was initially on 1/8 of Istin (he was also hyperthyroid) but since his thyroid has stabilised his bp has also been fine. Yes they are a nightmare to cut aren't they!! I got a pill cutter - which was hopeless, I found the best thing was a sharp kitchen knife.

Thanks everyone.

I must be special (or maybe it's Bonnie they like!) - the nurses cut them for me.  They look pretty good too so I'll have to ask them when I go back what they use.

It's Istin Bonnie's on.

Mike told me there isn't one for cats so they use human ones and cut them into 4.  So if it's gonna cost me a fortune I might have a word with my doctor cos I don't pay for prescriptions with being a full time carer for my mum.  ;) :naughty: I'm on Simvistatin and Amlodipine.

Love Mary and a much happier Bonnie Bum xx

Mary, amlodipine is Istin (Istin is the trade name whereas amlodipine is its chemical name) so you are both on the same thing.  However, there are different strengths and Bonniewill be on a fraction of the lowest dose tablet which I think from memory is a 5 mg tablet.  The most common strength used in adult humans is 10 mg so be careful if you decide to use your medication for Bonnie.

So glad you have got something sorted and hope she does well and stabilised easily on the tablets.

:thanks: Carol, seems crazy we are on the same meds

You are right, the pills are 5 mg, cut into 4 that I got from the vet.

My tablets are Amlodipine - 5mg and Simvastatin 40mg.

I will definately check before even thinking of giving any to her. Cheers chuck.

Little helper:

If the tablets go in food, you can grind them up in that old pestle and mortar you've been looking at for 20 years, then make a "line" - pretend like you're in the movies and cutting a bit of "Charlie"

This lets you measure quite accurately any fraction of a pill, so if only a quarter is needed, shape your line to an inch long then just nip a quarter inch off and put it in the food.

Pop the rest into a paper knottie with the fraction remainder written on (eg 3/4) so next time you know how much to nip off.

Don't I got a good vet?

I know I know - just watch far too much telly for my own good.

I think it would be very, very funny to have a mirror with lines of amlodipine on the coffee table when vicar/MP comes for tea, then try to explain...it's for the cat...

Hope the meds work, however you choose to administer them  ;)

Mogs was 1/4 Istin tablet for years so I used a pill cutter. Rather fiddly though but she was great about taking them as they obviously made her feel better. In fact we got to the point where when she needed her blood pressure checking the vet used to ask if they could 'borrow' her for new people to practise on as she just sat down and stuck a leg out for them  :Luv:
I hope Bonnie is feeling loads better soon

Exactly what I used to do with Sam's BP tabs, after too many times of pinging bits of pill around the kitchen when trying to cut them lol!  :evillaugh:

Cutting pills usually means the pieces can be (often are) different sizes so best to only cut up one pill at a time  to try and ensure as even a dose as possible  :shy:

So very very pleased that the reason for Bonnie's illness has been discovered  :) :) :) but sad to hear that this condition is often missed.
Title: Re: Bonnie's been ill since 8th October
Post by: tab on November 08, 2011, 16:53:32 PM
I used to get webbox sticks and break a bit off and squish it in my fingers until soft then wrap it around the tablet. That could have been why if Mogs for some reason didnt want to jump onto the chair for me Amber used to herd her so she could have a tabletless treat  :evillaugh:

Title: Re: Bonnie's been ill since 8th October
Post by: maryas on November 18, 2011, 00:20:41 AM
Extremely well thanks.  i take her back to the vet in a few weeks to see if her BP has gone down and if the tablets are working then she wwill be on them for the rest of her life.

I thik they are working cos her eye looks so different now, it's what I call very diluted looking blood at the bottom of her eye.  She's not in any pain and she's jumping all over me in bed and last night she even tried sleeping on my back instead of cuddling in to the side of me.  She's coming downstairs more and sitting in front of the fire and on the settee.  She's meeting me at the door and meowing when her plate is empty or meowing at the door when she wants me to go out and get her some grass - looking a bit bad now so I've bought some cat grass for her. ;)

I would say she's 99% back to being my little Bonnie Bum    :Luv2:

It's her birthday and adoption day on 15th December so I hope she is fully recovered for then, mind you I will be in Prague 14th - 16th so will have to celebrate with her when I get back.  Her Auntie Joyce (my mate) will be looking after her so she will make sure she gets extra Dreamies for her 14th birthday and her 4th Adoption Day.

Hello Mary darling, sorry I've not been on for ages and missed all this!!!

Glad Bonniebum is doing better, and very glad the vets did a blood pressure test, would have been the first thing I'd have suggested if I'd seen this sooner!  With Maxy he had a couple of burst blood vessels but  his pressure was never checked, really wish I'd known!!!  The blood bit can take ages and ages to fade by the way, so don't panic!!

Lots of love to you both xxx

Took her for her blood Pressure taking today and it's no longer too high, it's too chuffing low

Took Bonnie for her BP check up today and it's high again so the vet has changed her to 1/4 of a tablet every day instead of every other day and I take her back in 2 months.

She's as fit as a fiddle in herself so let's hope this works.

OMG no, in 2 months time, that means I will just have got back from Italy and then taking her to the vet - she's not going to be my friend  ;)

Denise - she'll be getting Dreamies ever day from my friend while I'm in Italy - she really look after Bonnie while I'm away.  Joyce only works mornings so she comes down to see her before work and in the afternoon and evening comes and plays with her and feeds her etc.  She loves her Auntie Joyce.  Think I might have to buy some fish for her when I take her to the vet  ;)
