Hi
I lost my cat 2 years ago, he was only 2 at the time and I didnt feel I could take on another cat until now. Anyway I have been to see two cats today and I really am torn as to which one. I'm looking for opinions.
The first is a ginger boy, very affectionate. He apparantly is very laid back and a bit lazy as he sleeps mostly during the day but when I saw him he was very alert and came out of the pen to greet me. The second is a shy female, very affectionate too. They are both aged 5 and lived together but the rescue has since realised they dont really get on as the boy bullied the girl so they want to get her to come out of her shell, which she did when I went into the pen, she came out of her housebed for strokes and was purring and licking my hand.
So, I work and there will be no-one in the house for 4 days a week. I wouldnt want them out whilst I was at work but if they did not come back before I left I have a catflap into my shed as a bit of shelter and I would put a bed in there. Dont think the female would want that somehow, and its likely she would only go out for short periods if at all. The male though, I've only ever had males that wanted to go out. Not sure if he would just sleep as they said or want to go/stay out?
They were left behind when the owners moved house so they cannot tell me if they were indoor/outdoor. I dont know which one would be better to live with me....
-
I'm not sure anyone can answer this question for you, Debbie
all I can say is, if I couldn't choose between two cats needing homes, I would adopt the one I and the rescue thought the less likely to be homed by someone else, and/or the one doing less well in its current placement
-
Agree with Trigger, only you can decide and I would go for the one that could be harder to rehome....and if they are both the same I would pick the cutest! LOL!
At 5 they are probably both content to be lazing around all day. I wouldn't be too worried about the boy wanting to be out a lot.... not all boys do. Mine is never happier than when he is snuggled on a bed, even in summer! And when it is winter, well, we are lucky if he is out for more than 15 minutes! It was the girl who was always out regardless of the weather or temperature!
The girl cat may be more of a "project" - may need more work to get her confidence up and if you are out a lot it may not be ideal.
-
Fair comment, I thought I would get a similar reply. I always seem to want them all when I get there.
I'll think it over and then if they are reserved in the meantime then they werent the one for me.
-
You are very lucky just having to choose between two! When I went to look for a cat to adopt, there were about 15 and I nearly cried, so difficult it was.
Years ago when I went to the shelter to have a little calico, there was mum calico with two calico babies and I would have loved to take them all three but neutering 3 females, couldn't afford it.
So I had this woman taking the two kittens in her hands behind her back and then put one on the table. Out came Noa, not my first choice in appearance, but she turned out such a sweet darling!!
So let your heart decide and I think fate has it's own way.
-
Before I began rescue work I went to the kennels seeking a rescue dog, when I arrived i couldnt look at the dogs I merely said " Give me the one thats been here the longest that nobone else wants" I took Winnie home there and then and began my rescue work less than a week later, should add at that point I was terrified of cats we soon overcame that.
Good Luck with your decision.
-
I was terrified of cats we soon overcame that.
And have you ever!!!
-
I am glad it's not only me then Woodlandcats. Whilst I was there I was in and out of each pen as I couldnt make up my mind. The guy said he always brings out one puppy when a female is there choosing her new dog, if he brings out any more and she has to choose he is there all day! I kinda had to agree with him...
I think I'm erring on the the boy cat, I've always had boys and he was just so big and gorgeous he was like a cuddly bear! when I was looking at the female he meowed in the pen behind me as if to say hey dont forget I'm still here!
-
:welcome: back Debbie, I remember when Sam went missing  Glad you've felt able to let another furball into your life
Whichever one you choose they'll be the lucky one that's for sure :)

Seconded from me! :Luv:

:shify: There really is only one solution here...
take them both ;)
-
I thought that too Amy! :sneaky: ;)

I have since been told they will not re-home me only one cat as I am at work during the day. So I went to see them both today and whilst they dont fight they dont bother with each other neither so I am not sure why I have to have them both instead of only one as I think they would still be 'lonely' even if I took them both if one was always in and one was out?
I hadnt really planned on having two and I'm not sure my finances could cover having two so I was dithering on the phone to her when she said actually they had a reserve on them anyway! Not sure if she was saying that to get me to decide or put me off altogether as she said the person whom had reserved them would take any pair of cats they had in...
So I went another shelter and they said they would only rehome me a cat over 5yo that they knew would be ok left alone for long hours. Another one wanted me to have a cat flap into the house which I cannot have as it is a patio door. I am surprised anyone gets to rehome cats these days with all these conditions. I totally understand that it would be quite solitary to be left alone each day but I thought cats slept more than humans? That was the reason I was looking for an adult cat (5yrs+).
I think I better put it on a backburner until I work part time or win the lottery and dont have to work altogether....
-
this saddens me, and is not the first time someone has been put off by too many conditions IMO
I have twice had a sole kitten which I left at home alone five days a week whilst I worked full time - neither came to any harm, or had any behavioural problems
and neither Tiffany or Trigger would mind at all if the other disappeared tomorrow, even though they have shared this house for 6 years
-
That's disappointing :( I iknow they only have the cats' best interest at heart but how many single adult cats are there in households where people work full time - I'd hazard a guess it's a very large majority!
There's quite a few cat from rescues on Purrs needing homes - Polish sounds like a gorgeous boy...

I am so sad to hear this: OH and I both work a lot more than full time - and always have done - and our Blip is happy and well-adjusted. Try another rescue
-
Thanks for your replies, I was starting to think I was being unreasonable in my expectations of re-homing a cat as I've been to 3 separate shelters now and each have their own different conditions. I got home and was so upset, as after the second time of seeing the male cat again I really fell for his charm :(
-
We both work full time too and Samson seems fine with that arrangement. He's such a pampered puss when we are at home that I think he secretly likes his 8 hour break from all that fuss :evillaugh:
Definately approach other rescues or see if there's anyone listed on here who could be your next feline friend.
-
I wonder if the rescue you went to first was trying it on a bit with you, Debbie, as they sensed an opportunity to rehome two cats
I would be inclined to go back and say you definitely want the male cat and only the male cat, like it or lump it - I think it might well work :sneaky:
-
this is so shortsighted of those rescues and i also wonder if they are seriosuly trying to rehome. do not give up but do make sure you know all conditionsa before looking at cats, so you dont lose heart
-
I can never decide which cat either before we got Pepper there were so many needing homes and if I go to a rescue I always go for oldies but I'm like Teresa was and always say which is overlooked and least likely to get a home, I hate seeing them all because I can't stop thinking about them. Whilst I was undecided over a few Pepper came up he was to be pts and so I enquired about him and he has been with us 7wks now.
-
I thought so too Trigger which is why I went back a second time then telephoned the rescue again today (the cats are off site in a cattery). I did try all my powers of persuasion to get just the male cat but she was adamant she would only re-home me two, no matter if they were close or not which kind of defeats the object really if they are not close with each other IMO.
Gill I spoke with the rescue people first before I went to see the cats and they said they could go separate as they werent close. It was only after I had been to see the cats that I was asked about my working hours and then the about-turn on only offering me both.
I wont, but it makes me want to be economical with the truth of how much I'm out during the day :shify:
-
I think that's so wrong >:(- I would be really worried about leaving two cats who were strangers to each other in the house while I was out - what if one really bullied the other?
-
I think some of this :shify: :shify: :shify: may be helpful ;)
-
This has really bothered me and it doesn't even affect me! I've been home tonight and my 2 x two year olds (brothers, who do get on/love each other) have spent the last 5 hours curled up in separate spots snoozing the night away, and that's with me being home - I would imagine they have done the same during the 9 hours I was at work!
I think it's really sad that they're denying another cat the same pleasure :( I do think that in the case of young kittens with full time working owners that it's much better to go in pairs and in an ideal world adult cats would have a cat friend to share the home with (if they were cat friendly) but it's so short sighted to knock back what otherwise sounds like a great, loving home just because you're out at work full time >:(
-
Aw! Dont let this bad experience put you off Debbie....There are lots of cats and rescues looking for a purrrfect cat mum like you!
-
how riduclous, keeping a cat costs money and so you need a job, this is just the sort of thing that sends people to petshops and freeads
-
IMHO each cat is different and each home is different so it seems a bit red-tapey to have such strict rules.
One rescue I know has the most adorable little deaf white cat in their care. She's very playful and friendly, the kind of cat you'd love to see playing with responsible kids. However this cat won't be allowed to go where there are any kids under any circumstances because "you can guarantee the kids will let her out and she'll get run over because she's deaf".
I know rescues have the cats' interests at heart but seeing this bouncy little thing in a pen does upset me a bit.
Whereabouts are you Debbie? If you're in Derbyshire, come and see the cats at Ashfield ;-) , subject to usual homechecks I'm sure we could match you up!
Have a look at http://www.catchat.org/topcats too

Here, here....and what a sickener for any rescue on here to view as Im sure they would agree that they are laying a path to those ads because of their silly standards!
-
Hi Amy
I am quite far from Derbyshire, im nr Manchester in Cheshire. He's probably not there anymore but Charlie looked lush on the Catchat page of yours, he is similar to the one I was refused :)

Debbie
Why not send Teresa (Pawcats) a PM? She's in Weaverham. Her standards are the highest but she's not doctrinaire

Paws Inn Cats are gorgeous and have the added bonus of Minipop training and of course all the love and care Auntie T gives them and if you aren't faraway from Aunty T then go to Paws Inn master Ripley came from there and Garcia is on my kidnap list!
-
couldn't agree more - Teresa is an absolute life saver for homeless kitties
-
Hmmm Charlie does appear to have been on there an awful long time. He's certainly not at the shelter anymore but I'm wondering if he's not been taken down due to being in foster care. I'll check for you over the weekend and the page will be fully updated next week.
I'd third, fourth and fifth the idea of a Paws Inn resident for you. I'm sure it's better for you and your new pusscat to be in the same area.
If Charlie is still available you'd probably just need to get a local CP check done but I do have a feeling he might have just slipped thorugh the net and is probably curled up on someone's bed by now.
-
How about Mika who is currently with Bonnielass and would prefer a home without other cats.......well, it's worth a try pointing her out!

There are so many deserving cases around I'm sure you'll find the perfect match.

I've sent the poster of Timmy a pm as I have a few questions :)
-
sounds promising ;D
-
Did you decide Tarzan was too far away then, Debbie? (Sorry, not hounding you - just thought you'd look at this thread more than Tarzans.)
-
Hi
I left my details about Tarzan following your message but nobody contacted me. I've been in touch with the poster of Timmy and I'm just waiting for a further response. I dont want to mess people about so it's now probably best I wait until she gets back to me with her reply first.
Thanks for asking though :shy:
-
hope you get sorted soon either way if you don't hear back from anyone I'd contact pawsinn, Teresa is very speedy at getting back to people!!
-
:wish: Have everything crossed for you and whichever lucky cat you choose!
-
Good luck Debbie!
-
Debbie, if you are interested in Tarzan PM me your phone number and I'll send it to Nicky. She's really busy but tends to read my emails pretty quickly due to me doing her site for her. ;)
