I am so sorry to read this. It is an enormous responsibility we have, to sometimes have to make difficult decisions about what is best for our loved ones. I think everyone on here feels for you, and I hope you will be all right, even if it must feel very empty right now.

Goodbye dear friend, you've set me free
From any pain and misery
Of aching joints and failing heart
I know it's time for us to part
You made that choice to let me go
My time has come, this I know
Long and hard you fought, you tried
Oh dear friend I know you've cried
There are some fights that can't be fought
Old age is one, youth can't be bought
No pills, no cures for passing years
Our eyes do dim as do our ears
No magic wand can 'eer bring back
That precious thing we both do lack
The will to live, to stand and fight
There is no wrong, there is no right
In meadows green I will run
To you I know I was a son
A cat I was, not a child
Now I'm free, I can run wild
That bond between us will always stay
Even though I'm far away
'Til day is done for you I'll wait
Just outside of heavens' gate
My guide has come to lead me home
Where in green fields I'm free to roam
My aches have gone, my ills they mend
In that place, called Rainbow's End

THE VISITOR

In the silent, secret hours
Of a frozen, moonlit night,
Whilst you slumber fitfully, tearfully,
Broken by grief -
The soft, unseen footsteps of a phantom feline
Will tiptoe through your dreams.

When all the world is sleeping
I shall fill your empty heart with gentle memories,
And rest again, warm in the safety of your arms.

And when you awake,
Confused by sleep, half-remembering,
You will feel the parting, velvet imprint
Of my muzzle against your cheek,
And you will know
I am at peace.

He pulled me up and saved me,
     From the misery and pain.
My body was hurt so badly inside,
I could never be the same.

My search is really over now,
     I've found happiness within,
All the answers to my empty dreams
And all that might have been.

I love you and I miss you so,
     and I'll always be nearby.
My body's gone forever,
But my spirit will never die!

And so, you must  go on now,
live one day at a time.
Just understand-
God did not take me from you,
He only took my hand."

Oh Helen - I'm so sorry   Most of us on here have been through the same thing at some point so now how awful you must be feeling.  I feel I knew Tiggy so well through you and have a real lump in my throat right now.  She will be missed by all of us, but that's nothing compared to how you must be feeling.  I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that your care of her over the past few years undoubtably extended her life and that she lived a long and happy life due to you.  Letting her go before she suffered too much was the last thing you were able to do for her.  I'm glad she enjoyed her life right up until the end, especially her tent!

RIP Tiggy  :Luv:

You know we're all here for you, Helen.

Oh Helen, so sorry - not the news I wanted.

If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
When this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

We've had so many happy years ,
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer.
So, When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend.
Only stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you, too, will see,
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve it should be you.
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years......Don't let your heart hold any tears

I hope you are having the day off today, you need it.

Thinking of you at this awful time

She's gone.... The vet found a lump in her small intestine, she just lay on the table with her head down after he'd felt for it - I looked into her eyes and knew that she couldn't fight any more so I let her go.

I opened this thread with a heavy heart when I saw who had started it and am reading it with tears in my eyes.  There are no words to describe how much I feel for you, Helen.  I'm hoping she picks up and there is something the vet can do, but if not you know her better than anyone and will know when the time's right to let her go.  You've given her a wonderful life.  I'll be thinking of you today.
