I can see its very frustrating.  I will definitely be feeling the same if Honey doesnt stay ok on this food.  Even then I am dubious as to if it is a food alergy.  Our vet said to leave her on Hills d/d for 3 or 4 weeks after she comes off the steroids and then maybe test her back on her normal food and watch her like a hawk.

Have you considered seeing a holistic vet?  I don't know what else to suggest but when it comes to allergies like this a non conventional approach sometimes works best.  Alternatively I can only think of trial and error with different foods such as single proteins to see if you can identify a food she's allergic to.

I really don't know what to do now!  Our vet said previously that she does not know how to take Maisy's case any further which is why she referred us but I am confussed as to why they could not test for food allergy as I understood that was what we were going for.  The specialist also said there is now no point in keeping her on dietry food just the steroids.

Hi Marie

It sounds like it was a bit of a waste of time then going to see the specialist.  But I suppose you know now its not anything that they have tested for.  Are you going back to see your normal vet again?

Honey isnt doing too bad.  She hasnt had a colar on at all and the patch on her head is almost cleared up.  Just a small scab left to come off.  Although I have caught her scratching round her head and neck but havent been able to find any other scabs or anything yet.

She is Ok on the Hills d/d at the moment and I also got her the dry version on Wednesday when I went to the vets.  We are going back again on Thursday and then hopefully she will come off the steroids.  She is now down to one every other day.

Hi Claire,

Well where to start??? Our vet eventually after various other treatments said Maisy had a food allergy and put her on d/d venison and green pea which she has been on for just over 8 weeks and there has been no improvement.  Previous to this as her condition has been ongoing now for over 5 months we have tried steroids, creams, a biopsy and blood tests (as she was only scratching one area) nothing stopped her scratching.  We would go 6 weeks with the collar on take it off and she would scratch and so the circle would go on.

I understood from my vet that instead of playing the trial and error game with food to find out what Maisy was allergic to we could go to the vet school and have these tests done.  When I get there I am told that they cannot test for food allergy only element allergy i.e. grass, dust etc.  My poor Maisy has been shaved and pin prick tested with 45 things and it all came back negative.  As this was negative we then had to pay for bloods tests, I am not sure when or how we will get the results of these.  Basically we travelled to Bristol, spent £450 and have been sent away with steroids and over the counter human allergy/hey fever tables for her.  We have been told to take her collar off in a week when hopefully the steroids have kicked in although this is a path we have tried many times before and she has just continued to scratch.  I just hope we can claim the money back through our insurance as the whole thing was very badly organised and the paperwork I have received from them very poor.  All in all I do not feel any closer to an answer to Maisy's scratching than before we went and really do not know what to do next.

I hope Honey improves on the food, how is she on the steroids? our Maisy became very quiet and withdrawn which is why our vet wanted to find a solution without keeping her on the steroids.  At the end of it all I just feel more confused than before.

Hi Marie

I just wondered how you cat (was it Maisy) got on at the specialist yesterday.  I am the owner of the other cat (Honey) that our vet thinks has a food alergy.  I took her back yesterday and the vet has asked me to take her back next week too.  She has to have one steroid tablet every other day now.

The vet also said that I need to keep her on Hills dd for a further 3 or 4 weeks after she comes off the steroids.  We may then be able to test her back on her normal food and see what happens.  Would need to keep a close eye on her though.

Claire
