Title: Smokie has had her babies!!
Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on May 28, 2007, 12:57:21 PM: Smokie has finally given birth :attention: I think she's had two babies, I can't see properly as she's covered herself up with newspaper and her bed :Luv: :Luv: I will let her settle down a bit and try and get a proper look later. She seems to be acting like a proud mummy and has let me give her a big fuss and all seems to be well :Luv: :Luv: She's not long had them so there may still be more ;D

Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on May 29, 2007, 14:30:25 PM: I've had a chat with the vets this morning and they think it's a good idea for Katie to take on some of the brood. Because Smokie has only recently had kittens, 7 may be too much to rear. The vet has told me to do it gradually, ie allow Katie with some for a short time and then place them back with mum for the collostrum and then repeating the process over the next couple of days and obviously keeping an eye on her until I'm happy that she's okay with them.

Poor Smokie, everytime she stands up, she's got a baby dangling from her :heeee heeee:

Smokie and babes are all doing fine, I'm going to try Katie with 3 later, they can then go back on mum for a bit and then back to Katie and see how it goes. The collostrum is usually the first 24 hours but some can still get through afterwards so ideally I want them on the milk before I transfer them over.........Katie will be over the moon, she is such a little darling and soooooo loveable with kittens :Luv: :Luv:

Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on May 31, 2007, 11:39:19 AM: I tried Katie with 3 last night and all she kept do was washing their bums :sigh: She attempted to roll over a couple of times but because the kittens didn't try to latch on, she got fed up. I tried her again earlier and she's still the same, I'm going to attempt it a couple more times, if not, I'll have to rule it out and just hope Smokie is up to rearing them. If the kittens are not all growing at the same rate, I'll give top up feeds and hopefully that will give Smokie a bit of a break.

Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on June 14, 2007, 19:00:33 PM: Just had to take Smokie's kittens to the vets, they are fine in themselves but have opened their eyes in the last couple of days and all eyes are bad :'( No gunk or anything, but some are just red, some you can't really see properly, and one kittens eye has ruptured :'( Sean has said this would have happened in the womb and it's something Smokie has passed onto them via the placenta.........not sure what the outcome will be but chances are some will lose their eyes :'( In times like this, I wish I had listened to him and just got her spayed whilst I had the chance and all this could have been avoided :( He's given them all an antibiotic jab and some drops to go in their eyes, not sure what good it will do but it possible some may be alright. He said now their eyes are open, chances are all the gunk and crap will appear so at least we have a slight chances of sorting them but the one with the ruptured eye will probably lose that one.

Years ago we had some feral kittens with a very similar sounding condition - they all came through absolutely fine. Fingers crossed for them.

That's good to hear, I know one has definitely lost her eye as it's perforated :( Their eyes are really weird looking......and they seem quite far in as well but Sean said hopefully some eyes may be okay but we'll have to wait and see. He wants to see them all again next week and he can judge it better then after some treatment.

I would think so, the kittens he has are Smokies anyway and will be indoor babes so it shouldn't be a problem, I'll try and speak to him tomorrow. Also, when she goes in to be spayed, she can be blood tested to make sure nothing is showing up. In themselves, they seem healthy.......whatever it is is something that Smokie has been carrying whilst pregnant but she isn't showing any signs of anything. I suppose it could also be down to inbreeding as well, she's had a few litters apparently but most usually die as she was leaving them all over the yard. I thought maybe she was just a bad mum but maybe they had something wrong with them as well......it's hard to say, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

From what I remember our kittens' eyes looked cloudy and white and sort of sunken and dimpled. Main thing is you've got them treatment straight away so they will have the best chance to fight back.

Sean thinks a couple of them will be completely blind and possibly the others blind in one eye......it's a case of wait and see. He said not to make any future plans for them at the moment just in case they don't survive :'( At the moment, they are bouncy and healthy but because the infection was contained and their eyes were closed, it's possible that it can still turn into a meningitus type thing and go onto their brain, fingers crossed this won't happen as they are still on treatment and he said to continue treatment for the time being. They are due to go back in next Tuesday for a check up and maybe he can decide then, who is going to need what doing. He said if peeps got their cats vaccinated, this could possibly have been avoided :( I am also on a bit of a guilt trip, if I'd have had her done when I got her in even though she was pregnant, this could also have been avoided and the kittens wouldn't be facing an uncertain future :'(

I don't agree with aborting but with all the illness etc that these ferals carry, I think I have learnt my lesson and even though I hate to say it, I've moved round to Sean's way of thinking and pregnant or not, I now think they should be done :'(

I'm going through exactly the same decision now with the second mum from Liverpool. Took her to the Vet yesterday and he cannot say for definite if she is pregnant or not. I have booked her in for spaying Friday week, but I feel so guilty if she is pregnant that I am killing little babes and I look at Milly and her six and think I could be killing six more that could be just like them.

I am going to take her to the Vet again next Thursday to see if they can be any more precise on whether she is pregnant or not and then take it from there. Her last two kittens are so healthy and I think that someone could have got her spayed when she was pregnant with them and then they wouldn't exist, which does not seem right.

This is how I always think but this way of thinking has put all these kittens in jeopardy and I think in hindsight, I wished I'd let my head do the thinking instead of letting my heart take over :(

They are playing and eating now but things could still go wrong. Sean said this morning, if we manage to get these to pull through and they are rehomed, to make sure they go in pairs as they will need a lot of support and they will get this off each other, as well as off their new "slaves". I think on the whole, he is pleased with them but it's still a case of wait and see.

I know it's early days but they are all showing positive signs and have been charging round the lounge tonight, one of the little black/white ones has a thing for catnip and was rolling round ecstatically on a little catnip mouse that Lainey brought over for them :cat laugh: They are all utterly gorgeous and blind or not, they seem to be very happy and I'm sure they'll cope really well :Luv: :Luv:

Millly with the six babies is fine and they are all getting to the crawling stage now so another week and they will be everywhere :rofl:

Tia with the two babies is okay. I did not get her done as the Vet thought on second visit she was probably further gone than we originally thought, so she is now trying to find somewhere to nest and it is always somewhere completely impractical and wherever she wants to go so do her two babies which is driving her and me mad. :rofl:

I promise I will try to get some piccies tonight and start a thread so you can watch their progress.

Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on July 23, 2007, 19:36:54 PM: Quick update on Smokie's babes, sadly it's not a very good one :sad no: Smokie is now down to two babies, both seem to be doing really well and seem happy and playful. They are both tiny and I weighed one the other day and it was 0.34 kg :Crazy: Her losing 5 out of the 7 was pretty upsetting but Sean did say not to make plans for them, although they were doing well, he still didn't think their outcome was good so if these 2 survive it will be a bonus. Smokie's been blood tested today as I was a little concerned as to if she was carrying something, but I'm glad to say she's FIV/FeLV negative and her bloods are spot on as well :) The fact she's had continual litters wouldn't have helped this last litter.......they tend to be weaker, the more litters they have and thankfully, this will be her last one now.

Post by: Dawn (DiddyDawn) on July 23, 2007, 20:03:04 PM: The most upsetting thing is she's tried to be such a good mum to them but sadly all in vain :'( Alarm bells rang for these as soon as they opened their eyes but they did seem lively for a few weeks. I also worry when they are sooo small, this is also an indication that something isn't quite right, the others just seemed to go down very quickly and they were on antibiotics at the time as well. Maybe if they'd have been bigger, their outcome would have been better but who knows :sad no:

I'll have to check on their age Sarah, but I think they're about 6 weeks now......I'll look it up later.

:Crazy: :Crazy: Just checked and they are 8 weeks old today. In the perfect world, they would now be ready to leave mum but they are wayyyyy too small, so she'll have to be stuck with them a bit longer and I'll have a chat with Sean to see what he recommends :sigh:

Poor babies Dawn, that is so sad, they must still be tiny. How are they walking etc?

Awww I'm really pleased to hear they're both doing okay :Luv: :Luv: The kittens will be going in to see Uncle Sean over the next few days and he can tell me when they'll be ready to leave mum. I know if I take them away now, they will die without support so I would be loathed to do so. As soon as Smokie has done her job, and she has been spayed, I will be in touch ;D Thanks for waiting so patiently for her Chris but I'm sure you'll love her just as much as you do Oscar and Charlie :Luv: :Luv:

I'm a little loathed to do this but he said she may be also transferring something in her milk to them and as long as they're eating, they should be okay :scared: He'll check them over anyway but that's what he's suggested. They are both eating on their own and they also have the Royal Canin kitten milk which is full of nutrients. So Smokie will be spayed asap.........well once kittens have been checked, and milk dried etc then she can go off to her new "slaves".

What do they say about the kittens eyes? Is it something that will clear up eventually or will it be a life-long problem? She looks like a little star :Luv:

If you look at Emily's right eye as you're looking at the pic, you will see the pupil is a weird shape as well..........not sure what's caused that but will ask Sean. I've got 2 in for spaying this morning, so if he's doing surgery later when I pick them up, I'll pop them along for a checkup and see what he says.

Smokie came from the scrapyard and has continually had kittens over the last 2 years so possibly inbreeding comes into it along the way as well. As soon as the kittens opened their eyes, it was obvious there was a problem with them. Because there was no infection beforehand, the damage has been done in the womb and passed onto the kittens via the placenta, possibly a virus or something that Smokie had or could possibly have been something to do with something in the scrapyard, we just don't know. Whatever it is has made them virtually blind and there is still a chance they will not make it. Smokies had blood tests done and she's all clear, so sadly we'll never know what's actually caused it. The main thing is, they remain healthy and get stronger and Smokie is spayed so no more babes have to go through what these have.

:) I work all but 2 hours (one hour on two days) a week from home and will be starting university in October but working on a dissertation, so again home all but a couple of hours a week.

It sounds like you're smitten to be honest - but she's a gorgeous wee lady and I'd love to have another baby here one day, seems silly to 'waste' an indoor only home on a mogger that could perfectly well be indoor/outdoor and off eating micies in the sunshine... instead of just shouting at em through the window like mines do :D

I know that, Ruth, that's why I said.

What I meant was that basically i'm on the lookout for an indoor only kitten BECAUSE I don't really want to make a potentially outdoor cat be indoor when they can't swap the other way round. (My garden not fenced yet but I'm saving up... pound by pound!)

Loving to bits and many many cuddles... norra problem! When do you think she will be ready to leave you, just so I can plan things out... I am a little bit busy to the end of August but then have 2 clear weeks to do absolutely nothing but spend quality time with my moggies ~~and write a dissertation proposal~~.

She'll have a job sorting that one out with my current girlies... :evillaugh: seriously tho - I've got a bit of family stuff and a couple of days where I won't be in the house for a whole long day so how about right at the start of September (like the 1st... literally!) or something instead?

They've met and interacted with 2 fosters so far with no problem at all - will of course follow usual cat-introducy protocols but I truly don't forsee any problems. Daffy and Letty are sisters and turned a year old this June; Ollie is a palliative-care foster with a brain tumour and is in the last few weeks of his life - to be honest I doubt he'd even notice a tiny scrap like Emily around the place... as it is I'm not at all sure that he'll live to meet her :'(

Heehee... well I'm a wheelchair user which has plusses and minuses when it comes to not squashing cats. Big plus is that I don't move by lifting something (a foot!) up and putting it down again... wheels are more likely to nudge them then instantly squash like a foot. The flipside is that I have learnt to be REALLY careful when moving around cos I have to keep an eye on 4 wheels and 3 sets of paws and a tail at all times.

Of course I've already been through that with kittens before - my 2 - and with Ollie who is pretty blundery these days and not at all clever about staying out of the way.

How much does she weigh now?

It looks like poor old Ollie (http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php?topic=6935.msg107866) is really going downhill this week... it's really helping me out to think that I've got another little soul coming to join me.

Assuming all goes well with Uncle Sean whenever she sees him...
Dawn, could you please ask Sean for some sort of diagnosis for her, I don't know whether it'd be sensible to ask him for a letter or something to take to my vets here to keep them clearly up-to-scratch on what Em has been through so far?

I've pretty much made my peace with things for Ollie - I've known all along that he only had a limited time and that the only objective was to give him a good quality of life for that time. If I can't be confident that he's happy and comfortable then that means it's time for him to move on to the big playground in the sky.

Dawn... if I say please really nicely, would you take me a picture or two? I've already saved all the ones from her babyhood, I'm building her up an album here (http://pics.livejournal.com/beccaviola/gallery/0001kp58).

Emily was checked over by Sean and she's absolutely fine, apart from me discovering just before she went, she was actually a little boy :shy: He didn't advise rehoming her with other cats just in case she is a shedder and if she is, obviously the stress of moving her etc would bring this out if she is a carrier. Smokie obviously passed on something to the whole litter whilst she was carrying but all her bloods were clear so we still don't know what caused it. To be on the safe side, she won't be for rehoming or he I should say.

He's still a little buggar and is into everything but he is at the moment happy and healthy, and I hope he continues to remain so :Luv:
